this solo is awesome, but it's almost like he's too white. he could more soul, like really throw himself in the beat. this is absolutely awesome though, no doubt.
@alisonaffliction he's not white he is GINGER are you suggesting he should blacken up or something, maybe to be a bit more "authentic". Ginger baker is who he is.
@birdybill and you're in no position to judge. Rich was good, totally different but good, plus there are/were way better drummers than Rich. /watch?v=DbRtiy0Wauo
Hey, after 40 years, he COULD probably do this in his sleep! Man! Never ceases to amaze me how great drummers (or any drummers worth listening to) can keep all 4 extremities and their heads moving in so many different rhythms! Fascinating to watch and listen to again and again, just to hear the parts you missed the first time! Long live Ginger!!!!
@ElectricMayhemFilms Granted, though this solo has come a long way. Ginger has learned so much over the past 40 years. This solo was a combination of his experiences in Africa with all of those crazy 6/8 tom patterns, improved jazz improvisation, and much improved chops and musicality. Imagine if Bonham had the chance to play Moby Dick now with an extra 30 years of experience.
they are playing in a different key...(check out original studio version) the key changes at the end. Ginger Baker was one of the best drummers of the 60's (read the liner notes to "Fresh Cream"), Bonham was one of the best drummers of the 70's, Buddy Rich was a JERK, & Ginger Baker slowed down here, in comparison to the original studio version, but he is still good. Without him there is no CREAM. Maybe Travis Barker is a good drummer for the 90's, didn't he get in a plane crash? Still Alive :)!
Watch and listen from around 8:44 to 9:00. The man is 70 yrs. old and check that out. You little shits who keep yammering about Travis Barker et al need to open your freaking eyes and ears. Drums are about rythyms not this boring shit I hear played all over the place these days, the majority of which absolutely sucks ass.
These rythyms Baker plays have always fascinated me. It's not fast but it's quite intricate and sounds great. That's always been his thing as a drummer, lots of single stroke rolls and more African rythym based drumming. As far as 'keeping tempo with the hi-hat' IMO that was more Bonzo's style than anyone else including Rich. Meaning Bonham would stop sticking the hi hat but then switch to pedal and keep it going without missing a note. He did that regularly and you wouldn't not realize it.
john bonham and ginger baker are mentioned in the same paragraphs in HAMMER OF THE GODS book. Bonham "Moby Dick" was modeled on Cream's "Toad", I forgot exact what word was used.
The word used was paradigm. Stephen Davies wrote that book, yep, you are correct, I remember it. Another good book is Stairway to Heaven by Richard Cole and Richart Turbio [or something].
I know I'm going to get flamed but here it is... my rant... My top three players are Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, and Dennis Chambers, and Buddy Rich isn't in my top 10 or even close. I usually dont get into Bonham, Moon, peart, Ringo any of those legends, but Ginger Baker is one of the most unique technically skilled and musical players I have ever heard.
Interesting list. I don't know the best is but I know who my faves are: Clive Burr. Ringo Starr. John Bonham. Stewart Copeland. Ginger Baker [check out his double CD Do What You Like]. Virgil Donati. Vinnie Colaiuta. Terry Bozzio. Dave Grohl. Micky Dee [Motorhead]. Etc...
I can see where most people, today, would think this drum solo is no big deal. You have got to remember that this solo was done in the 60s. It was the first rock drum solo that really had any structure. Before
Ginger came along I was a really big Keith Moon fan. I still am a Moon fan. I think that Keith and Ginger would be in my top 5 rock drummers of all time. I saw Keith in concert twice, and he was unbelievable. Keith, unlike Ginger, was one constant drum solo. Just an opinion.
I think this solo was very musical in a way. I love Baker because when is doing a solo, he isn't just showing how fast he is. He show's what kind of MUSIC you can do with just a drumkit. He is a very entertaining drummer. Great solo!
I assume your refering to Buddy Rich. Your kinda comparing Apples to Oranges are you. One jazz drummer to a rock drummer. Buddy Rich is the best all around drummer of all time inclulding John Bonham & Moby Dick solo
This is everything that makes rock drumming gr8, and I feel like I have grown up with Gingers drumming even though I was'nt born when it first came out. Real good music by a band who know how to play.
I like watching how his playing matured from the Cream days. This sounds more like his later solo albums with the African and jazz influences. It's not blazing fast, but very musical
For connoisseurs of drum solos: well worth checking out is Brian Bennett's "Little B", posted elsewhere on this site. Masterly stuff. The records he made with the Shadows give little idea of what he was truly capable of.
He is the man, he was the real inspiration to rock and roll or metal drummers or how ever you want to call it,..to moby dick( john bonham), IAn Paice, Keith Moon, Neil Peart, Daney Carey, alex VAn Halen,Tommy Aldridge, Gene Hoglan, MIke Portnoy and many more excellent drummers talk about him as a real inspiration for drum rock drum solos, HELL YEAH!! TO MR GINGER BAKER!!
"You have to be able to play all your beats evenly, slowly, first...speed will come with practice, but speed's not the most important thing. This is the thing I think aught to be got across to all these young drummers of today who loads of which I've heard...uh...several drum things I've been to. All of which are very fast, but they don't say anything. You can say an awful lot more with 1 beat in the right place than with 16 beats in the same place."
Well if you knew anything about real music then you wouldn't say stuff like that cause you would know that your talking total bollocks. Ginger baker is the man!
40 years ago, we all loved Ginger, but the word was he was on speed or smack, and nobody figured he'd ever see age 40. Guess he got the last laugh, and good for him. He's still the best rock drummer I've ever heard.

hey Scorpions84(and everybody else), go to the tavis barker video labeled "Theeeeee drum solo king". That will show you how I and everybody else feels about travis barker
Just about every drum video I visiting there is always at least one Travis Barker fanboy who thinks he's better than every classic rock drummer that ever lived.
Travis Barker is good, I will say, but he's not great. Probably never will be. Bonham, Moon, Peart, Baker, Bruford, Palmer and Collins are great and put Barker to shame.
Ginger Baker is god. Any of you wankers below, who think Bohnam is better can go suck my cock. The recorded Moby Dick was the biggest crock-of-shit I ever heard. I won't deny it's good live, but Ginger is just better.
Bonham's overwhelming fame comes form his early death, and that he belonged to one of the most famous band sin history. Period, the end. He was a great drummer, but not because he could do crazy things that no one else could do, but rather that he could do alot with a little. Bonham;s drum solos are the most excruciatingly boring pieces of "music" i have ever heard. i'll take Baker anyday.
haha are you kidding me? You honestly can't understand why he's cited left and and right as the greatest, if not 2nd greatest drummer (behind peart) of all time? Other than his death? Jesus if u don't know anything about music then don't bother talking about, Baker's style is increadibly generic, bonham is on another level.
yeah, he is cited left to right because he belonged to Led Zeppelin. Bonham is a highly overrated drummer, and it doesnt help that #1 he died early and #2 all the the remaining members of Zep ever talk about was how amazing he was. Obviousy the person with the most advertising is going to get the most support.
P.S. i do know alot about music, i am a musician. perhaps i just have a different opinion?
Hektor you call you say you know music, yet you have the stupidity to spout off that Bonham was the #1 member in the band. I'm not a huge fan of Zeppelin or anything, but when it comes to music my knowledge is prodigiously vast, and I'm aware that there was no real #1 member in Zeppelin. If you don't have the musical ear to see Bonham's tremendous prowess on the drums.
I don' even know why i'm arguing. you know when u get into a conversation where the other guy has his head up his ass and u don't feel the need to debate? That's how I am with you. This conversation is over.
now im a much bigger fan of zeppelin than cream, in fact i only own disraeli gears (great album) but on that album baker is anything but generic, he goes beyond the numerous drummers of that time by playing around the toms and cymbals, pretty much everything around the snare as opposed to a generic hat snare and bass 4/4 groove, and bonham, jesus mans a legend, but u shudn't compare people even worse when u compare urself
Hello Experte! I did as you told me and already collected the promised $888 Bonus on 888 com/Bonus . So far so good but what about further Bonuses? Do you know any more Codes? What if I tell my friends about the POTLORD Bonus Code that I did use at 888 com/Bonus ?
Hahahahaha, okay, it´s just every single men´s opinion - but Ginger influenced so, so many drummers and Bonham was among them who he influenced you can hear that a loooooooong way!

I am a drummer and must admit I found this solo pretty dull. I'm sure he's got good technique etc but it was not a particularly inspired or musically interesting solo - little development regardless of his ability. Check out the 7 year old drummer's solo. Now that's amazing.
waited 36 years to see this solo, was fortunate enough to get tickets to the msg shows in ny. He could barely stand after this. Well worth the wait and will never forget it. Have tics for clapton and winwood there in feb and hope like hell he is there. Blind Faith can`t wait

Ginger Baker is god. Any of you wankers below, who think Bohnam is better can go suck my cock. The recorded Moby Dick was the biggest crock-of-shit I ever heard. I won't deny it's good live, but Ginger is just better.

I never said Bonham was the #1 member of the band. re-read my comment.

why dont u go suck off a horse
drumfreak12345 4 years ago
Bonham's overwhelming fame comes form his early death, and that he belonged to one of the most famous band sin history. Period, the end. He was a great drummer, but not because he could do crazy things that no one else could do, but rather that he could do alot with a little. Bonham;s drum solos are the most excruciatingly boring pieces of "music" i have ever heard. i'll take Baker anyday.
Hektor88 4 years ago
haha are you kidding me? You honestly can't understand why he's cited left and and right as the greatest, if not 2nd greatest drummer (behind peart) of all time? Other than his death? Jesus if u don't know anything about music then don't bother talking about, Baker's style is increadibly generic, bonham is on another level.
zabrak999 4 years ago
yeah, he is cited left to right because he belonged to Led Zeppelin.
Hektor88 4 years ago
Hektor you call you say you know music, yet you have the stupidity to spout off that Bonham was the #1 member in the band. I'm not a huge fan of Zeppelin or anything, but when it comes to music my knowledge is prodigiously vast, and I'm aware that there was no real #1 member in Zeppelin. If you don't have the musical ear to see Bonham's tremendous prowess on the drums.

I don' even know why i'm arguing. you know when u get into a conversation where the other guy has his head up his ass and u don't feel the need to debate? That's how I am with you. This conversation is over.

your modest too.

now im a much bigger fan of zeppelin than cream, in fact i only own disraeli gears (great album) but on that album baker is anything but generic, he goes beyond the numerous drummers of that time by playing around the toms and cymbals, pretty much everything around the snare as opposed to a generic hat snare and bass 4/4 groove, and bonham, jesus mans a legend, but u shudn't compare people even worse when u compare urself

wow this is horrible

baker is nowhere near bonham...do not even put them in the same league. dont get me wrong baker is gr8 but bonham just was outta this world
roylett 4 years ago
Hahahahaha, okay, it´s just every single men´s opinion - but Ginger influenced so, so many drummers and Bonham was among them who he influenced you can hear that a loooooooong way!
I think Ginger was "otta the world" too!
Simmzon 4 years ago
no he wasn't... bonzo was influenced by motown players and jazz players. baker is a contemporary of bonham's.
irondaddymac 4 years ago
Baker was actually before Bonham. Bonham came into his own with Zep in the 70's, Baker came into his own in the mid 60's with Graham Bond.
Hektor88 4 years ago 2
yeh bonham was influenced by baker and i will admit that. and bonham came into his own in the 60s not 70s

I am a drummer and must admit I found this solo pretty dull. I'm sure he's got good technique etc but it was not a particularly inspired or musically interesting solo - little development regardless of his ability. Check out the 7 year old drummer's solo. Now that's amazing.
