Piracy has more reasons than just "bad service" of the game industry. One would be the overpricing of the original. Another would be lack of Trial versions. People may want to test a product before they buy it, and if there is no Demo, you have to go to the pirates.
Best reason for for using pirated versions is indeed the bothersome copyright protection. Just think of the SecuRom with limited game installations, or DRM which isn't compatible with every player, or singleplayergame online urge.

I normally torrent a game to see if it is good and runs well on my PC. If I like it then I buy the game over Steam. However if the game has all this DRM or was badly ported, then I just don't bother with the game. I only buy my games off of Steam now though so I have them all in one place. So if they aren't on Steam then I don't bother buying them because I know Steam will give me a great service.
Just hope Ubi releases games on Steam in the UK or I wont be buying their games again.

I really hate those DRMs! I got farcry 2 BUT the DRM was so fucked up that i had to get a crack to even play it. Not only that, but i also had to wait a week to get it delivered to me.
If i just pirated that game i would get it in only 6 hours and have the same amount of problems installing.
i will always buy Valve products on day 1. They never screw their customers around with DRM or any crap like that and they have me as a loyal customer. Ubi take notice.

One point I'd like to add in the "good service" category, that when you have 2000$ PC(There is no such PC, 500$ is well enough for high-end rig) and you are given copypaste ported 2006 console game with 10m draw distance, you are not going to be very happy.
I'm actually very irritated when my 1,5 year old PC runs a brand new game all maxed 1920x1080 8xAA no problem.
Wont buy any DRM games either. I got a powerful rig and powerful network and i could buy any game at any given time, but i wont buy DRM protected games. I upgrade my PC often wich is my hobby. Gaming is also (as you guessed) my hobby and they dont go hand in hand as you cant upgrade without losing installs. Crap.

Like he said: If you understand your customers, look at things from their perspective, and offer them a premium services with good quality they will pay. gabe is what the industry needed. not bad ceo's like kotick. gabe is awesome. just about every valve game was a great experience to me. steam is great. steam sales etc. i doubt the game industry would be alive if valve never started

What I hate about steam is that they won´t unban accounts, I got my account hijacked but got it back. But if that douche who hijacked my account would get my account banned, Valve can´t do anything about it.

Gabe Newell talk about community and sharing the views of the costumers, at to much degree living up to it, while Bob Kotick talks about increasing game prices, decreasing budgets, adding monthly fees, selling cutscenes stand-alone, and overall being a ridicilous Jew.
Too bad the other big names in the industry rather follow Kotick than Newell, as it's easier to be dumbshit retarded than actually pretending to try once in a while.

Gabe is completely right. Hackers sometimes offer better service than companies. Like Fear. That game bit the consumer up the ass. I bought it and had a thousand problems with it. Support didn't help. You know what did help? A crack and an unofficial patch.
I buy things from steam, I buy products that I really like. I pirate that hell out of shitty companies that want 60$ for a broken product.

wow that financing idea sounds actually really great, sort of a pre-pre-order to a game. thats actually pretty much like what is happening with natural selection 2, now that i think about it. provides for a much more direct relation between dev and customer. also creates a wider market of devs... that would be cool

I normally torrent a game to see if it is good and runs well on my PC. If I like it then I buy the game over Steam. However if the game has all this DRM or was badly ported, then I just don't bother with the game. I only buy my games off of Steam now though so I have them all in one place. So if they aren't on Steam then I don't bother buying them because I know Steam will give me a great service.
Just hope Ubi releases games on Steam in the UK or I wont be buying their games again.

I really hate those DRMs! I got farcry 2 BUT the DRM was so fucked up that i had to get a crack to even play it. Not only that, but i also had to wait a week to get it delivered to me.
If i just pirated that game i would get it in only 6 hours and have the same amount of problems installing.

i will always buy Valve products on day 1. They never screw their customers around with DRM or any crap like that and they have me as a loyal customer. Ubi take notice.

Whoa, first time I heard someone in the game industry talking about gamer's perspective! And in PC gamer perspective!
One point I'd like to add in the "good service" category, that when you have 2000$ PC(There is no such PC, 500$ is well enough for high-end rig) and you are given copypaste ported 2006 console game with 10m draw distance, you are not going to be very happy.
I'm actually very irritated when my 1,5 year old PC runs a brand new game all maxed 1920x1080 8xAA no problem.

Wont buy any DRM games either. I got a powerful rig and powerful network and i could buy any game at any given time, but i wont buy DRM protected games. I upgrade my PC often wich is my hobby. Gaming is also (as you guessed) my hobby and they dont go hand in hand as you cant upgrade without losing installs. Crap.

Goddamn, this man understands this industry front and back. Like he said: If you understand your customers, look at things from their perspective, and offer them a premium services with good quality they will pay. It's no wonder Steam has become the powerhouse it is. On the flip-side you have guys like Bobby Kotick that are running things like your average big corporation. Sure, it profits in the short term but what about 5 or 10 years from now?
