  • Gabe Newell is the man.

  • alot of people say gabe to fat to make half life2 ep3, hes not making it because the voice of dr.breen have died

  • Ubisoft can learn from Gabe Newell. If Ubisoft keeps ramming DRM stuff in their games, the company will probably go bankrupt eventually because everyone will simply download their games illegally due to the high amount of DRM crap in the games. (Take Assassins Creed for example - requires online connection at all times to play?!!)

  • RUSSIA !

  • Wow theres alot of hate for a guy who owes everyone sweet FA, this guy makes products for people with machines that cost thousands. Stop living with your parents and get some perspective. You don't stay in a five star hotel and complain it isn't free cause your house is really nice... dicks

  • people make fun of gaben a lot but he actually seems like a pretty cool dude. he looked around and saw what was up and did some shit.

  • If Bobby Kotick is the devil, then Gabe Newell is jesus christ.

  • ironic as Half-Life 2 is the only game I've got rid of because I had already installed it on another system so I couldn't play it

  • he's basically trying to make a stock market for financing game deelopment. SMART! this is like early 20th century america when the stock market was born and whatever

  • why didnt you ask him about Half-life 2 episode 3? Nutstomper.

  • @youbitubi16 that was about 2-3 years ago.

  • Hm...i do hate him for no info about HL, but his steam platform is one of the best things ever happened on the net, free games, demos before you actually want to buy the game.

  • Community based funding? Fucking brilliant. I can't wait to see if this is ever implemented.

  • @ChaostheClown I know dude, that's super cool.

  • Smart bloke, awesome idea on the financing of the community members...

  • So your incharge around here is that fair to say?

  • This guy is a Gaming Genius... His take on piracy is the BEST I HAVE EVER HEARD!!

  • @atluser321 Yeah, man. He's like the God of gaming in my eyes. Him n all of Valve are the most dedicated team out there. Nobody cares like they do, nobody approaches things like they do. Nobody has the success that they do because of it, either.

  • Thanks, Gabe, for bring me more entertainment than anyone else possibly could.

  • 3:30 so true!!!

  • one question tough. what does gabe do for the valve games? program or something?

  • fun fact:

Spore is one of the game that has been pirated most of all time and its the only game where you need to buy a new code every time you have used the old one 5 times Gabe solved that problem by putting spore on steam so that you did not need a code to play the game at all

  • He may be a little chubby...

But he is A GOD Among Gamers!

  • MOAR STEAM SALES :D

  • Very insightful. No wonder this guy made millions.

  • I didnt knew his favorite game of all time is doom.

  • it pisses me off when people call gabe newell fat he is a gamer who actually cares about us as gamers and he gives us steam and steam sales and other cool shit people need to stop calling him fat... and turn to kotick and talk shit about that prick

  • @ohboyhey2k4 he only cares about the money

  • @dikkenerd100 no he doesn't he is an actual gamer if he only cared about money he would throw the HL2EP3 protest out but he game them pizza, soda and let them play test Dota 2 now bobby kotick he only cares about money gabe newell fucking plays TF2 and shit

  • @ohboyhey2k4 It's based on TF2 hats , but I thought it was Gabe's idea

  • Well said Gabe :) Steam is awesome!

  • GAEBAN

  • RUSSIANS ARE PIRATES! I NOW KNOW THE SECRETS OF LIFE!

  • I love Gaben

  • I wish this dudes team could develop the elderscrolls........

  • heres the god damn proof why the delay or why it takes so long damn time to realese half life ep 3 or another game just check /watch?v=JRV62bebOrQ&feature=related

  • this video made me think of the hacks we heard lately in the news. BioWare has been attacked by hackers and of course the PS3 hack was a big shock for everyone. I hope valve won't be the next target of hackers.

  • @MartinGro131 They actually where. During the development of Half life 2. Some fag in Germany stole and leaked all of their stuff.

  • @EpiDemic117 I actually thought more abouth a hack of steam due to it's popularity. Just recently I bought a bunch of games because steam offered a discount for all games available. Before that I only had L4D1, LD42 and the Half Life Games on my steam account. Now I've got a bunch of other games, all attached to one single account. So a hack of valves distribution platform steam would be far worse for me than the Half Life 2 hack back in 2003.

  • @MartinGro131 don't worry! you have STEAMGUARD! it's like a giant shield wall that prevents that. And valve thought exactly what you thought about security.

  • He's an expert on how to counter piracy. Awesome guy.

And I got proof. I have never pirated a valve game. And I don't know anyone who has.

  • @SnoweyMan111 its not so easy but still possible!

  • @Pennymarkt32 Watch the video. The thing is that it lacks service if you pirate it. Pirated valve games are pretty bad. Unpirated they're amazing.

  • You're awesome Gabe.

We only make fun of you because we love you.

  • Gabe's right about piracy. Example: iTunes. You get a new album you have to worry about backing that shit up. If your computer breaks, or you get a new computer and you forgot to back up the music or the drive that you stored music in is broken....your fucked. I resorted to going on LimeWires to "get my money back"

  • I pirate games on PC when a demo isn't available, mainly to see if it runs well on my cp. If I like it, I NEVER keep the pirated version, I always pay for it.

On consoles, I can usually borrow it from one of the dozens of people I know who play console games, so there's no need to pirate them.

Gabe Newell knows his shit. It is natural for people to want to thank others when they give them enjoyment. They hug their mother when she bakes them cookies, and they pay for games when they're fun.

  • Gaben has 100 problems and Piracy isn't one of them.

  • 6 people are jealous of Gabe.

  • "Piracy is the result of bad service" marry me gabe i wanna make children with you

  • @sexygrandpamidget he already is married and has kids that woman he married is one lucky gal

  • Bought every game Valve has made, can I has hugs? Or just more left 4 dead content, either way... :P

  • I admit I've pirated games before, probably mostly when I was a young teenager since I never had the money back then, after that any game I ever pirated was only due to the pirated version being a better product due to draconian drm.

As for Valve, I have blind faith in the quality of any games they produce without needing a demo, I've never pirated any of their games and have bought practically everything they've ever made.

  • Gabe Nuwell to games is like Josh Harris to the internet

  • Gabe is a bro, nuff said.

  • Gabe newell is gabe newell, your argument is invalid.

  • He's so fat, he fell in love and broke it.

  • Newell does capitalism right, great service and great products are what keep consumers coming back for more.

  • Arrrgh.....Im a russian pirate.

  • gaben =)

  • "If people are buying $2000 PC's....clearly they are willing to spend money"

That should be the most important point you people should take from Gabe Newell's mouth.

  • Who cares if he's overweight? He's a genius who actually knows what he's talking about, and he doesn't need to be in shape to do that.

I totally agree with his analysis of piracy. I've pirated a couple games, but only to test them out. If I liked it, I bought it. If I didn't like it, then I deleted the game. I don't want to shell out $40 on a full video game just to find out it sucks.

And yes, the availability and low cost if Steam games do encourage me to buy more games. VALVe was really smar

  • @TheStanishStudios yeah same here :D

  • @TheStanishStudios If it wasn't for steam, I probably wouldn't own so many games. Actually, I know I wouldn't.

  • @TheStanishStudios Yeah he's a genius that corner's you to have to use the internet to run your game you purchased, also another great idea is how when I go to cache my data for my account to run them in offline, it says I need internet to run steam in offline mode that was one of the smartest. Also another was how the games update without your permission and when they sell their games on steam they have slow support and everything, yeah I can see this company going in 5 years

  • Also it's just funny how the pirated games seem to run better than the purchased ones, Also too, I can run them offline it's also funny how the pirates seem to help you run the games better than steam's multi-thousand employee business does.

  • You know I don't hate steam because I have to buy my games I hate steam because when I buy my games they don't seem to work at all half the time, and it forces me to have internet, and when I try to run it in offline mode it tells me I don't have my data cached on my PC, then when I do that when I have internet it gives me an unknown error and then fails to cache my account info to run it in offline mode, yeah such a great masterpiece steam is.

  • Also it strange how everyone says steam couldn't be hacked and a month later I get an automated public message how I have to change my password due to accounts being compromised. On top of all of that when I got to retrieve my password it says my email is incorrect and asks me a math question that the website can't even recognize is the correct answer. Oh I know why! It's because the website is ran by bots!

  • @LambaH4Z4RD You sound like you're full of shit. Pls go.

  • not even live, you can hear when they cut to gabe

  • Community funded games development - that's pretty much what Minecraft did (still does)

  • Gabe would shed a single tear reading the flamewar about piracy that's going on below.

  • fail

  • 4:34 " Russians are pirates! "

  • From my own experience piracy is more of getting something wich has "some" intrest for free and quick. Lets say Call of Duty Black ops, not that popular as Mordern Warfare 2 but intresting enough to play, what do you do, you download it.

  • @nils4545 I often pirate games and if I like them, buy it. I have over 300 games on my steam account, and I've torrented them before buying.

  • @TheBadunka no that is just sad dude over 300 games wow that is sad please go outside i bit more ok

  • @crysis109 Implying I played each and every one? Look's like some one is a bit too aggressive on people who can afford things.

  • @TheBadunka lmfao no i cna affored it's just my choice tonot waste a couple hundred dollar's on games lmfao go get liad : D

  • @crysis109 Yeah your mom has got that covered for me.

  • @crysis109

So your a cheap man slut that can't pay for other folks hard work, go get laid ist he obvious solution to anything isnt it? Your a retard to say the least.

  • @zauii89 lol you troll :D people like you make me laugh lol ha :D telling me to go get laid over the net lol you dont even know me lol troll:D :)

  • @Boarbeque and that, in turn, will generate a HUGE and VERY loyal fan base, and ALOT of money

  • @Boarbeque True! And do you all know that Valve is making DOTA 2?

  • @Migman99 lol XD

  • His comments at the end about community financing seem extremely spot on when you consider Minecraft.

  • @Migman99 That's what you get for buying that piece of shit game...

  • @Migman99 lol that means you hacked steam, Fuck you :)

  • Piracy has more reasons than just "bad service" of the game industry. One would be the overpricing of the original. Another would be lack of Trial versions. People may want to test a product before they buy it, and if there is no Demo, you have to go to the pirates.

Best reason for for using pirated versions is indeed the bothersome copyright protection. Just think of the SecuRom with limited game installations, or DRM which isn't compatible with every player, or singleplayergame online urge.

  • IN SOVIET RUSSIA, GAMES PIRATE YOU!

  • Gabe knows what piracy is and what does cause it!

  • LOL PIRATES IN RUSSIA

  • Gabe Newell, John Carmack

...they have irrevocably engraved their legacy as LEGENDS of the gaming and genius programming communities!

Two open source, people first, altruism forever guys.

Game gurus Of the gamers, By the gamers, For the gamers, whose industry-revolutionizing-awesomeness shall never perish from this Earth!

    =3

  • @TAz69x Carmack is a sellout, fuck him

  • this guys a genius; ESPECIALLY with the tf2 store. I know people that have spent over 600$ bucks on freaking hats and guns and stupid shit but if it makes money, hey why not.

  • the complete opposite of bobby kotick

  • OMFG he is a legend this guy fucking rocks.

  • Was the boomber based on Gabe?

  • one hundred bucks if Gabe stayed at microsoft and didnt go on to create games.

    PC gaming would be dead.

  • Other game devs could learn a lot from this man.

  • Gabe really knows his shit. PC gaming industry will be alive because of this man.

  • genius

  • WoW his idea on community based funding is sooooo good, id be full interested in it ey!

  • I think Gabe is cooler than God. He needs a church.

  • @nyymphetamiine i second that!

  • @nyymphetamiine well, you think wrong.

  • @usblg4gb u jelly of gabes godliness.

  • @nyymphetamiine He already has the best Church in the world. Doug Church.

  • @nyymphetamiine no he needs to get his ass going on half life again

  • @marcusamarrious

he's focusing on making other epic games...

    thx for trying tho.

  • @nyymphetamiine *10 months later* "Welcome to the Church of Valve. After 10 months of development, hopefully it will have been worth the wait."

  • @EmperorHeresy "10 months later"... "10 months of development"..

You mean 10 months Valve time, right?

  • @TheReggaeMortis Spy: Naturally.

  • @nyymphetamiine no Gabe needs Churches Chicken.

  • @nyymphetamiine Michael Moore beat him to it

  • @nyymphetamiine Valve recently acquired Doug Church.

  • gabe... why so epic? WHY!

id give my left toe to talk with this guy for a day!

  • gabe is what the industry needed. not bad ceo's like kotick. gabe is awesome. just about every valve game was a great experience to me. steam is great. steam sales etc. i doubt the game industry would be alive if valve never started

  • FUCK YEAR GABE!!!

  • @cmucky episode 3 has been delayed

  • GABE FOR PRESIDENT!

  • With Steam and it's price for games is the sole reason I don't pirate PC games. I come to a point where the first thing come to mind when I hear about a PC game release is "is it on Steam?!"

  • @CagedTurkey just w8 a month and it goes on sale lol! like killing floor was 4$! last week!

  • I wish Gabe would explain his piracy views to Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. I don't particularly enjoy being able to hook up my iPod to my Xbox 360 without being able to play music that I bought from iTunes.

  • Gabe looks so sad :C

  • Dear EA games: Please stop trying to control every aspect of games and die.

  • Community based funding is actually quite a good idea.

  • What I hate about steam is that they won´t unban accounts, I got my account hijacked but got it back. But if that douche who hijacked my account would get my account banned, Valve can´t do anything about it.

  • @Nefus1988 retard

  • i am a mac user so i HAD to get a cidered perate version(this is before steam on mac)

  • This must be the smartest thing I have ever heard on the internet.

  • @ccx555

    +1.

Gabe Newell talk about community and sharing the views of the costumers, at to much degree living up to it, while Bob Kotick talks about increasing game prices, decreasing budgets, adding monthly fees, selling cutscenes stand-alone, and overall being a ridicilous Jew.

Too bad the other big names in the industry rather follow Kotick than Newell, as it's easier to be dumbshit retarded than actually pretending to try once in a while.

  • @BorkaBonum Kotick is an ass who wants to make money off of gaming, where clearly he has never played a game in his life.

  • Gabe is completely right. Hackers sometimes offer better service than companies. Like Fear. That game bit the consumer up the ass. I bought it and had a thousand problems with it. Support didn't help. You know what did help? A crack and an unofficial patch.

I buy things from steam, I buy products that I really like. I pirate that hell out of shitty companies that want 60$ for a broken product.

  • gabe knows exactly what hes doing xD everything he says here sounds right to me and i love steam and all of valves games, especially for modding and mapping, source is just brilliant! i bit limited tho ^^

  • this guy knows his shit.

i love Steam and fully support it.

PC gaming was and will continue to be the best.

  • I will never torrent Valve games, because they are always good and provide a great SERVICE OF ENTERTAINMENT for decades from their release. I love it !!!

  • Iam glad to be part of this Steam awesomesauce !!!

  • What I like about valve is that most of their games and new updates for their games are based on the fans thoughts on it.

  • GABEN IS GOD!

  • This man speaks the truth, he is very wise.

    I love Half-life and Steam rocks, that's just fact.:D

  • Things like ea suck, they are always chaning the UI wich usually changes your password which confuses alot of people and just screws everything up, that us why steam is great, its so simple and just the best

  • Gabe Newell= The messiah

    Bobby Kotick= Bulletsponge

  • wow that financing idea sounds actually really great, sort of a pre-pre-order to a game. thats actually pretty much like what is happening with natural selection 2, now that i think about it. provides for a much more direct relation between dev and customer. also creates a wider market of devs... that would be cool

    ubisoft sucking is a given

  • This is why im not buying RUSE. Ubisoft and stupid DRM. Gabe is dead on. FF to 3:30 and listen Ubisoft

  • 4:41 what game is that?

  • @mustardman32

    Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl

  • i love how passionate he talks about games, just ask one question and he could go on for ages haha its greate so wise ahaha

  • gabes awsome !!

  • one question. Hl2:3 at e3??? :o

  • @masterofjelly VALVe said there wont be a HL2E3 this year or next but focusing on HL3. So we have to wait, but man I sure hope its worth it.

  • Gabe and his boys must have had no idea what they were getting into when they first made Half-Life.

"Best PC game of all time"

    "96 out of 100"

    "Best shooter of all time"

And then, with Half-Life 2, they got the big one. "Best game of ALL TIME"

No critic has ever given that to another game.

  • God damnit Gabe, I love you.

  • I normally torrent a game to see if it is good and runs well on my PC. If I like it then I buy the game over Steam. However if the game has all this DRM or was badly ported, then I just don't bother with the game. I only buy my games off of Steam now though so I have them all in one place. So if they aren't on Steam then I don't bother buying them because I know Steam will give me a great service.

Just hope Ubi releases games on Steam in the UK or I wont be buying their games again.

  • I think this interview could be used as very valuable advice for anyone in the game design industry. Gabe Really knows what he's talking about and I support what he says and the products he helps produce every step of the way.

  • all pc games should be avaliable on steam, that way they wont get pirated by me

  • I really hate those DRMs! I got farcry 2 BUT the DRM was so fucked up that i had to get a crack to even play it. Not only that, but i also had to wait a week to get it delivered to me.

If i just pirated that game i would get it in only 6 hours and have the same amount of problems installing.

  • Comment removed

  • i was very supicious of Steam at first. I use steam since the new AVP and i am positively surprise

  • this old vid was ressurected by a no life loser called PoisonTaco saying PC gaming is dying ...LMFAO

  • Gabe is big, in many ways...:) Awesome guy.

  • @libbern

Heh indeed :) hes just awsome! great guy.

  • i will always buy Valve products on day 1. They never screw their customers around with DRM or any crap like that and they have me as a loyal customer. Ubi take notice.

  • Whoa, first time I heard someone in the game industry talking about gamer's perspective! And in PC gamer perspective!

One point I'd like to add in the "good service" category, that when you have 2000$ PC(There is no such PC, 500$ is well enough for high-end rig) and you are given copypaste ported 2006 console game with 10m draw distance, you are not going to be very happy.

I'm actually very irritated when my 1,5 year old PC runs a brand new game all maxed 1920x1080 8xAA no problem.

  • @TuPP3 I spent damn near that much. We're called enthusiasts, although yes $500 is more than enough.

  • Holy shit. This man is so big because he always has such big, awesome ideas.

  • Gabe Newell is one the most influential people for me.

  • Man, I like this guy more now.

  • Brings a proud tear to my eye.

  • Wise words!

  • Wont buy any DRM games either. I got a powerful rig and powerful network and i could buy any game at any given time, but i wont buy DRM protected games. I upgrade my PC often wich is my hobby. Gaming is also (as you guessed) my hobby and they dont go hand in hand as you cant upgrade without losing installs. Crap.

  • dude he's got to get ona diet I really don't want him diyng of a heart attack 'cause then the video game industry will trully go to hell

  • Goddamn, this man understands this industry front and back. Like he said: If you understand your customers, look at things from their perspective, and offer them a premium services with good quality they will pay. It's no wonder Steam has become the powerhouse it is. On the flip-side you have guys like Bobby Kotick that are running things like your average big corporation. Sure, it profits in the short term but what about 5 or 10 years from now?
