  • this is obviously pre recorded

  • The best musicians of the century put together. The dream team! So beautiful

  • oooooooooooooo....i've got goosebumps on goosebumps! B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L.!!!

  • didnt y-yo ma have soap on his strings?

  • how did the world not explode in flames with so much awesomeness put together?

  • Simply beautiful <333

  • Beatiful !

    A lot of thanks

  • the violin is the Soil Strad.. which is widely known to be one of the finest violins ever made. Both string instruments are Strad's

  • the violin is the Soil Strad.. which is widely known to be one of the finest violins ever made.

  • i was in 6th grade when this happened...you have like now clue how happy i was to see this! i litterally screamed out OMGSH ITS PERLMAN AND YO-YO MA!:D:D:D:D EEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKK!(: hahhaha:D:D:D:D

  • Why at Obama's inauguration...

  • @l2pks4f3rs why not?

  • @pplayer666 Because Obama is a horrible president.

  • @l2pks4f3rs never know who's going to turn out what.

  • @pplayer666 Apparently you are blind.

  • @l2pks4f3rs me? - no, I couldn't care less of how good of a president he was/is/will be. all those who voted for him on the other hand are very likely so. but then again, if things were to turn out for the better, you'd be sitting with your tongue up your arse now wouldn't you.

  • @pplayer666 To be honest, there's very little chance of that happening. We'll see though.

  • I would like to know the composer, Thank.

  • @Eldelafuente John Williams. the song is called "Air and Simple Gifts"

  • I want to learn this song now

  • Amazing score! with grats musicians!

  • most epic performance of simple gifts.

    EVER.

  • en wikipedia org wiki Lip-syncing#Miming

  • im really sad to see perlman so old now god bless him

  • 'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,

'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,

And when we find ourselves in the place just right,

'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

    When true simplicity is gain'd,

To bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd,

To turn, turn will be our delight,

Till by turning, turning we come round right.

  • @charleshoskinson haha noo cuz according to this video he doesn't have enough talent for recognition.

  • This is some boring shit.

  • my lucky ass orchestra teacher got two tickets to see itzhak perform at Lila Cockrell Theatre i would try and get a couple seeing as i already live in san antone but i know they probably cost more than i could afford

  • Interesting rainbow of quartet. A Latino, An Asian, A Caucasian, and an African-American.

  • This is some boring shit. Times have changed and people know they should be engrossed with this stuff, but the classical times are over.

  • @ButtomFACE As long as people keep liking and producing classical music, the age of classical music will never be over. Times have changed, that's fine and dandy, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate both the classic and the modern.

What would you rather them play at an inauguration?

  • @ButtomFACE i guess only intelligent people can appreciate classical music

  • @ButtomFACE why? becauae we don't like the crap put ou tnow-a-days? Because this kind of music isn't computer modified? ? Gah...go listen to your justin bieber.. it's something you'll NEVER be able to understand.

  • @ButtomFACE If you can't hear this song's beauty I feel for you. I'm a Jay-Z fan, I drink, I party, but I'm not deaf to the music that has formed the world,

  • Lol, I would have rather voted Yo Yo ma or Itzhak Perlam for president instead of Obama....great performance

  • I wonder how long they had to tune to play in the cold weather magnificent job for all the musicians

  • @loljudge2000 This was pre recorded, sorry.

  • @loljudge2000 Actually this was recorded before and they just played to the recording. Bringing their million dollar instruments into this weather would ruin them. The instruments used in this are relatively worthless.

  • @Rpkist77 I wondered....because I was there and it was soooo cold..the sun shining is misleadimg....but it was stll a GLOrious day...the feeling in the air was electric.

  • he looks so old....

  • Woh, what a long time haven't seen this two musician playing together! The last time I guess was 15 years ago in Russia?

  • they all played their good instruments.

they just weren't miked because it's ridiculously difficult to get a good tone in weather that cold

  • I wish I were there to witness the glory =(

  • These are clearly the two great masters of our time. This is just proof of that. They can create such perfect sound in these conditions...

  • who's on the piano and clarinet? :D

  • @naonis Piano: Gabriela Montero; clarinet: Anthony McGill

  • @imcmaster Thank you for providing their names! Gabriela Montero & Anthony McGill are to be honored as well. :)

  • At 0:47-0:51 Obama's like ''What kind of music is this?!?!?!?'' to joe biden

  • @firebot4 Nah. I'm from Delaware: It would likely be Joe asking Barack that question, not the other way 'round. ;)

  • This is fake perfomance ! As you know.....

  • I might run for president just to have Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma play for me.

  • @youvegotsyd and random black man number 2

  • SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!

  • The musicians in this video are more than honoring a new US president. They are also telling a story of human tragedies as a result of slavery lasting for centuries, punctuated at moments like this with triumphs over inhumane ideologies and practices wherever and whenever they have existed. I can't understand how someone could disrespect this historical moment, by producing a fake copy that virtually destroys the original sound of this beautiful music. See 'Yo-Yo Shreds....'

  • @PowerofTrueInsight because humor is one of the two pinnacles of human achievement, aside music. Put the two together, and you get magic.

  • AIRBOW WIN IN.......the whole vid T.T

  • Here's the more important question: Why weren't the names of the clarinetist and pianist not mentioned anywhere in the title or description? That's a glaringly shitty omission. And just plain rude.

  • @jessilovesjason La pianista es Gabriela Montero y el clarinetista Anthony McGill.

  • @chcouto thank you for the info!

  • @jessilovesjason In case you & others wanted to know, Gabriela Montero (piano) and Anthony McGill (clarinet) are the musicians missing on the title.

  • @jessilovesjason You forgot the composer, John Williams.

  • @jessilovesjason Don't take seriously. I think the person who posted this video may be someone who likes strings instruments.

  • @jessilovesjason Because of the kind of musical instruments they are playing. Stringed instruments, especially the violin, had always been the center of attention in any performances becasue it can mesmerize the audience. The next in line is the piano, followed by the rest.

  • @jessilovesjason becasue hes a nigger...fuck america

  • @jessilovesjason the same reason all the names aren't listed for a symphony. Only the conductor/and any soloist who joined. Thanks for trying to stir up racism like it is the 60's all over again.(if that wasn't your goal then my mistake)

  • lol you could tell that it was fake right away cuz yo yo wasn't making any crazy faces

  • 1:02 - 1:07 ..Terminator

  • an den ereignis habe ich am fernsehen teilgenommen

  • Anyone

Can you tell me what music are they played?

  • If this is pre-recorded are their instruments fake?

  • Wow... Just Wow... I would love to play with both Yo-Yo Ma AND Itzhak Perlman one day :D They seem to be awesome to play with :)

  • it was... pre recorded by the way. but good choice.

  • one of the few good things that came after this day

  • Perlman had changed a pair of glasses as Yoyo had!

    Sections of vibration,fine!

Begin and End with sorrow melody!

    Middle is the theme!

  • Having these two together...breathtaking...........who could ask for more..

  • FAKE,hahaha

  • @FiddlerAdam Other than the fact that it's Perlman's, Soil isn't worth as much as people think. He fell on it once, a talented restorer was able to put it back together, but it's never the same after something like that.

Once that I know of, Yo Yo actually misplaced his cello, it may not have been the strad he plays now, this was when he was at Julliard. If you look closely at this video, they're not even playing their Stradivari originals. They're pretending to play nice instruments, not best

  • Hey, isn't this the music from "Lord of the dance"?? :)

(no, really, it's really similar at some point)

  • @onearmfrog You're hearing Simple Gifts, which does sound very similar to Lord of the Dance.

  • Both of them are above all the rest, somewhere in the air...l mean those two great musicians...

  • Everyone speculates that this performance was pre-recorded and the players simply mimed their parts. To hear what the instruments actually sounded like under these adverse conditions, search "Yo Yo Ma Shreds" . That'll teach 'em to play in the cold!

  • i think John Williams wrote or should i say, arranged this piece. Very nice.

  • A remarkable performance!

  • Why wasn't Anthony McGill mentioned in the title of this video? :(

  • @emquandra the same reason that Gabriela Montero was also omitted - I'm guessing just because Yo Yo Ma and Perlman are more well known. All four musicians did a phenomenal job

  • They must be freakin' cold....

  • Music of the angels, plain and simple.

  • Maravilloso, fantastico.

  • shit... this is such beautiful music

  • I dream.... thanks

  • my soul flew away for a while there

  • forgive my ignorance, but could someone explain to me how they played with the recording? so was there a recording that was played and they just played along with it??? is that how it went? or did they do something else... =P

  • @aznangelofbreak It's like lip-syncing, but with instruments. They (somehow) remove the rosin (tree sap type stuff that goes on the bowhair and makes the strings sound) and soap the strings so that they make almost no sound. And then they just play like they did during the recording.

  • The arrangement seems to be based off of "Simple Gifts", an old Shaker melody, used by Copland in Appalachian Spring.

  • @nixrox13 it is.

  • @nixrox13 THis song is called "Air and Simple Gifts" a composition written by John Phillips

  • @DrumMajorKolby actually its John Williams.

  • wait what is he playing

  • @tennisbeasta1234 air and simple gifts

  • It was really cold that day. But it was beautiful to hear, even if it was recorded beforehand.

I play the violin and I know from the shows that I've done that the cold is HELL on your instrument!

  • haha, yo yo ma's a bad faker :D

  • amazing thats allyhat has to be said

  • They should've played some fucking BACH!!!!

  • Simple Gifts is such a pleasant piece :)

  • For those who are wondering, yes, it was recorded. That was done not because the instruments would be damaged, but because it would be impossible to keep them in tune for more than a couple of minutes in the cold. They recorded the music ahead of time just in case the weather did not cooperate, and made a decision to go with the recorded version when there was no other option.

  • i hear something similar to bartok rhapsody no.1's theme

  • at 21 seconds, IS THAT KENNY?! HE'S ALIVE!!!

  • @omegazero16 lol

  • OMG. SO AWSOME

  • @DoninWhiting With all due respect, DoninWhiting, nothing in your post makes sense. Whose kind of music, white people? Rap and "Hip" aren't instruments. Reagan and republicans have cut funding for arts programs (I should know, I am a music teacher). And, the clarinet makes perfect sense in the composition, as Williams is purposely evoking Copland's setting of the Shaker melody. A found it to be a meaningful populist appropriation of an elitist art form (as practiced).

  • @DoninWhiting You're a pretentious prick. You assume people's taste through stereotypes. Even though you maybe could be right about the concert just being a formality, you say "our music", are you just talking about classical music, or just being old fashioned for the sake of being stuck up?

  • Such a barbaric response does not deserve the time of day. I speak from experience.and background..so cease the trash talk. Maybe you need a ....forget it, just forget about it. This has been inserted far more than 2 weeks ago

  • It would not be impossible to play outside in that weather, but their real instruments could have been harmed (I assume they are using cheaper instruments). Also, such extreme cold would have made their instruments out of tune. And even if they have the best mics in the world, on such a windy day, wouldn't the mics pick up the wind and the music would sound muffled.

  • very true. which is why they pre recorded the performance the day before. If a string broke or the weather caused their instruments to go out of tune, all they had to do was turn the volume up on the recording.

  • it was in fact recorded, as confirmed by the musicians, and very little attempt was made to hide that fact. it has little to do with them 'faking it', and a great deal to do with the potential damage to instruments. i believe the wind chill on the green was around -4 that day, yes? but it IS them playing on the recording, and no discredit was done to their reputations, no?

  • @stressks yeah, i also knew it was recorded. itzhak and i discussed it the day after during his concert rehearsal

  • Itzhak and yoyo both have stradivarius instruments itzhaks violin is worth over 1 million dollars im sure he would rather be safe and not play than his instrument break

  • @ElReyCarmelo Please do know that neither of the muscians accually performance instruments where used during this the were givin to the players at the expense of the white house . Risking those instuments would be a sin.

  • @ElReyCarmelo I heard that they didn´t play. They did play this with their stradivaris in the studio and there they just did as if they play with other instruments . . . I m not sure that this information is true . . .

  • @AnsemDerWURST they played, but they played over a recording cuz these instruments dont stay in tune in that kind of weather.

  • @ElReyCarmelo omg!

  • @ElReyCarmelo people don't own stradivarius instruments, corporations do

  • @ElReyCarmelo people don't own stradivarius instruments corporations do, their violin/cello would be multi-million dollar instruments

  • @ElReyCarmelo Whats the point of HAVING the instrument if you cant play cause your scared its gonna break?... This performance is just wierd....

  • butros butros ghali!

  • still if you watch closely their bow strokes match perfectly with those of the music and I seriously doubt you can play with the exact same feeling every time.

and it's rather unfair to say it's prerecorded due to weather because that would be like saying it's impossible to play outside. I've performed outside many times.

Besides, they still brought their instruments outside, so they haven't avoided the weather. Look at the custom pegs on the violin! It's obviously not some crap stand-in.

  • no, Itzhak Perlman esta cada vez mas viejito .....

    T___T

  • @ilovecelticmusic yo se que esta tan triste,

    queria a conocer DX

  • Great Musicians!

But, in fact, americans can really buy everyting!

  • @bergkalis We americans can't buy - a proper healthcare system, an education system worth two shits, a body of citizens that isn't composed of fat morons, or a properly made car.

  • I have my grandfather's car which he used for 30 years, which my dad used for 22 years, and which I've now used for 2.

Its a chevy, and it's seen 54 years of use.

It reads 882,512 miles right now and it's on its 4th engine and 3rd transmission.

I think we americans can in fact buy a properly made car.

  • @khatholic Couldn't have put it better... lol!

  • @khatholic

this is a classical performance you moron. T.T

  • What a somber moment this was. The "people" had triumphed, and the music caught the moment and was very fitting for the occasion.

  • an unimpressive song? They're just performing. It's not like it's a contest or concert among musicians. It's a presidential inauguration. They were supposed to be just a piece of the great ceremony. You don't want them to out - do the president do yah?

I'm impressed that their instruements didn't go out in the 15 degree weather!

  • it was a recording it was faked. they practiced. the cold would have ruined their instruments

  • doesnt matter. They can play in the rain/snow, wouldnt matter for a while.

  • yes it does. rain will ruin the varnish. snow will ruin the varnish. cold will crack the instrament in a matter of 5 min. they would also have bow hair breakage and string breakage. i play violin and viola i would know

  • I totally understand, you must be a prodigy in your own respect, because you are accusing the two greatest instrumentalists of all time of "faking it." Unless, Yo Yo Ma is your private instructor /close friend and you guys like teasing each other.

  • Actually, it does.

Among other things, the strings would go out of tune in a matter of minutes. Especially if they're playing on the string.

  • how old is perlman?

  • Perlman is 64 Years Old

  • They actually pre-recorded this for the inauguration, since there's no way their instruments could have been reliable.

  • It should be noted that at those temperatures, wooden instruments like, say, all of those instruments, tend to do crazy shit intonation-wise, not to mention cracking and going to pieces like so much capellini pasta. Of course, that is an exaggeration, but the difficulties of performing outdoors - managing temperature, sound reinforcement, etc. etc. etc. = pre-recorded track. The quality of the composition is it's own discussion.

  • The clarinet was not made out of wood in this case.

It's a metal clarinet that costs several thousand dollars more than most wood ones do.

  • @FroggerbobT Its not metal. Its a leblanc legacy clarinet valued at over 5000pounds. Made of grenadilla wood with a cocobolo barrel

  • @thecarlschroeder If you think that this is a recording, you should go watch some of yo yo ma's and itzhak perlman's performances. These are not people that would fake a performance for fame/money; They play because they want to.

  • STOP LEAVING LONG RANTING COMMENTS

  • @EthanG197 why?

  • Why was this played at the inauguration? It doesn't seem like it fits for some reason.

  • are you kidding me!!?? this song was prob the most perfect sounding for this time in America. Obama coming to office after the worst 8 years America could have imagined in 2000. America is down, but a glimer of hope, not all is lost, but there is work to be done, it wont be easy, mny misteps, many failures, but America as it always does will rise above stronger than Ever. This piece says ALL of those things.

  • lol @ people saying: this is so unimpressive...these ppl can and are able to play infinitely better than this. but these were programmed by music directors and they were told which pieces to play most likely.

moreover, it's pre-recorded b/c the white house didn't want anything to happen.

anyone who's "unimpressed" by the performance should blame the music director not the players, since they certainly aren't unimpressive and would not have become so famous playing pre-recorded music.

  • yea your right, i never said it was the preformers fault. =)

  • What song is this?

  • im sorry to say, but this is such an unimpressive song, its a nice song, yes, but it doesnt show the true talent of these musicians!! you could most likely get an ordinary quintet to play that song. this really didnt impressme because i have seen amazing solos, duet works, and ect. with Itzhak perlman, and yo yo ma, and this definatly NOT the best they can do, they are AMAZING MUSICIANS

  • its not its a song!!!!!! its a piece........you dont hear anyone singing do you?

  • yes your 100% correct, srry i usually dont say song, but i was tired. =)

  • lol nah my college prof. just drilled that into mah head

  • "this is such an unimpressive song." wow u are an idiot

  • what makes me an idiot, explain?

  • I was actually quite surprised to learn that this was pre-recorded ! Now that I know, it's 100 times less impressive.

  • wats ur point? it was in freezing weather... they still played the piece. the fact there is also a recording playing along with it means that nothing could go wrong... this is a presidential inauguration. what would happen if say a string broke? that can't happen.

  • but.............. who's Yo-Yo Ma??????

  • Are you jking ? You dont no who's Yo Yo Ma?

  • wow.... that's all i can say.

  • are you serious? You don't know who Yo-Yo Ma is? all I can say is WOW...

  • Sconvolta dall'aspetto fisico di Itzhak Perlman...nn ho parole...è irriconoscibile...ke la polio sia peggiorata? m fa male vederlo così...nn è + lui... x'( ...ke tristezza

  • this is itzhak perlman ?

  • He isn't the best... he was thee best especially when he was a child but he wasn't able to gain that perfection back after he quit. Many have achieved passed him. Please don't get me wrong I melt everytime I see him play. His concerts are over priced and he doesn't even practice anymore. But I imagine now that his hands are worse than ever that he is the best with that sort of issue... I'm rambling on. yadda yadda

  • way better than the fake version

  • i understand it's a recording, but did perlman really use his strad? because it was very cold that day plus there was sunlight, and it would have been disastrous for the strad...

  • No Man he is not crazy !!!moreover really doesnt look like the 'Soil' 1714 Strad ... !!

  • it's not a recording... they was a recording playing, but he was also playing.

and to answer your question, probably not, just
