1974-75 must have been a bit of a "culture shock" for all associated with Man. United - just six years previous they were Champions of Europe, now they were on level pegging with clubs such as Cardiff, Orient, and even I believe, York City, who now of course are non-League!
But I suppose it was a good thing in a way, ie a chance to clear out the "dead wood" and rebuild. And I think its fair to say that since they returned to the top flight in 1975, United haven't really looked back.
I can remember it like yesterday. There was a mad stampede before the game outside the Stretford End turnstiles . I ended up right at the front of the queue !! but got seperated from my mates only to meet up with a couple of them afterwards on the pitch !. Such was the desperation to get inside the ground it was every man for himself. I even saw some fans jumping the turnstiles. Police estimated 25,000 were locked out. Happy care-free days...where did they ever go ?
(If only the current mob had the balls to fight Glazer... at least there's the haven of FC United, for the fans who aren't prepared to be Glazer-whores)
I was 11 and missed only one home game that year. My parents must have been crazy to let me go alone but they figured I could handle it. Was in the United Road for the Blackpool game - the same spot as 12 months earlier when King Denis scored for the bitters.
Memories, like the corners of my mind, if we had the chance to do it all again ...would we, You're damn right !.
Happy days when we all had nothing but the change in our 'patch pockets' with eight buttons on the waistband, a beautiful little film that i can't stop watching and sighing all the way through it.
this is mad!!.... i was 6 and this was my first ever game at Old Trafford... and we were sitting exactly where this camera was filming from!!... what a brilliant memory... everyone sat on old school benches in what is now the south stand.. right by stretford paddock...and at the end of the game we all stood up and folded it up!!...Pearson scored all the goals. MUFC loyal supporters.. average gate that year from memory was 58,000 in division 2
@PhilK1231 I don't know why you compare United's average 1974-75 attendance with Newcastles of today? Why not compare it with Newcastle's 74-75 attendance which was only 34,614 and in the first division to boot. United's current average is 75,304.
If my memory is correct. The Stretford end was fenced in. So at the end of the match the supporters from the Stretford end left the stadium and re-entered on both sides of the paddocks. Thats why the invasion comes from the paddock and not directly from the Stretford end. Does any else remember?
Remember it well !! 26 April 1975 - I think B Greenhoff, Pancho and Lou scored ..... What your wonderful nostalgic film doesn't show, is the fan who sat on the roof of the old "main" stand (above where you were) and took his shoes off on the roof !! I watched it from the old "cantilever" stand - i.e. stand H .... Great memories .... Tony
8p for a programe and 25p admission happy days when football was for real fans and not for the money men .Remember united fans on the fair and on the beach in fact all over blackpool but to be honest we were not a brilliant side but the seed was planted and the rest is HISTORY

I was at the swamp in '74 when we relegated u! wot a laff walkin round the stretford end chantin 'MU DIVISION TWO-MU DIVISION TWO- MU DIVISION TWO'. That pathetic attempt at a pitch invasion to get the game called off - did u no good we still beat u and we relegated u and did we take the piss. cant wait till the next time we relegate u scum
geofpet,Erm...no it wasnt an atempt at a pitch invasion ..it was one, which resulted in city fans shitting themselves and heading back to stockport. As for chanting at the stretford end. HAHAHAHAHA! Dream on milltown boy.
I was there in the crowd and on the pitch after the whistle. I was born only a few streets away from the ground, so yes i'm a manc and supported Utd then as I do now. Great footage, massive memories. Thankyou.
Pure nostalgia. Pre- Heysel, Hillsborough and Mrs Thatcher, of course. Today, we'd all be ASBOed and banned from OT for life. And as for the Bitter, he repeats the myth of City relegating us the previous season. Why not try to get a life instead of posting your pathetic rantings on the site ? Before I go, how many trophies have City won since this film was made ?
great to see manchester utd winning the Division 2 title!

Average was 48,388 or thereabouts
cajjer 2 years ago
@meninblack68
No, like the man above said, it was 48,000.
Newcastle's NOW is 44,000
Not so different, apart from the mountains of trophies after this event for Man U, (and beforeif truth be told) ZERO for Newcastle fans
And Man U fans are not blasted as "disloyal" as Newcastle fans have been, ludicrously by the press.

Ah, the good ole days before megastore: homemade scarves and banners, not 100 euro jerseys.
Love the pitch invasion. Love it. I was three in 1975 and wouldn't discover United for many more years...

Souvenir prog 8p. My my my, how things have changed now. Classic pitch invasion though, probably as much fun as the citeh game the year previous.
