Wow! This is just an utter display of dominance from Serena Williams. This match looks remarkably similar to the 2007 Aussie Open final against Sharapova.

The difference was that Sharapova never gave up, and that Safina threw in the towel long before the match was over. Sharapova basically couldn't serve, and therefore couldn't make it competitive, but she still gave it her all. She went down swinging like she always does. Safina was once again let negative emotion get the best of her and she gave up. It makes me sad that she is listed higher than Serena on the rankings.

I totally agree. I'm a Williams fan but I love Sharapova's fight. In that way she's just like Serena and Venus. Dinara is, unfortunately, so mentally weak.

serena is one of the only plays who can handle the pressure of being #1 and i think safina will loose the ranking soon, she needs to work on the consistency of her serving

The ranking system is messed up and all but Serena has just been injured for too long and hasn't played as much...I hope she does well in Madrid, if she not injured, if she does well and Venus does well a #1 & 2 ranking for the Williams sister is very near, as of 5/11/09 Serena is #2 and Venus #3....go Williams family!!!

It is totally not right, that safina has the #1 ranking. Serena is so much better. Safina should not hold her head up that high... Serena is the best female tennis player!!

i totally agree i understand the point system but HOW THE F#*K can someone be in 3 consecutive GS finals win 2, and not be trumped by someone who hasnt won 1 in the last year, not to mention EVER!!!

I have one better!! How can someone (Safina) be in 3 Grand Slam finals and pretty much get blown off the court each time, once by the player that should be number 1(Serena) and still hold the # ranking!!!?

Because Safina is more consistent. She plays more events and does consistently well at each one. Serena plays less events and plans her season around the 4 majors. Safina passed Serena because she had literally zero points to defend until May while Serena had to defend Miami and Charleston. Dinara will remain #1 until at least late July, but I'm curious as to what will happen when the US hard court season hits, and what effect her lost to Kuzzie at Roland Garros will have on her.

the wta ranking is based on quanity insteas of quality, as long as you play 30 matches per year and accumlate ponts, you can be number for a long time, plus dinara has made it to the final in 2 the semis , so she can remain no. , i figure if serena wanted to be no. all she has to do is play a couple more tournaments, and serena has said she would rather have slams,now 3 than the ranking, so would i. dinara just chokes at majors, smaller tournament she prevails, she needs to find out why.
