The media system was set up against non-frontrunners; the system was poor — got it. An intelligent person tries to work with the structure that exists (or to blow it all to hell); an unsuccessful one dies in it. Mike had a raw deal, but he made it that much worse by seeming mentally unstable. "This is a good idea, and, if you don't see that, you're a dumb-ass," isn't a great slogan for a politician who seeks to win office.

McCain who sings bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran, Bidden who talks about waring with China, Russia and India, Obama who kisses AIPACs ass and says all options are on the table as far as military and wants more troop in Afgh, and Palin the jesus Freak, and Mike is crazy???? No, you sycophant. I liked many of Mike Gravel's ideas (I still do), but, though those ideas were of merit, the way in which he put them forth was usually huffing-and-puffing, red-in-the-face, got-loose-from-his-strait-jack­et crazy.

Being right is nice, but a leader ought to be right and to know how to convince people he is.

I thought I'd covered the fact that Gravel was treated unfairly in the vast majority of the debates. So was every other non-Clinton/Obama/Edwards candidate; Mike's the only one who came across as he did. A shitty system doesn't excuse a shitty campaign, even if it contributes to it.
