  • this is a great song listen too when I lost everything due to the hard Economic recession, lost my woman I love and my Job.

  • @thewebmogul Sorry to hear about that man. Hope you get her and your job back. :)

  • @preving Thanks for cheering me up. I hope so too I get things back.

  • The lyrics are heavy. Leaving someone who will break down as a result. (S)he loved you, you left her/him. Damaged beyond repair, what an intense song.

  • The mesmerizing sounds of this song and the strain of sadness carried in word and tune are simply amazing. Surely, this is one of the hidden gems of the 80's that has been overlooked too much.

Stack up the music of "World Machine" and "Running in the Family" with any two CD's from any band - past or present, and you will see just how amazing these two 80's gems are. Long live Level 42!

  • I miss the 80's!!!!!

  • Level 42 are a very underrated band. This is a fantastic tune.

  • concerteza para mim não houve uma cançaõ que melhor exprimisse a minha vida há alguns anos atras

  • THE BEST!!!!

  • pour toi mon coeur,si loin de moi, cette chanson ne m a pas quitté de toute l année 93

  • Pure brilliance!!!!

  • Amazing! Im very impressive bout that heavenly sound..!!!.

  • i can mind 1 sunny day 20 years ago going fishing on a beautiful day in greenore co louth having borrowed my dads lada sitting listening to this album ,like it was yesterday ,but yesterday i didnt have 4 kids where do the years go.god bless every1 x

  • i've been a fan of Mark and the band for 20 years plus and have had the priviledge of meeting them after a gig in Cardiff - which by the way blew my mind. This song is one of my favourites, the best album i would say is "standing in the light" this album went around the world with me whilst serving in the navy back in the 80's and it got alot of respect. i recommend it ! bless you guys...........

  • This song makes me think of Bella and Edward from the movie New Moon.

  • does anybody know what song this album is from.

  • @johnied8509 Album is "Running in the family" 1986

  • Essa música é demais. O estilo, a batida... é realmente contagiante e é gostosa de ouví-la e curtí-la. Quem conhece um pouco de música me entende. A voz mesclada com os instrumentos faz boa combinação. Legal mesmo!!! Abraço a todos! William

  • This song is great! Haunting mood towards the end, deep lyrics, strong composition! Definitely not mainstream, but worthy of praise for their music!

  • well i wrote in the past about breaking up with my wife but this tune has brougth us 2gether...thank you.........

  • Another really great song! This is what songwriting is about! You can remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you 1st heard it!

  • Qué recuerdos tan bacanos de cuando era más jóven. Excelente canción.

  • love this song. (i can feel the tears)

  • I don't think I have ever heard this song..

  • wow. x

  • one of the best Bassist to grace the music industry, Mark king was the the King of bass in the 80's

  • Maybe in Europe! He's a great bassplayer but he wasn't KING of bass in the 80's!

  • Doet me weer denken aan die goeie ouwe tijd als ik dit hoor

  • AMAZING sound ...for a change !! THNX!!

  • One of their best, if not their best song - this clip has very good sound quality - nice job sucodecaju!

  • MARAVILHA!

  • A great song from Level 42, but this version is not the original, it's pretty much consiced and has different solo playing on guitar, does anybody have the original one which released with the album "Running the the family"??

  • Man....I was in the UK when this album was released. I absolutely love it! I have the album on CD which I bought at the time. Of course, you are spot on...this is not the full version which is on the album...it is much better!!!

  • Which one you mean much better? this one or the one released with the album, for me a like the full version.

  • I mean the one that was on the album...which is the full version as far as I know. This one is shorter and has extra background instruments added.

  • You're right and I absolutely agree with you, It seems that we have the same musical visions, do you like other songs by Level 42, like "children say" and "You're leaving now"?

  • I love Level 42's stuff....I think Running in the Family has been their best album. I am in Australia, but they never took off here. I don't understand why. I remember travelling throughout the UK and Europe listening to that album...I have some of the most wonderful memories from listening to their music!

  • I do too, this music reminds me of the good old days when I was in high school, now I'm 38, it's about 23 years away, and I still remember each and every single moment of that period, may I ask you where are you from?

  • Pardon the delay! IT was a little after high school for me (i'm 46!) but boy does it bring back memories! I am in Melbourne BTW....how about you?

  • I'm from Baghdad - Iraq !! you may be surprised, but it is the truth, I'm an Iraqi man who still live in Baghdad.

  • That is totally awesome!!!! All I can say is stay safe....we all are most concerned for you and your countrymen. Here in Australia, we are very lucky we have not had the terrible things you have had to endure. I pray that soon your country will return to peace, prosperity and happiness!

  • Thanks so much, I really appreciate that vision of yours, here in Baghdad everything is different than other parts of the world, but I still believe that one day - hopefully soon - this gloomy atmosphere will be gone, your prays will encourage me and those like me to achieve peace and happiness, thank you once again, and God bless you

  • I pray that we can sit together under a palm tree and share some great music while we eat the food of your land...

    TJ

  • Oh, it's my pleasure, you will be recieved with a great Arabian hospitality, thanks a lot for your wonderful words.

  • Mark King, I think, is an icon, a bassist of rank particularly during 80-90. When I worked at Deltron Electronics in Högsbo, in came a stressed "Rodder" in need of help. Proud Anders (me) could fix Mark King's wireless kit for the bass when they would play at Scandinavium, Gothenburg, I think it was in '89. :)

  • Muy buen tema , al escucharlo recuerdo a una amiga muy especial.

  • saw them in concert with tina turner 1988...fabulous!!!!

  • My best friend back in the day was really going through a white music phase, and he kept bugging me to listen to this European Group called Level 42. I have been hooked on this group's music ever since and this is my favorite song from them. A lesson to learn: Always be open to new things.

  • mark king the lead singer is a great bassist

  • @chillnndc amen

  • ME MUEROOOOOOO !!!!!!!! Amo esta cancioooooonnnnn...... Que temazooo por favor......quiero bailarlo pegado a una linda dama.... gracias por subirlo

  • did he write this in an elevator??

  • yes. At Level 42 Mark King got inspired :-)

Best track of Level 42!!!!! Definately!

  • level 42 was first and foremost a great funk band. the weepy love songs came later. "a physical presence" was the best they ever got.

  • good man in a storm was an excellent track

  • hahaha. thanks. now i can't stop laughing during this song.

  • Beautiful music. The lyrics are cold but necessary sometimes. Love :48

  • some of the the most poignant lyrics ever written i reckon

  • I'll be 50 in September!-Still remember this track with bittersweet memories.Went to see Kinger and the boys last year in Bristol-brilliant.

  • where can I get the tabs for this song?

  • This song is genius. Incredible voice...incredible musical arrangement. I miss this style soooo much.

  • ...great song from a band in their prime...oh well, don`t mean to bother anyone...haven`t seen them for a while...but this album was magnificent...I went to that tour and the one after...both were great...I eventually lost track then...but again...what a great song...

  • Sitting in a Ford Escort holding hands.........listening to this,

where have all the years gone?

  • Great song, reminds me of being younger and dreaming of my first crush, ah how life used to be.

  • I just came home from the Level 42 concert here in Utrecht (the Netherlands). It was one of the best concerts I've seen in years. They also played this song, and it was a emotional high point of the evening for me. Particularly after a rough day at work, hearing that another 6 people are being laid off because of the financial crisis. The feeling of it all being "over" really had a impact on me. Anyhow the taped the concert for an upcoming DVD, and I know it will be a great one!

  • our relationship had finnish she still loved me ..when the house was sold and it was the last time we were toghether to hand in the keys she kissed me and i gave her this song it said every thing i couldnt

  • been there mate.

  • This song just touches my soul...you can feel the pain..the love...the tears....Just an amazing song.

  • awesome song,so sad and moving, their finest song to date?

  • am now in my 40`s but this song has a meaning for me because I wrote a letter to my 1st love telling them we were over and that same day i heared this song and it meant everything.

  • he was in the navy at the time and was`nt the best boyfriend but i was heartbroken because i loved him but he was`nt always the best boyfriend. but 20 yrs later this song still has a meaning

  • The complexity of their music still amazes me.

  • It's about the end of love. A rare thing in a love song.

  • I always find people to be fans of Level 42 very nice (Y)

If you go on music videos of the "nowadays" people just seem to diss each other or slag one another.

I was quite gutted when they never played this song the other week live, i was suprised in the amount of "young" fans they were along with me, as im 18. An amazing night i just hope they will be touring again in the next couple of years.

  • totally agree - when Mark asked which song to play next I tried to shout out ITS OVER as loud as i could. but he didnt hear me :( lol

    adore this song!!!!!!!!!!!

i was surprised at the number of younguns. How did you get into Level 42?!

  • I dont know, i somehow downloaded lessons in love when i was downloading some music, i've always liked 80's music.

I then heard Running in the family on tele and thought i like the two songs and bought a few albums and just progressed from there.

  • Had this song buzzing around in my head all day today for some reason.. Just had to find it on here. Great ballad. So moving and still makes me want to blub! Level 42 were one of the best bands in 80s... in the days when true artists wrote, arranged and performed their own songs (Take note Simon Cowell!) Saw them live heaps of times. Absolute quality musicianship. Mark King's a bass genius, but Phil Gould's drumming was so underrated. A great inspiration to me! Thanks for the posting

  • ...same like me, it goes around & around.

    You described it so good.

Many times, as i was young, the "bombastic" sound at 3:00 makes me shiver - but it´s the lonelyness beginning to appear at 3:25.

No one likes to go - this song makes me cry sometimes.

    ...i can feel the tears...

  • I like "still in your arms" by level 42 a lot better, but I couldn't find it on you tube

  • That bass is now worth a Ferrari !

  • What a great song! I love some of their slow stuff - ballads. But there are many jems also in the energy department.

  • Amazing ballad by Level 42, love it.....

  • Its just one of those songs that you will never forget and will always remember where you were when you first heard it..... a classic slow song that stirs the emotions!

  • magic pure magic

  • 1987 just passed out in basic training for the RAF and saying goodbye to the girl who I went out with for that time. A 16 year crying polishing my boots whilst listening to this song. A true Classic!!!

And then name the keyboard player. Otherwise just go away

  • Theys are the names your after Mark King bass player and lead singer/ Mike Lindup on the organ and lead singer/ Rowland 'Boon' Gouldon guitar/ Phil Gould on brums / and i think it's the Jay Dee Supernatural III bass guitar

I was involved in a bass player dispute and challenging a dumb american. Sorry.
