  • I thought Jared shaved his Fro then ate em and we get this guy...

  • Another way around it is to use a camera that syncs at all speeds with non fp flashguns and syncs at all speeds with studio strobes because it doesn't use a narrow slit at high shutter speeds. e.g. Nikon D40, D50 and many others.

  • Man you have some of the info right but if you are going to preach like you are the gospel. You should take time to fully understand!

  • that intro music is too loud. fyi.

  • Jared??? just kidding guys!!!!

  • well done

  • man i really need help...i have a canon flash that has the sync speed function..working really well.but .as soon as i take it off camera..that sync speed stop working and i see the black stripe again...is it because my remotes? do i need a pair of thoese super expensive pocket wisards? or what m i doing wrong?

  • Fro Know Photo said without enthusiams... Sad Bro!

  • Actually the shutter doesn't move any faster once it gets to about 250th. It physically can't.

The space between the curtains gets narrower at higher shutter 'speeds'. The flash fires once the first curtain opens fully, but because the second curtain follows it so closely (the faster the shutter speed the closer the two get) you get the band of black.

    Also, drifter281lottie331:

The YN460 II flash cannot do hi-speed sync.

In speedlights, HSS is what separates the boys from the men.

  • hey great video..i really need your help though. I need a flash for my nikon d3100..what should i get..without breaking the bank..money is a little tight but i really need a flash..

  • @GmenGraphics YONGNUO YN460 II flash is a great flash for the price, but, there is one issue, it is a manual flash it is not TTL nor TTL-i. It is a slave flash (mean you can work wirelessly) and it works with my d3100, it costs around £20-£30.

  • @GmenGraphics SB700 is the lowest I'd go... I got a SB900... Otherwise, I would try improvise and work with the pop-up flash... Do stuff like putting something in front of the flash to help bounce it in a different direction or soften the harshness of the flash...

  • Lol u wide open

  • Phenomenal vid Greg.

  • Great! Thank you so much about this VID

  • Thanks Greg.. once again you make flash so easy when shown the correct way you do it!

  • Greg: Aint the SB-800 discontinued already?

  • @1986Chaitanya Not sure but they should be! The 700/900s are so much easier to use you are better off with them. Plus the 700 can be used as a master & slave, just like the 900.

  • On my older Canon 400D I have a Speedlite 430EX II, and it has a "high-speed sync option", which fires the flash even when I'm at 1/4000 shutter speed, and it works fine. The Nikon flashes don't do this?

  • @rzr82 Of course they do. I mentioned it in the video.

  • @gregorycazillo My bad then, I must have missed it somehow.

  • I think I'm learning something, but my question is why go above 1/250s with the flash anyway, isn't that fast enough already?

  • @bratvlad not always fast enough, imagine you are shooting in a very bright area and have too much light, it happens, having a faster shutter speed will eliminate the ambiant light and let you control the light better with the flash.

  • @S10V8com exactly. Its all about controlling the ambient and flash mix.

  • @bratvlad Sometimes you need a faster shutter speed to mix the ambient light to produce a certain affect.

  • Awesome video again Greg on using flash, keep the series coming...

  • hey guys have you ever used an Alien Bees Strobe, if so what do you think of them, I've heard they are very high quality, but I don't know. Thanks again :)

  • @meggawatts We use White Lighting strobes, the Alien Bees big brother.

  • Thanks Greg for another great video....

  • "much butter"

  • what if your a beginner to photography and your shoots action sports would you still want to buy the 600 or higher flash cause their really expensive

  • @austinh430 most sports you will not shoot with the flash.

  • @JaredPolin @austinh430 Unless you are at an inside event like indoor soccer.

  • @JaredPolin yeah and i skateboard so whenever we go to the indoor parks their not very well lit and its hard to get a shot to turn out well with out an external flash and thanks for the help!

  • @austinh430 Yes so you can keep your shutter speed higher or have keep your DOF shallow and shoot wide open.

  • @austinh430 If you're mostly gonna shoot action sports with high image quality the price of a flash should be the least of your worries, because a good tele-lens is going to make your wallet feel alot more raped than this flash which you don't need anyway ;)

  • It's John Goodman! =D

  • That's interesting. I routinely shoot my D70s (manual exposure mode) with an old Vivitar 283 up to 1/4000 without a problem. *occasionally* I'll see some *minor* banding, even if all of the lighting is coming from flash. Do you know why this would be? And why newer equipment is limited to such a low speed? Thanks!

  • @brandonbush1 The d70s is one of only a few cameras without a sync speed limitation. Nikon must have built it differently. There must be a reason why they don't still use that technology, could be a reliability or accuracy issue, not sure. Maybe someday....

  • @brandonbush1 The D70s was built differently, not sure how but its one of a few cameras that don't have a high speed sync problem. Banding is probably caused by the strobes power setting.

  • @gregorycazillo Yeah, the manual says the sync speed is 1/500s, and it will enforce that if you put is in PAS modes, but as you said there doesn't really seem to be a physical limitation. But I guess once I upgrade I shouldn't worry, since people like you with a lot more experience than me don't seem to be limited by the slower sync speeds

  • @brandonbush1 That would be the max sync speed WITHOUT turning on AutoFP/HSS. Both Canon and Nikon cameras will automatically adjust the flash depending on which shutter speed you are using.

  • lets see the d7000!

  • amazing what is hes channel? good teacher men

  • Flashes are expensive, so I suggest that people check out Yongnuo flashes. I've heard good things about them.

  • @ddnn3 The problem is that they won't support AutoFP/HSS like the Nikon/Canon strobes do.

  • @gregorycazillo Ya I know :-( But it's a compromise some people may be willing to make for the savings in cost.

  • Im so happy everytime I see you or Jared uploaded another vid! You ARE awesome guys!

  • @NebulusJones I agree, not often i check otu youtube every day. But now i do, because of Jared and Gregs videos :)

  • @NilsenPhotography You can have YouTube send you emails when we post new ones if you like.

  • Awesome vid! Can't wait until you get into the different types of diffusers and what each one does!

  • you ain't tryna make your own youtube channel?

  • Hi greg. Amazing video as always.

One of the thing I dont fully understand is, when you use lets say an sb 900 as commander for CLS you have to have it mounted on the camera right?

So you dont use it anymore for exposing because it is on camera... but, isnt it a waste to have such an expensive flash just to control the other speedlights?

I am sure I am missing something here. Thanks!

  • @kauxkaux Well if you have a camera with a pop-up flash which most do then you can use that for CLS if it has it built in to the camera. Then you don't have to use a speedlight to trigger it. Only the really high end cameras don't have pop ups. Good luck!

  • @kauxkaux waste? No. I prefer reliability and compatibility. My D3/D3s does not have a built in flash so those are my options. I will use it for the exposure sometimes, just depends on the situation. Also one of the perks of using the pro bodies ;).

  • I wondered why that was the limit, good explanation!

  • gr8 tips sir! very very helpful.

btw love the intro music, what is it?

  • @oscarhalder Custom music we had someone create.

  • Thank you Greg :) Learned something again :D

  • You can set your shutter speed up to 1/8000 a sec with highspeed sync on the 900/800/700

  • hey greg what camera are you using

  • @aliannab2009 I use a D3 and D3s

  • nice work Greg, man your equipment and mine are identical, I also use a SB-26 for the slave quite often, also I love my Q flash with my D3x.. wow. I wonder if we have the same taste in women, cause then we would have problems in a bar lol :)

  • Greg, day by day, your 'photho'..in the intro/outro is bumping higher to meet Jared's.!;)...And i like!:D

  • cool :)

  • Great vid. Can you make another one, about how to trigger flash that's not on the camera? What is needed for it and stuff.

  • @MrBennosuke wireless flash trigger

  • @MrBennosuke I would also like to see this, as i have a nikon d60 with no commander mode and would like to control a sb-900

  • @everitt11 I have the same think but a SB-600 :)

  • @everitt11 CLS system video is coming. You need to have a SB800 SB900 or SB700 to control a SB900 when using a D60.

  • @gregorycazillo cheer's know of any good but cheap wireless triggers or full ttl cords thou, as it is cheaper than buying a new head

  • @everitt11 You can buy a SC-29 cable. Unfortunately we don't recommend cheap gear.

  • @everitt11 You need to purchase another 900 or 700.

  • @gregorycazillo Think ill save the £300 towards a D7000, cheers for your advice might buy the cord thou looks good.
