I don't really know what goes on in his mind, but in the video for Smile! (2002) he portrayed despair with such unnerving intensity as to make me believe he's been there.
Sometimes when an artist expresses dark emotions there's a sense of connection to something real and a bit scary, and I got that feeling from the Smile! video... but maybe he's just an incredibly talented actor and his wry interpretation stems from his innate sense of irony. This is the same artist who turned Lucia Di Lammermoor into a happy song!
This version /watch?v=ekLgaRZ0Mgc has translations (in the More Info section) of both the original and Vitas' version. The whole translation makes a bit more sense. I don't think he was talking about "leaving the stage" long-term; he was just saying that sometimes he needs to take a rest. He works so hard. Dear Vitas, rest whenever you need to: your loyal fans will still be here waiting for you.
he has seemed tired in his recent interviews, etc. i hope he isnt over-working himself. i think he really cares for his fans and wants to make people happy so much. what he doesnt realise is how much his fans care for him too and care more for his wellbeing than his entertainment. i hope he isnt getting ill as that would be awful :-(.
