  • Anyone know the tuning on his bass? The 6th string looks a little too thick to be a B-string… or maybe I'm just too thick-headed to tell…

  • @BassGuitarGuy128 i think he's always in standard BEADGC

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN MYUNG! WE, THE FANS, ARE ALWAYS FASCINATED BY YOUR TALENT, PASSION, DEDICATION AND OF COURSE... SILENCE. :)

  • John Myung raped and killed a girl in 1994. The case was dismissed on the grounds that she "walked it off."

  • @MlKEPORNTOY I see you everywhere on these vids dude! Every time I see you name I fucking crack up! Best gimmick user I've seen anywhere in quite a while!!!

  • this makes me ... fly, its so relax

    im high as fuck

  • this is better than fast technical bass solos.. Just groove

  • Might as well be playing guitar. Where's the groove and the meat

  • Comment removed

  • Are you criticizing his style, his technique, or his song writing abilities?

  • @MrPooToob Well, since you're such a legendary musician go make your own video and show us all how it's done genius. No one is keeping you here.

  • melodía que me lleva a otro mundo

  • i made a guitar cover of this song, check it out :)

  • he is living in his own world

  • 240p we meet again

  • I first heard this about a year ago and I thought it was really infectious. I later heard a Carly Simon song, "Coming Around Again" and I swear they are the same...

  • An Asian with a huge instrument. I guess there's a first time for everything.

  • Myung was married?

  • @MitchellBeazley still is

  • @Stratocoaster08 Then why does he not wear a ring anymore?

  • @MitchellBeazley Some people don't wear rings when doing certain things, like playing live, for fear of losing them. Here if it fell off it wouldn't be so much of a problem, but playing live at a different place each night with 2,000 plus people, especially when moving your fingers as much as he does, it can be risky.

  • @Stratocoaster08 Ya your right. But I was just querious kuz hes really quite to :P

  • @MitchellBeazley No I see where you're coming from :). It's funny actually, he's married to a woman who was in an all-female metal band called meanstreak, and the two other members of the band are married to Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci lol.

  • @Stratocoaster08 Holy shit! Really? I didint know that :P Thats actully really cool :)

  • a true master of his art...fantastic

  • Top comments--I'm hysterical

  • I used to play bass like that...until I took an arrow to the knee

  • @RingoFreakingStarr hahaha nice dude! DAFUQ

  • I'm going to attempt to play this at an audition for a music program in my school and if anyone could give me a link to the tab of this I would greatly appreciate it.

  • He plays his own song the hardest way.. It's alot easier to play all the open strings with your thumb, but allright.

    This is great, anyways!

  • @bassguy1708 I'm sure his right hand is very, very developed from his style of music that this could be easier/more comfortable for him, or just not be much of a difference.

  • @bassguy1708 heçs too boss for that

  • I was learning this song for the longest time.. and I just stopped and I don't know why D: I gotta finish it

  • His member is tiny.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY Are you kidding? That's like the biggest instrument I've ever...

    Oh. Lol.

  • This is the most relaxing tune i have ever heard

  • All of the musicians in Dream Theater would have been better off not having joined Dream Theater and used their talent elsewhere. Except James he could use his talent at McDonalds.

  • @xxdanxexx LOL You know, James actually writes the vocal harmonies and stuff, don't forget that. And those are simply brilliant. But yes when it comes down at the singing itself, he could be better off as "Ronald The Singing Clown" at freaking mcdonalds ahaha

  • @xxdanxexx Quite right, old bean. I bet James could make a mean hot fudge sundae. After all everyone's got one thing that they're good at, and making those sundaes looks pretty easy.

  • ya know i wonder if he has them two tung bass's still

  • wao ..

  • Awsome bass grove.

  • I come back from work...Stressed as hell! confused in the head...I put on my headphones listen to this song....and there it is...peace of mind...A bass guitarist who touches lives...Ladies and gentlemen...The one and only John Myung...I salute you!

  • @SambarVadaBlues listen to Victor Wooten as well ;) songs as ''us 2'' ,more love, and ''sometimes i laugh ''

  • WTF ?'

  • I listen to dream theater almost exclusively to hear this guy repeatedly rip my face off through the magic of epic bass.

  • He's absolutely the most cool dude in DT. His absolute lack of need to show off constantly is what I respect most. Plus, the fact that although his skills are fucking amazing, he'd rather focus on the melody and composition, playing ultra-fast only when there's the "need" for it.

  • damn what a great bass player but yet he is underrated

  • thats some super nice dad guitar.

  • john is faster than me even if i use a 4 string bass...its like...he plays triple notes in every string...by the time he went all the down and up im still in half way with my 4 string bass :D

  • You know, i used to play the guitar. Then I heard of John Petrucci. So I gave up and said, ok, I'll play the bass. Then I heard of John Myung. As you may suspect, i now successfully play the whistle.

  • @furyfueled epic comment is epic dude :)

  • @furyfueled

    Jiri Stivin. sorry man.

  • @furyfueled /watch?v=2mjlxufre5w

  • @omrix2 ...(watches video)...(smashes whistle in two and bangs head to the wall)...

  • 70 people dislike this video because they are deaf.

  • Killing Flea much! legend

  • amazinggggggggg

  • Okay an auto-replay button is a completely feasible feature right??

This thing is so fucking addictive!!

  • convengamos que de todo lo que hace este pibe, esto es lo mas simple xD

  • it's some awesome inspiration

  • 70 people... are losers.. ahah

  • You know a musician is pro when they make it look easy.

  • he paralyzed his pinky to focus on only 3 fingers, and thats the secret.. now you know why his wife is VERY VERY HAPPY

  • cool

  • lyrics by john myung

  • does anyone know if he's using a pedal, and what kind if he is? he gets amazing sound out of it

  • @ikeeln00bz

I don't about any extras but I know he uses a chorus effect to make those harmonics ring really nicely.

  • @ikeeln00bz Sounds like he's using a very mild chorus effect.

  • Whats this dvd called i need to get it???

  • @PlatypusBassist Progressive Bass Concepts. It's uploaded on YT and you can find the booklent in .pdf online. But I'd buy it.

  • @BassGrindcore It's out of print and the Video hasn't been avalible for years (It was on VHS and never updated to DVD unlike the rest of DTs instructional videos and this one is the best :( )

  • is this the best music on earth, or what?

  • By the way, to those who say this song is easy.. I dare you to try it, its actually pretty damn hard

  • Esos armónicos del final son majestuosos...

  • It was Pull Me Under and I guess IT WAS before 93. Time has a way of getting away from me. Err, maybe I have a way of getting lost with time.

  • I became a dream theater fan in 93, 94, or 95, I can't remember. I first heard them in December with an MTV debut. Within a decade I came to the conclusion that John is the best string player in the band and I'm sure John would agree ;)

  • @SixOneCyx Which John O.o

  • @MrIbanezExclusive That was the point.

  • @SixOneCyx I see what you did there :)

  • @SixOneCyx Well said

  • Reminds me a bit of "Illusions" by Shawn Lane.

  • love the kinda dissonant feel to it...

  • thanks to uploader to tell me that it s a 6 string bass

  • what bass is that?

  • John Myung once fingered a women...

    She was cured of Cancer.

  • @TotalOverUltraSaLLy hahahahahahahhahahahahahah

  • AND ON THE EIGHTH DAY, JOHN MYUNG CREATED THIS SONG!

  • Myung is The Silent Man

  • @AlteredDimension

    Triads? :-P

  • I love this guy! He brings to me the highest hope to be a good bassman. thanks for existing, John!

  • It was a joke.. ok?? --?

  • this proves bass solos dont have to be fast to be amazing and inspirational..

  • @zipline140 no, they just have to be really really good ;D

  • God had kissed his hands.

  • This is why i play bass

  • Thank you John for such emotionnal music, your name will stay in my mind forever...

  • Strange arguing about the guitarrists not liking the video and stuff... i am a guitarrist myself and for me a good musician should be able to like any instrument, i love piano pieces, orchestrated stuff, harp, violin and lots of other instruments, just like i truly liked this video, and admire myung's work, and i like other bassists like jaco pastorius or victor wooten. I just don't see any reason for this arguing at all...

  • John freaking rules! Laid back, zero ego, kicks ass on every song and quietly goes about his business .

  • @mikeybo13 reminded me of bill hicks XD

  • imagine myung with beard

  • Doesnt even look like he's fricken trying.....hes so amazing.

  • Myung is a singer..

  • Comment removed

  • You can't compare John Myung to anyone.

    He's just...

    John Myung.

  • John Mayung is like Gedde Lee on crack haha love it

  • marry me Myung..please!!!!!

  • @ningkoy13

Well i hope you are a good mother because im gonne make him my godfather

and then make my parents kick me out, so that he can teach me the ways of Bass and Progressive Metal!

  • This reminds me of the Marble Hill Zone music in the first Sonic game.

  • This song is so amazing.... I can only hope that one day my bass playing reaches even half of his level

  • Have this set as alarm ringtone... And every morning I fall asleep again, so I can listen to this again :-)

  • He ALONE gives respect to bassists. lol

  • john myung and herman li like brothers :D

  • @sirjakass but one's got talent flowing out every orifice and one can barely coordinate his fingers on guitar.

  • ah i love u myung <3

  • awesome groove!!

    myung kicks ass!

  • He sounds like 3 people lol

  • My idol...That's him!

  • just bought myself a 6 string just to play this...and i just finished learning it.

    Feels good, man.

  • i don't believe in John Myung

  • like . .

  • Just discovered this guy thanks to youtube... he's amazing !!!

  • he is very good but he has wrong technique....myung-technique 1-0

  • @MrWest13Block Huh? This guy's so gifted that whatever he does IS THE technique.

  • How could you! How could you!!!

    Why bass r so underestimated...

  • this guy is awsome , any1 that says hes not either doesn't appreciate music or doesn't appreciate bass...or is a tosser :}

  • my boyfriend plays the bass guitar much better than you and he don't have a arm, he lost his left arm on battlefield

so now you really know how bad are you isn't it?

  • dont get me wrong i like john myung hes pretty damn good, way beyond me, and im sure he has influenced many, many musicians....but hes just not amazing.....pretty good not amazing

  • @314313546 I'm not sure how much of his DT work you've heard. He's definitely amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • I think the biggest question is, "where is John Myung right now, and where are those who hates him?"

He has influenced thousands, if not millions, of bass guiatrists all over the world. I'm from the Philippines and he's pretty big here. Maybe because we'd rather watch someone with skills rather than watch someone who just runs around and scream.

  • Kid(Probably Slipknot fan): That guitar have less strings..

    Me: That's not a guitar, it's a Bass

    Kid: Oooh.. I see..

Me: Do you know what a Bass is?

    Kid: Hmm.. no..

Me: A bass is a low-frequancy string instrument, that gives the low power to equilize the song and to support the rythm section along with the drums..

    Kid: ????

Me: --' It's that thing that sounds like: "Dun, dun, dun"

Kid: Oooh, that large guitar??? I see.. :D

    Me: (EPIC FAIL)

  • @Burrumbumbum I've been there. Just like most bass players, appreciators and/or fans have.

  • @Burrumbumbum that bass has 6 strings so the same amount as as a guitar but the strings aren't the same... just sayin'

  • @Burrumbumbum God, I wish I could say that. All I get to say is, "I do the solos 'n shit." :/

    -A.J.

  • the slapping noise every time he plucks a note and the shitty tone doesnt help

  • This sounds like poo poo to me

  • Does he pluck the strings with his ring finger as well ?

Or is it just moving with the middle finger without plucking a string ?

  • @Boobtube123456 he does both things, he uses the third finger to pluck a lot, but also moves it along with the second when he uses that one

  • @xSidvarg thanks for the reply, appreciate it !!

  • Comment removed

  • Before Paul Gray learned to play slipknot songs, he practiced on spice girls songs..

Before John Myung learned to play DT's songs, he practiced on slipknot songs..

  • @Burrumbumbum Who the fuck is Paul Gray?

  • @SRVMETAL He was the bassist for Slipknot.

  • @Burrumbumbum

When did Slipknot learn how to play ?

  • When they invited John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy to play guitars and drums on their albuns x)

  • @Burrumbumbum

    You just made my point.

  • @Burrumbumbum Myung was actually practicing Rush and Iron Maiden at twice the speed.

  • hahahah this sounds like porno music D::D

  • He is the best for progressive

  • Beautiful piece

  • Oh boys, please dont try to find this boring or interesting or amazing or whatever, for god sake THIS IS A TECHNICAL STUDIO! Its purpose is to improve the technique of the bass player who plays it not to entertain the one who hear it!

  • i started playing with technical bass like jaco pastorius and victor wooten, i remember laughing at john myung because his playing was so lame.

but now im starting to relate to his sound and personality. i think imma leave funk, thumb technique and all that. and focus on fingering, and go with the john myung direction. and after trying the dark eternal night, wtf! it's freaking hard as hell. sure it's not as showy as it looks, but some parts are fast as hell, and the piece is freaking huge!!!

  • All the idiots saying this isn't groovy need to learn tone terminoligy:

    Groovy = Smooth

    Gnarly = Coarse

A groove is a smooth, trancelike song. This is, by all means, smooth and trancelike. Myung's rhythms are flawless, his harmonies are beautiful, and his energy is relaxed. Learn to appreciate the art of music before claiming to be a musician. And for the record, this isn't out of his element; he's a Light Jazz/Classical Bassist who joined a Prog Metal band.

  • @DancingTofu2 1 correction FORMED a prog metal band... hes a founding member of dt

  • I understand everyone that has said this song is not "groovy" enough, I first listened to it some time ago and thought it was boring as hell, but some days ago I listened to it again and now I can't stop hitting the play button over and over. Of course it's not the most difficult song, but I think part of Myung's genius is to take something simple and create such a beautiful song

  • fuck you! i have a 12 string bass!

  • jackie chan? ..^^

  • I dont know why I even bother reading comments about musical content here on youtube. If yah don't like the music then why don't you just crap your pants in frustration.

  • im a bassist and id give this song probably a 5 or 6 out of 10. Definitely not that complex or difficult, but it doesn't have to be to sound good. It is lacking in the groove but john Myung doesn't play groovy stuff, and for being out of his genre it sounds decent. myung is a pretty good bassist, wouldn't say amazing, but this certainly isn't one of his more difficult songs

  • First of all, its not a song.

Second, something doesnt need to be difficult to be cool.

  • I love it ;D

People always hating when someone tries something different, well fuck you, let him do what he wants!

  • @andrewbautista23 Andrew Bautista, biggest douche bag in history.

  • @Ardolino21 It's just you :P

  • @joshiscool0777 possibly...but that should never be called a groove Dream Theater lack groove and feel. At all levels!

  • @Ardolino21 WHY SO MAD BRAH ????

    U SO BUTTFRUSTRATED BRO????

U MIRIN' HIS EPIC BASS SKILLS BREH???

  • @MetallHead9 I dont know if they are mad bass skills, however, i play a guitar, not bass...so maybe its just a bassist thing but literally. that wasnt groovey...is all I was saying. but its called Solar GROOVE..i dont admire his skills. not there...as thats really simple i cant imagine a half decent bassist having trouble with that...

  • Beginning 2:26... that's a seriously cool groove!

  • John is my major inspiration in bass. i have played for almost 9 years now and have finally gotten a 5 stringed bass. i play dream theater songs all the time with it and when i get enough money im gonna buy a 6 string and play even more bass songs that require that high C-string

  • Try combining bass and e guitar,,, man, he nailed it,..

  • Wicked!!! As expected, he's número uno!!!

  • ahmm the groove???

  • Where's the groove ? x)
