@MlKEPORNTOY I see you everywhere on these vids dude! Every time I see you name I fucking crack up! Best gimmick user I've seen anywhere in quite a while!!!
I first heard this about a year ago and I thought it was really infectious. I later heard a Carly Simon song, "Coming Around Again" and I swear they are the same...
@MitchellBeazley Some people don't wear rings when doing certain things, like playing live, for fear of losing them. Here if it fell off it wouldn't be so much of a problem, but playing live at a different place each night with 2,000 plus people, especially when moving your fingers as much as he does, it can be risky.
@MitchellBeazley No I see where you're coming from :). It's funny actually, he's married to a woman who was in an all-female metal band called meanstreak, and the two other members of the band are married to Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci lol.
I'm going to attempt to play this at an audition for a music program in my school and if anyone could give me a link to the tab of this I would greatly appreciate it.
@bassguy1708 I'm sure his right hand is very, very developed from his style of music that this could be easier/more comfortable for him, or just not be much of a difference.
All of the musicians in Dream Theater would have been better off not having joined Dream Theater and used their talent elsewhere. Except James he could use his talent at McDonalds.
@xxdanxexx LOL You know, James actually writes the vocal harmonies and stuff, don't forget that. And those are simply brilliant. But yes when it comes down at the singing itself, he could be better off as "Ronald The Singing Clown" at freaking mcdonalds ahaha
@xxdanxexx Quite right, old bean. I bet James could make a mean hot fudge sundae. After all everyone's got one thing that they're good at, and making those sundaes looks pretty easy.
I come back from work...Stressed as hell! confused in the head...I put on my headphones listen to this song....and there it is...peace of mind...A bass guitarist who touches lives...Ladies and gentlemen...The one and only John Myung...I salute you!
He's absolutely the most cool dude in DT. His absolute lack of need to show off constantly is what I respect most. Plus, the fact that although his skills are fucking amazing, he'd rather focus on the melody and composition, playing ultra-fast only when there's the "need" for it.
john is faster than me even if i use a 4 string bass...its like...he plays triple notes in every string...by the time he went all the down and up im still in half way with my 4 string bass :D
You know, i used to play the guitar. Then I heard of John Petrucci. So I gave up and said, ok, I'll play the bass. Then I heard of John Myung. As you may suspect, i now successfully play the whistle.
@BassGrindcore It's out of print and the Video hasn't been avalible for years (It was on VHS and never updated to DVD unlike the rest of DTs instructional videos and this one is the best :( )
I became a dream theater fan in 93, 94, or 95, I can't remember. I first heard them in December with an MTV debut. Within a decade I came to the conclusion that John is the best string player in the band and I'm sure John would agree ;)
Strange arguing about the guitarrists not liking the video and stuff... i am a guitarrist myself and for me a good musician should be able to like any instrument, i love piano pieces, orchestrated stuff, harp, violin and lots of other instruments, just like i truly liked this video, and admire myung's work, and i like other bassists like jaco pastorius or victor wooten. I just don't see any reason for this arguing at all...
dont get me wrong i like john myung hes pretty damn good, way beyond me, and im sure he has influenced many, many musicians....but hes just not amazing.....pretty good not amazing
I think the biggest question is, "where is John Myung right now, and where are those who hates him?"
He has influenced thousands, if not millions, of bass guiatrists all over the world. I'm from the Philippines and he's pretty big here. Maybe because we'd rather watch someone with skills rather than watch someone who just runs around and scream.
Kid(Probably Slipknot fan): That guitar have less strings..

Kid: ????
Me: --' It's that thing that sounds like: "Dun, dun, dun"
Oh boys, please dont try to find this boring or interesting or amazing or whatever, for god sake THIS IS A TECHNICAL STUDIO! Its purpose is to improve the technique of the bass player who plays it not to entertain the one who hear it!
i started playing with technical bass like jaco pastorius and victor wooten, i remember laughing at john myung because his playing was so lame.
but now im starting to relate to his sound and personality. i think imma leave funk, thumb technique and all that. and focus on fingering, and go with the john myung direction. and after trying the dark eternal night, wtf! it's freaking hard as hell. sure it's not as showy as it looks, but some parts are fast as hell, and the piece is freaking huge!!!
All the idiots saying this isn't groovy need to learn tone terminoligy:
Groovy = Smooth
Gnarly = Coarse
A groove is a smooth, trancelike song. This is, by all means, smooth and trancelike. Myung's rhythms are flawless, his harmonies are beautiful, and his energy is relaxed. Learn to appreciate the art of music before claiming to be a musician. And for the record, this isn't out of his element; he's a Light Jazz/Classical Bassist who joined a Prog Metal band.
I understand everyone that has said this song is not "groovy" enough, I first listened to it some time ago and thought it was boring as hell, but some days ago I listened to it again and now I can't stop hitting the play button over and over. Of course it's not the most difficult song, but I think part of Myung's genius is to take something simple and create such a beautiful song
I dont know why I even bother reading comments about musical content here on youtube. If yah don't like the music then why don't you just crap your pants in frustration.
im a bassist and id give this song probably a 5 or 6 out of 10. Definitely not that complex or difficult, but it doesn't have to be to sound good. It is lacking in the groove but john Myung doesn't play groovy stuff, and for being out of his genre it sounds decent. myung is a pretty good bassist, wouldn't say amazing, but this certainly isn't one of his more difficult songs
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
is it just me...but as John Myung is the bassist for Dream Theater...who are dog shit, i mean really shit. Why the fuck does this song have the word 'groove' in it....it lacks groove...Bootys Collins is groovy, if this is what shredders consider grooovey then i feel sorry for shredders, and technical player lovers...if that is inspiring someone...then i cant imagine them having any creativity..
@MetallHead9 I dont know if they are mad bass skills, however, i play a guitar, not bass...so maybe its just a bassist thing but literally. that wasnt groovey...is all I was saying. but its called Solar GROOVE..i dont admire his skills. not there...as thats really simple i cant imagine a half decent bassist having trouble with that...
John is my major inspiration in bass. i have played for almost 9 years now and have finally gotten a 5 stringed bass. i play dream theater songs all the time with it and when i get enough money im gonna buy a 6 string and play even more bass songs that require that high C-string
Anyone know the tuning on his bass? The 6th string looks a little too thick to be a B-string… or maybe I'm just too thick-headed to tell…

is it just me...but as John Myung is the bassist for Dream Theater...who are dog shit, i mean really shit.
