@rageRATS Someone else uploaded this same video, and in that video Ledward says in the beginning that it is in standard tuning. If you search "Ledward Kaapana" it is the first result
I met and played bass for uncle Ledward at a backyard party in Ewa Beach at Lei's house. Not only is he a fantastic musician he is truly a nice person who does play with emotion. Very nice person!
@TyKimRace yeah i met him a couple times too, unfortunately only to mix his audio both times. but yeah he is super cool and definitely doesn't get the recognition he deserves... most musicians get very frustrated at that but it just doesn't seem to faze him whatsoever.
@turtlesoup7 It's interesting that you say that. I suppose a musician would get really upset when they dont get recognized if they've only gotten really skilled at something in order to gain recognition. If one's primary goal is to lift themselves up and be recognized, they are in music for the wrong reason I think. But hey, who am I to know.
@BoldRevelation i dunno, who are you? a musician? someone who knows a lot of musicians? all i know is i could walk down the street over here any given time, and ask people to sing a line from justin beaver cleaver and they could likely do it with no hesitation-- yet almost all of them probably wouldn't even know who mr. kaapana is. if you can afford to live in hawaii when your only true job is playing the guitar in front of tiny audiences then that's fine, but das Y hahd, brah.
Great musician and first class entertainer, from the time of Hui 'Ohana, with twin brother Ledward and cousin Dennis Pavao, all the way to this day! Anyone interested in this great artist must listen carefully the incredible, single take improv entitled "Highway to Hana" on the "Black Sand" CD! Incredible falseto singer and slack key artist who picks with two fingers! Thanks for this video, as it reflects so well Led's character! Just go online and buy his CDs! (I get nothing for this pitch!)
anybody know the name of this piece?

@kehau916: the tuning for this song is standard.
during some of led's shows he tells the story about his uncle freddy playing slack key in standard tuning.

Too riffy, no melody. Too flashy, not enough spirit. IMHO.

@banjoleper behave, there's plenty of melody!

I love that style of slack key. Is this is Mauna Loa tuning, Old Mauna Loa tuning, or some other?

Noone brings mental visuals of the old school Hawai'ian lifestyle like Uncle Led. He is the embodiment of slack key.
