My sister and I sang this in bars when we were 7& 8 old...dressed in blue of course. Wouldn't it be great to influence a a current artist to redo...no coywrights from what I hear.
Sorry, thats "Sinister Street" by Compton Mackenzie, in the Chapter "Quadruple Intrigue". The song was supposedly sung by Sylvia Scarlett but this wasn't stated in the book. Anyway, if you like this song, you'll love these books. Promise!
One of my favourites too, from my Granddad's record collection I used to play as a kid. This song was a favourite of Seaside Pierrot shows around 1900. Mentioned in "Sylvia Scarlett" by Compton Mackenzie, a book that really gives the atmosphere of this period.
My mother is almost 100 years old. Born in 1911. I've never heard this song but today in the nursing home she sang it to me...says she learned it when just a small child and the words came back to her in a dream. I had to google it. Wow!
My Grandmother used to sing this plus The Baggage Coach Ahead, Break The News To Mother, My Mother Was A Lady, After The Ball and all the songs of The Gay Nineties. Thank you.
My mum sang it to me and her mum sang it to her! And since I'm now a senior citizen, we're talking nearly a century ago! Why is it that some songs get used as lullabies? This, and My Grandfather's Clock always will hold a special place won't they!
I know this song from my childhood .My Mother who never stopped singing, use to sing this to my sister and me that is at least 55 yrs ago it was wonderful to hear it again, thank you very much for giving me this opportunity to hear it.
I cant belive you have a copy of this record. It was a favorite song of an Aunt of mine and would often sing it to me when I was little. Never thought I would ever hear this. Thank you.
