I can safely say I never saw Ali laugh and smile so much on TV then when Cossell was interviewing him. The verbal jawing back and forth was priceless and had everyone rolling, what a team those two were.
@blutobelushi Thanks for your respect. I do understand the affects of alcoholism. But understand too that many people who drink heavily are not bitter. What alcohol does do is that it worsens or enhances an already existing "predisposition". Many of his colleagues would describe him as a cantankerous old man with a very gifted verbosity, but cantankerous nonetheless. Many also described him as a loving, humble man.
@blutobelushi The turning point in his life appeared to be that he was brought down by the loss of his wife. He discussed this and you could easily see how he was changed man as a result, thus his drinking increased. Frank Deford (sports writer and colleague) said that he did an awful transformation after the death of Emmy. So his dying "bitter" is not an accurate account of this man, nor is it an appropriate way to characterize someone grieving from the loss of a loved one.
@jujumediazone superb post.superb..thats it.his daughters affirmed this.when Emmy died Howard died inside.i wish i could interact with more good people on here like you.happy holidays.
@publicatdamagnificen Many said when he lost his wife, he became bitter. But he was always a hard nose that some may interpret as "bitter". People don't really understand people. Being "bitter" is relative. Someone who doesn't like kittens might be considered bitter but unlike someone who doesn't like snakes, for instance.
By far the best to ever live. He told the truth and nothing but the truth Their is nobody like him today or ever will be again. His only flaw was he wanted to be bigger and better than himself he was never satisfied with his own success This consumed him to the point that he became self - destructive
We don't have sports announcers like that anymore and we never will.
I like how they said he was bitter toward the end of his life. Did they know that he lost his wife around that time which changed his life as it would for anyone who's been married for a long time. Duh...
Had Cossell been in his prime today, with cable channels and the internet, he would have been able to expand upon his duties and gotten inton commentary, much like MSNBC's Keith Olbermann.
Every sports reporter from ESPN, CNN, ABC,etc owes a debt of gratitude to Howard Cosell. Beside his announcing, his lasting legacy will be the news show "SportsBeat", the precursor to show like "The Sports Reporters" and HBO's "Real Sports". He pioneered sports journalism; love him or hate him he was a broadcasting giant and an original.
1) Never having gotten a shot at doing straight news 2) Working with beloved yet simple minded jocks like Frank Gifford while a lot of people found the quasi-intellectual Cosell annoying 3) Having to go to Roone Arledge whenever he wanted something 4) Howard was born bitter and sarcastic, otherwise he would not have been so great a personality and sportscaster.
@willieraye Monday Night Football did an Anniversary tribute and left Howard out of the program all together. That crushed him. Football had transplanted Baseball as America's past time in part due to the popularity of MNF. Howard WAS MNF and as a result, after leaving MNF and retiring from boxing reporting and broadcasting along with his wife's death, it is thought Howard let him self pass on.
I miss the man and what a show he could put on I'm glad that I had a chance to follow him back in the day. Thanks for all the fun and RIP Howard!

@publicatdamagnificen alcoholism.

@blutobelushi alcoholism doesn't cause you to become bitter, it's usually used what some think is an antidote.
