this is the hardest thing I've ever tried!..it's harder than any other school project I've done! but don't worry Jason! I won't quit! you're my inspiration!
@buepo7 Umm the reason Jason didn't seem Super clean is because he generally played shit that noone else could have played at all. He could have played every single non-ridiculous bit of guitaring that anyone else was playing ( except for shawn lane) very very cleanly. There was a chopin piece (i believe) that Yngwie said was physically impossible to play on guitar. 18 year old Jason learnt it in a few days.
@BabylonWhore666 When you listen to a solo (in this case 40 seconds of a song) you dont judge the mans musical ability without listening to where the solo came from.
@andrewkeen24 You are talking shit. It sounds awful. Simple fact.
If you want to go off on a tangent about some other crap like his musical ability and whatever else moronic dribble you have to offer, then save it for your group meetings where you can share your ramblings with other no-minded people who actually GIVE A SHIT.
To the people saying it's the tape degrading the quality, it's not. Jason Becker was an amazing guitarist, but he wasn't exactly a clean player. The video of him playing Paganini's 5th Caprice is an excellent example.
No one could top him back in the day, and they'd be hard pressed to even now, but he wasn't the cleanest player.
@Captchaos3000 he actually plays it perfect, its the tone that makes it sound sloppy.....he has other videos on youtube playing without any distortion at all and every single note is clean, its amazing
@Captchaos3000 ??????? ehhh no, thats not irrelevant at all, when you try sweeping on clean, it shows every little mistake you make.....he does it perfect, watch the carvin guitar presentations he does.
@westjt17 I don't know why you think that, but it's completely wrong. It is harder to play cleanly with distortion, no matter what you're doing. Sweeping on a clean tone in no way shows every little mistake you make.
@Captchaos3000 alright well every person ive ever heard from (including me) thinks its harder to play technically difficult and fast things on clean than with distorion........try this, learn some yngwie stuff, try playing it full speed on the clean channel and see how it sounds
@westjt17 It depends what you consider to be "more difficult."
In a linear scale run it's easy to use distortion to cover up flaws in technique. Or, easier to blame the distortion for sounds you caused.
Sweeping, on the other hand, is more difficult to play with distortion because it requires muting each string after it is played. Distortion adds noise. Removing noise in sweeping is difficult. Therefore, distortion in sweeping is difficult.
@Captchaos3000 sorry but atually distortion will help your legato a lot wich makes your sweeping less sloppy since you dont have to pick each note with the same precision. even when sweeping distortion will cover your mistakes and will create the ilusion that u're playing flawless.
@tasfa10 Sweeping is not legato, not at all. Every note is picked, but the picking is not the difficult part. The difficulty comes from muting, which distortion makes more difficult. Distortion will help cover your mistakes in legato playing, but sweeping is not legato.
@Captchaos3000 -.- i know the difference between sweeping and legato. just saying you can sweep like you were doing a legato: you dont pick every note and distortion will cover that and you'll only or sometimes just hammer on the arpeggio notes (in this case we're talking about arpeggios). itll sound the same or at least if you're not comparing you wont notice a difference. watch "Overthrown intro (Arsis - We are the Nightmare)" to see what im talking about. after each tapping section he sweeps
@tasfa10 That's not a conventional sweeping technique, and it would take a ton of distortion (or a situation that allowed for extreme finger leverage, such as two handed tapping) to make it feasible to do instead of conventional sweep picking. It's safe to assume that Jason does not use that technique every time he sweeps, so it is safe to say it is more difficult for Jason to sweep on distortion. Conventional sweeping is more difficult with distortion, just like hybrid picking.
@Captchaos3000 yh, of course jason has a very good technique. i was just sayin theres a way distortion will cover ur inability to sweep properly (and it doesnt take that much distortion). anyway jason's awesome and i just hope someday at least some of us can sweep like he did! o.o
@tasfa10 Dude the proper definition of sweep picking involves hammering on any second note on one string. That means that you do not pick every note, otherwise it isn't called sweep picking.
@andrewkeen24 Sweep picking is a guitar playing technique in which a 'sweeping' motion of the pick is combined with a matching fret hand technique in order to produce a specific series of notes which are fast and fluid in sound. -Wikipedia
This technique involves hitting several consecutive strings with a downward or upward motion. Contrary to alternate picking, strings are hit in a single direction. -Guitar Lessons in Seconds
I've scoured the internet, and cannot find your definition anywhere
@Captchaos3000 Sweep picking, alternate picking, legato, 8 finger tapping etc. These are all very different techniques. Sweeppicking SPECIFICALLY involves NOT picking every note. There are people who do pick every note and call it sweepicking but technically that is incorrect. You are talking about combing alternate picking with sweep picking.
@andrewkeen24 Can you provide a reference for the claim that sweep picking was originally legato? To me, the claim doesn't make sense. Legato is simply playing without articulation. Sweep *picking* is a *picking* technique. Instances of sweeping before the late 80s are few and far between, and the few that I have seen are all picked. Your definition, if it exists, is long, long outdated, and not relevant in any sense.
And there are a vast number of players who can sweep more cleanly than Becker
@Captchaos3000 Sorry I guess i was being a bit rash. People have been picking notes in their sweep picks for so long that it is considered normal sweep picking at this point. The original idea was to play all extra notes via legato.
@andrewkeen24 Can you give me evidence to suggest that this was the original intent of sweep picking, and that the technique was actually called "sweep picking," and did not have a different name at the time?
@Captchaos3000 Look up the evidence yourself. Frank Gambale is the first known sweep picker and its been called sweep picking since he did it. He did it in the way that i've described.
@andrewkeen24 No, he didn't. His method, which he called "speed picking," is what we now know as economy picking. I'll let you look up economy picking. He explains this, very clearly, in his book, Speed Picking.
It's hilarious that you say I know nothing, when you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.
@Captchaos3000 Do you not understand what I've been saying to you? Economy picking was the first technique I learned. Stop bringing up the most basic shit that you know to do with guitaring to sound like you know your shit because ANYONE could tell me about economy picking or speed picking.
@andrewkeen24 Can you give me evidence to suggest that this was the original intent of sweep picking, and that the technique was actually called "sweep picking," and did not have a different name at the time?
@Captchaos3000 ahh i get wat you're sayin now......i dnt mute each string, but as soon as i hit the note i remove my finger......for me it made sweeping easier, if you ever have any trouble sweeping you could try it, it might take some time though
@Captchaos3000 i know, but for me it was easier bc i always had a hard time palm muting and trying to sweep for some reason.....it took a while but we are at an understanding
@Captchaos3000 True in some sense and not in others. The point is sweep picking itself is so innacurate that its impossible to sweep anything cleanly at all. Please show me anyone who can play the serrana arpeggios properly. I doubt there's anyone. You have to understand the specific difficulty of these specific sweep picks. Also anyone playing more physically advanced than this was generally much older, except for shawn lane who dominates all and Anton Oparin who is like a robot of a kid haha.
@Captchaos3000 Think about this now guy. I was impressed with crossroads years ago when I started playing guitar. Ive gone through hundreds of phases since then. It's 2011 and you're still telling me about crossroads? You've got a long way to go. I stopped liking steve vai years ago. He can play guitar well of course though.
@Captchaos3000 And most of the guitar work was Ry Cooder or alot of it was so you have no idea what you're talking about. The 5th caprice was of course Steve and not Ry Cooder.
@Captchaos3000 Vai could never play the 5th caprice anyway so you repeatedly prove that you know fuck all. That piece is called Eugene's Bag of Tricks which is an adaption of the 5th caprice.
@andrewkeen24 *Sigh* It doesn't matter. His version on the 5th caprice was dirty in sections that could certainly be played cleanly. My point was that it COULD HAVE BEEN cleaner. Likewise, I never said Serrana was easy, but there are sections the he COULD HAVE played cleaner, as there are in most of his studio recordings.
Stop building a straw man. I never claimed he was a bad guitar player. He was a brilliant guitar player, certainly one of the best. But his work was not cleanly played.
ARPEGGIOS: Interesting thing I've noticed that I thought I'd share: If you look at closely he anchors the pinky to mute, but most of his sweep motion is from wrist action. Why point this out? Well here's the contradicting thing most people say about arpeggios: "It's like your playing a chord in slow motion!"or "It's the arm's raking motion"- obviously you don't play chords with a lot of arm it's in the wrist like Jason's arps. Do what's comfortable, but Jason seems to use more wrist.
i have no clue what you guys are arguing about but that last comment made me lol. But seriously Jason wouldn't want people to argue about stupid shit, he'd be mad that you have the ability to move and your wasting it by foolishly bickering. Plus Jason is busy getting laid; I still can't get over that. 40 yr old guy, 99% paralyzed and he gets more pussy than me... that's how you know he is a legend. \w/
@MuhammadSweepmez - Boy, what a child you are. Always have to get the last word, huh? Clearly, you are an immutable, ignominious little reprobate who is an embarrassment and disgrace. Your parents must be ashamed of themselves.
Nah bro, Have you spoken with Jason? Been on his forums? I have! The dude still gets laid and his girlfriend is here on youtube (Username: SingingSexCoach). He's pretty open about it so you can look it up or ask him yourself, he has full sensation, he can feel everything he just can't use his muscles. Check his GF's channel, there are some great vid of his birthday party there.

However, despite the fact that Jason Becker was not so clean in his playing, he had achieved an enviable level having only 20 years.
buepo7 7 months ago 3
@buepo7 Umm the reason Jason didn't seem Super clean is because he generally played shit that noone else could have played at all. He could have played every single non-ridiculous bit of guitaring that anyone else was playing ( except for shawn lane) very very cleanly. There was a chopin piece (i believe) that Yngwie said was physically impossible to play on guitar. 18 year old Jason learnt it in a few days.

@BabylonWhore666 When you listen to a solo (in this case 40 seconds of a song) you dont judge the mans musical ability without listening to where the solo came from.
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@andrewkeen24 You are talking shit. It sounds awful. Simple fact.
If you want to go off on a tangent about some other crap like his musical ability and whatever else moronic dribble you have to offer, then save it for your group meetings where you can share your ramblings with other no-minded people who actually GIVE A SHIT.
Cunt.

HardcoreScreamo45 7 months ago
To the people saying it's the tape degrading the quality, it's not. Jason Becker was an amazing guitarist, but he wasn't exactly a clean player. The video of him playing Paganini's 5th Caprice is an excellent example.
No one could top him back in the day, and they'd be hard pressed to even now, but he wasn't the cleanest player.
Captchaos3000 7 months ago
@Captchaos3000 Lol try to play this cleanly
GoH4bsGo 7 months ago
@GoH4bsGo I never said I could play this cleanly, but modern guitarists have played equally complex stuff much more cleanly than he plays this.
An irrelevant, knee-jerk reaction will not prove my point wrong.
Captchaos3000 7 months ago
@Captchaos3000 he actually plays it perfect, its the tone that makes it sound sloppy.....he has other videos on youtube playing without any distortion at all and every single note is clean, its amazing
westjt17 7 months ago
@westjt17 That's irrelevant. It would obviously be easier to play cleanly with no distortion.
Captchaos3000 7 months ago
@Captchaos3000 ??????? ehhh no, thats not irrelevant at all, when you try sweeping on clean, it shows every little mistake you make.....he does it perfect, watch the carvin guitar presentations he does.
westjt17 7 months ago
@westjt17 I don't know why you think that, but it's completely wrong. It is harder to play cleanly with distortion, no matter what you're doing. Sweeping on a clean tone in no way shows every little mistake you make.
Captchaos3000 7 months ago
@Captchaos3000 alright well every person ive ever heard from (including me) thinks its harder to play technically difficult and fast things on clean than with distorion........try this, learn some yngwie stuff, try playing it full speed on the clean channel and see how it sounds
westjt17 7 months ago
@westjt17 It depends what you consider to be "more difficult."
In a linear scale run it's easy to use distortion to cover up flaws in technique. Or, easier to blame the distortion for sounds you caused.
Sweeping, on the other hand, is more difficult to play with distortion because it requires muting each string after it is played. Distortion adds noise. Removing noise in sweeping is difficult. Therefore, distortion in sweeping is difficult.
Captchaos3000 7 months ago
@Captchaos3000 sorry but atually distortion will help your legato a lot wich makes your sweeping less sloppy since you dont have to pick each note with the same precision. even when sweeping distortion will cover your mistakes and will create the ilusion that u're playing flawless.
tasfa10 7 months ago
@tasfa10 Sweeping is not legato, not at all. Every note is picked, but the picking is not the difficult part. The difficulty comes from muting, which distortion makes more difficult. Distortion will help cover your mistakes in legato playing, but sweeping is not legato.
Once more for emphasis, sweeping is not legato.
Captchaos3000 7 months ago
@Captchaos3000 -.- i know the difference between sweeping and legato. just saying you can sweep like you were doing a legato: you dont pick every note and distortion will cover that and you'll only or sometimes just hammer on the arpeggio notes (in this case we're talking about arpeggios). itll sound the same or at least if you're not comparing you wont notice a difference. watch "Overthrown intro (Arsis - We are the Nightmare)" to see what im talking about. after each tapping section he sweeps
tasfa10 7 months ago
@tasfa10 That's not a conventional sweeping technique, and it would take a ton of distortion (or a situation that allowed for extreme finger leverage, such as two handed tapping) to make it feasible to do instead of conventional sweep picking. It's safe to assume that Jason does not use that technique every time he sweeps, so it is safe to say it is more difficult for Jason to sweep on distortion. Conventional sweeping is more difficult with distortion, just like hybrid picking.
Captchaos3000 7 months ago
@Captchaos3000 yh, of course jason has a very good technique. i was just sayin theres a way distortion will cover ur inability to sweep properly (and it doesnt take that much distortion). anyway jason's awesome and i just hope someday at least some of us can sweep like he did! o.o
tasfa10 7 months ago
@tasfa10 Dude the proper definition of sweep picking involves hammering on any second note on one string. That means that you do not pick every note, otherwise it isn't called sweep picking.
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@andrewkeen24 Sweep picking is a guitar playing technique in which a 'sweeping' motion of the pick is combined with a matching fret hand technique in order to produce a specific series of notes which are fast and fluid in sound. -Wikipedia
This technique involves hitting several consecutive strings with a downward or upward motion. Contrary to alternate picking, strings are hit in a single direction. -Guitar Lessons in Seconds
I've scoured the internet, and cannot find your definition anywhere
Captchaos3000 5 months ago
@tasfa10 Thats very VERY basic sweepicking technique i'm teaching you lol.
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@Captchaos3000 Sweep picking, alternate picking, legato, 8 finger tapping etc. These are all very different techniques. Sweeppicking SPECIFICALLY involves NOT picking every note. There are people who do pick every note and call it sweepicking but technically that is incorrect. You are talking about combing alternate picking with sweep picking.
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@andrewkeen24 Can you provide a reference for the claim that sweep picking was originally legato? To me, the claim doesn't make sense. Legato is simply playing without articulation. Sweep *picking* is a *picking* technique. Instances of sweeping before the late 80s are few and far between, and the few that I have seen are all picked. Your definition, if it exists, is long, long outdated, and not relevant in any sense.
And there are a vast number of players who can sweep more cleanly than Becker
Captchaos3000 5 months ago
@Captchaos3000 Sorry I guess i was being a bit rash. People have been picking notes in their sweep picks for so long that it is considered normal sweep picking at this point. The original idea was to play all extra notes via legato.
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@andrewkeen24 Can you give me evidence to suggest that this was the original intent of sweep picking, and that the technique was actually called "sweep picking," and did not have a different name at the time?
Captchaos3000 5 months ago
@Captchaos3000 Look up the evidence yourself. Frank Gambale is the first known sweep picker and its been called sweep picking since he did it. He did it in the way that i've described.
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@andrewkeen24 No, he didn't. His method, which he called "speed picking," is what we now know as economy picking. I'll let you look up economy picking. He explains this, very clearly, in his book, Speed Picking.
It's hilarious that you say I know nothing, when you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.
Captchaos3000 5 months ago
@Captchaos3000 Do you not understand what I've been saying to you? Economy picking was the first technique I learned. Stop bringing up the most basic shit that you know to do with guitaring to sound like you know your shit because ANYONE could tell me about economy picking or speed picking.
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@andrewkeen24 You've stopped making sense. You told me Frank Gambale pioneered sweeping, and that he swept by hammering on all the notes.
I gave you information out of his book that disproves your point. Your reply makes no sense, whatsoever, in the context of this discussion.

Captchaos3000 5 months ago
@Captchaos3000 ahh i get wat you're sayin now......i dnt mute each string, but as soon as i hit the note i remove my finger......for me it made sweeping easier, if you ever have any trouble sweeping you could try it, it might take some time though
westjt17 7 months ago
@westjt17 It's the same thing, you're muting the string by lifting your finger.
Captchaos3000 7 months ago
@Captchaos3000 i know, but for me it was easier bc i always had a hard time palm muting and trying to sweep for some reason.....it took a while but we are at an understanding
westjt17 7 months ago
@Captchaos3000 True in some sense and not in others. The point is sweep picking itself is so innacurate that its impossible to sweep anything cleanly at all. Please show me anyone who can play the serrana arpeggios properly. I doubt there's anyone. You have to understand the specific difficulty of these specific sweep picks. Also anyone playing more physically advanced than this was generally much older, except for shawn lane who dominates all and Anton Oparin who is like a robot of a kid haha.
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@andrewkeen24 You felt the need to reply to four of my comments separately, so I'll return the favor.
It doesn't matter if these sweeps are more or less difficult than any other sweeps, that wasn't my point.
My point is, these sweeps are not clean. I spotted three obvious mistakes, which I could point out to you if you like.
And no, it is not impossible to sweep things cleanly, scores of guitarists sweep cleanly all the time.
Do not preach that which is not true. These sweeps are dirty.
Captchaos3000 5 months ago
@Captchaos3000 who needs to be the cleanest player? if you can play like that
enematrocoya 6 months ago
@Captchaos3000 Your examples aren't great because have you ever seen anyone play the 5th Caprice cleanly on a guitar?
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@andrewkeen24 Crossroads, the movie. Look it up, all the guitar work was Steve Vai, very early in his career.
In case you don't, he plays the 5th caprice, note for note.
Captchaos3000 5 months ago
@Captchaos3000 Think about this now guy. I was impressed with crossroads years ago when I started playing guitar. Ive gone through hundreds of phases since then. It's 2011 and you're still telling me about crossroads? You've got a long way to go. I stopped liking steve vai years ago. He can play guitar well of course though.
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@Captchaos3000 And most of the guitar work was Ry Cooder or alot of it was so you have no idea what you're talking about. The 5th caprice was of course Steve and not Ry Cooder.
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@Captchaos3000 Do you know how easily Becker would have played that 5th caprice?
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
@Captchaos3000 Vai could never play the 5th caprice anyway so you repeatedly prove that you know fuck all. That piece is called Eugene's Bag of Tricks which is an adaption of the 5th caprice.
andrewkeen24 5 months ago
