  • This song was written by Gerry Marsden of the British group Gerry and the Pacemakers (circa 1963), becoming their first and biggest U.S. hit. I never cease to be amazed by how many people give credit to an artist today not knowing that "this new tune" is actually several decades, not an original by their favorite artist. There is very little "new" under the sun anymore. Not to disparage a great artist or their ability to move people by performing a cover, realize where the true credit lies.

  • @RondoRedux

Not sure who you are talking to, but note the information and tags under the video.

  • Umm... was that person serious, saying that this was a cover? It's not...

  • I spend most of my time on Utube spreading hatred and racism. Rickie Lee Jones takes me away from all of that. She is a brilliant artist who cannot be copied; please keep your renditions to yourself. Singing a cover is like legally stealing art. You can't come close to her, so why bother posting your pitiful "version" of her music? Please keep your fake sensitivity and your acoustic guitar to yourself. Post one of her songs instead. I love you, Rickie.

  • @HumongousJohnson

    What? This is a cover.

  • @HumongousJohnson

Are you saying this is not Rickie? Are you high?

  • @RockAndFunk Yes, I am.

  • @RockAndFunk I believe what RockAndFunk is saying is that Rickie's "version" is a cover of someone else's original song . . . .

  • @cj92it

I assumed everyone (or the vast majority) of people choosing to watch/listen to this video would know this is a cover, and I think they do. Yes by "version" I mean not the original. Under "tags" I have "Gerry And The Pacemakers". There is no replacing the original, but I thought she did a very unique and cool job with this song.

  • It's a beautiful version. But no one will ever surpass Gerry and The Pacemaker's haunting evocative melancholy bruising string-arranged orchestrated song about a tramp and lost love.

  • my soul was touched

  • rickie got me thru my first heartbrake, always loved and respected her

  • i seldom like remakes better than originals but WOW! this is tremendous.

  • great version of this song ..thanks

  • I have never heard this versin before,,,its just great,, but then again,, how can it not be, when its Rickie Lee Jones,,, that voice gets me every single time... I have always loved her music and voice,,, thanks for sharing.. I´m going out tomorrow to be Flying Cowboys..

  • @JazzyMagician

    No problem :)

  • Love it!

  • Rickie lee was cool with Ukies and native Americans.

  • Beautiful lyric.

  • I really don't like the original of this song ... But Rickie put another dimension to it.

The instrumentation + the new harmonics ... made it an entirely new song for me.

Sorry, this to me is Rickie's song.

    ciao.

  • I have never heard this, though I am a huge fan of Ricky Lee. This is so beautiful, thanks so much for posting!

  • @1979bex

No you can't, and I'm not a big fan of covers, but this is a very unique and pretty version of the original.

  • I don't have this version???? I have back ground vocals and no sax on my CD....

  • @jacob95124

Are you talking about the full album? Interesting, I have that, but I took the song for this vid off the CD single.

  • I love you Mrs. Jones thank you so very much, for just being you..

  • I agree with you "anyshitt", she is a superstar talant that never got the fame or recognition.that she deserved....i still love "the horses" so sexy, so horny. I saw a video once of Ricki performing it live.........incredible. I have quite a few LP's and CDs of RLJ so I will see what I can do to get them up and running s others can enjoy....

  • @starshine6060

  • @anyshift

I can relate to your crying to the old tunes you find on here. I do the same thing, but reading your post made me so sad for you.....

  • @kitten3535 what a human thing to say? thank you for the sentiment.

  • such a great tune. i transfer it to all suffering in life beyond relationships

  • real artist and smooth music as it should be...

  • shes always unusual

  • This is my all-time favorite RLJ tune!

I remember the days when it was on

the radio waves. I wonder if there ever

was a video made with this song being

    sung by her??

Thanks so much for posting it!

  • There might have been a video made, but I'm not certain.

    You're welcome :)

  • she floors me every time. i humbly submit myself to whatever she wants.. ---tom c

  • Top shelf! Rickie has done a superb job here!

  • I'm sure this cover would get the Gerry (and Fred) Marsden seal of approval.

  • it's so odd. I only started browsing u-tube

about a month ago. Now all I do is search out and listen to, songs that I have not heard in years.. I cant believe other people

have been touched by the same music that move's inside of me as well. i have been crying for a few minutes now and

I have to get it together..PS find coolsville

  • @anyshitt You have to hear Jose Feliciano. I cannot hear that and not bawl like a baby. Good thing there is no one home most times.

  • @Bluesdirections yea Jose is super smooth... good call! thank you..

  • @anyshitt Check out Joe Cocker's version.

  • @Bluesdirections Hard to find but check out the Trini Lopez version.

  • @xyz228 I will.

  • @anyshitt

Yeah it had the same effect on me too... music has a way of doing that.

It taps right into your soul and exposes it like a raw fruit with the skin ripped off!

It's good though in a way cos it lets you know you're Human!

  • @srut thank you!

  • Yes it's on CD :)

  • I hate asking, but can you post "Rodeo Girl" from this cd. I had it but I gave it to the local library, not because I dont love it but because I wanted to share Rickie with others.

  • That was nice of you.

I actually took this from a cd single, but I'm sure I have the entire cd, I just need to find it, I'll let you know when I do.

  • If you can't all is well, really might need to grab myself another copy so I can play it full boar lol ..Thankyou so.

    Rlj is a blessing.

  • Thanks so much for posting this great song. This was always one of my favorite albums. I still have it on vinyl! I love this one and My Funny Valentine from it. Do you know if it was ever released on disc?

  • @ChiDanlP As the proud possessor of every RLJ album ever released I can confirm that this beautiful version can be found on her Flying Cowboys album. Have a listen, if you all can, to her live version of Flying Cowboys on her Naked Songs album. I've nearly worn a hole in that particular part of the disc...Forever on rotation!?
