The student's weren't preventing cops from doing this (you can see in the video that the police are on both sides of the line, so obviously they could get by). The police just didn't like them there, and decided to punish them for it. Since when were the police empowered to dispense summary corporal punishment?

I think people are being too hard on the UC Davis Chancellor. She has to do what is necessary to maintain order on her campus. Those 20 protesting students were told to leave and when they refused they faced the consequences. Yes, part of our American history is civil disobedience, but there is usually a price to pay for the civil disobedience. So if we're gonna protest, we have to be willing to accept the possible consequences for having done so.

@heyitslo741 Yeah, the media has been pretty awful. Even "left-wing" NPR refers to every incidence of police on protester violence as "protesters clashing with the police." The implication is always that the protesters were actively fighting with the police. Wealthy people are not happy about OWS, and the media depends upon wealthy individuals/corporations for funding/ad revenue. Unfortunately, it's looking like the negative media presentation has been pretty successful.

I mean.. The students were ignoring the enforcers of the law. Its not like the police open fired on them.. and to pick them up and try and make them move would have started a massive fist fight.
They can't just leave them there... you can't get special treatment within the law.
Pepper spray was the least harmful solution. If you're going to ignore the law, expect consequences you know? They should be happy they sent out a message with the risks they took.

@alliswim2010 Nope, the police were ordered to remove tents, not to disperse a crowd, arrest anyone, or anything like that (at least that's what Katehi is saying). The student's weren't preventing cops from doing this (you can see in the video that the police are on both sides of the line, so obviously they could get by). The police just didn't like them there, and decided to punish them for it. Since when were the police empowered to dispense summary corporal punishment?

Laws are never perfect, so there will normally be too much, or too little force allowed. I happen to believe that if someone is sitting in a park, "pepper spray to the face" is "too much". It has nothing, at all, about avoiding consequences, and everything to do with civil rights. So shove that reactionary accusation up your ass.

I think people are being too hard on the UC Davis Chancellor. She has to do what is necessary to maintain order on her campus. Those 20 protesting students were told to leave and when they refused they faced the consequences. Yes, part of our American history is civil disobedience, but there is usually a price to pay for the civil disobedience. So if we're gonna protest, we have to be willing to accept the possible consequences for having done so.
