Me like ALCO, my railroad has 2 of them in running condition, both are ex. US Army and US Airforce RSD1 locomotives with 1000 horsepower. One of them can be seen briefly in this video here, #8669 from the Tennessee Valley Railroad. The other is off site and it's number is #8677.
Mostly all locomotives "Smoke". Alco's are famous for their excessive amount of smoke to be exerted from the engine. It's just the way they were built.
Well they were used clear through and up till now. Mostly on regional/shortline railroads. They were the most reliable locomotive of their time, until they were out-preformed by the EMD & GE locomotives.
yeah, Harvey . . . the 40 Class all came out of the Montreal Locomotive works and were fairly standard Alco product - except the side walkway rails were removed, and they were all fitted with buffing beams (much of our rolling stock them still had buffers!) Oh, and the cabs were shaved off towards the top of their sides to allow them to clear our tunnels. It's a tribute to them that they literally worked themselves to death . . .
@gregrudd Cd not agree more Greg! Although, I have a real soft spot for the British Deltic - what a loco!! But when it comes to loco development, I have to raise a glass to the Yanks . . . Theirs is the science of developing machines that can move the greatest mountains of shit from one place to another - as efficiently as possible!
This is a great series - we have all 3 of them and they are surperb, can recomend them. The music is only during intro; in the actual footage you can hear the ALCo's at their best ;)
suck. Squeeze. Bang Blow! What Alcos do best! The NSW Government Railways had a love affair with Alcos from the mid 50s - and many so-called 'branchline' 48 Class locos still roar the tracks.
Perhaps the video(s) have an option to not play the music soundtrack. Alco sounds by themselves are wonderful. Some might like the music, but others might like just the Alco sound.
Regardless of the quality of the music, I prefer to hear the locomotives. The same with all car videos etc. - why do you people want to ruin it with music? I'm guessing the majority of people like it that way, or it wouldn't be there, but...
I'm shocked they didn't show any alcos from the Delaware Lackawanna/Gennesee valley company. I live 10 minutes from it and the whole railroad is many differnet kinds of alcos.
They did. The Green and Yellow "Central Vermont" paint scheme on the RS-11 shoving on the hoppers is actually a GVT locomotive on the DLWR in what appeared to the the Depew to Lancaster operation. You'll notice the CV has been repainted into a GV on the side of the locomotive.
My exact thoughts. That stupid soundtrack blocks too much of the sound. What better music than the sound of ALCos? Maybe Pentrex did it on purpose so we'd buy the videos.
I ran WM 1689 (for a short distance) and also rode on B&O 800 on the now defunct Liberty Limited Dinner Train (Northern Central Ry.)in south central PA. I wish they could have come to New Freedom to film those units on that run.
