At the time the Afgan war was extremely unpopular in Russia. Russian 18 year old boys, who had to do the obligatory army service, dreaded to be sent to Afganistan and were unmotivated. It wasn't their war - they were sent "to help Afgan people" to get rid of what has now become talibans. It's ironic that now the US and British troops have to do the same job. I hope one day Afgan people grow into civilized society on their own, otherwise the history will keep repeating itself.
You have to read history of how the Taliban got started in the first place--in particular, who funded them. Then read about the strategic value of Afghanistan from the point-of-view of organized financial powers. Hint: TAPI.
