btw if George Lucas had released the movies in numerical order, they would never have been so successful. A New Hope was the most logical 1st release because it introduced us to all the pertinent characters and the storyline isn't boring (like Episodes 1 & 2).
I think I agree A New Hope is the most logical 1st release, but only because of how poorly written episodes 1 & 2 are. On the other hand, Anakin turning into Darth Vader without us knowing in advance that would happen could've gone down in movie history (if we cared about Anakin's character in the first place, of course). The way they were released, Episode 3 has some nice symbolism, but it appears pointless. Well, that's my opinion, I probably went too long.
I think it is amazing how in 1977, Lucas knew how he wanted the story to go. This is proved by the titled "A New Hope". Anakin had already turned to the darkside and Luke was the New Hope for the galaxy. Very impressive that he had the entire story mapped out in his mind decades before the prequels materialized.
@chefjaike I don't know to what extent he had the series mapped out, but he certainly had envisioned something greater than a single movie and must've had a story in his head about Anakin's past adventures. Though I'm sure he greatly modified that story multiple times, I still think it's impressive that he had such a vast imagination containing this fictional universe.
