Xena would not have been able to maintain the goodness in her heart if Gabby left her. There were many episodes that proved that point. The pure heart gabby had was a beacon to the goodness in Xena's own soul and it kept her from returning to her old ways.

Oh, poor Xena would co totally nuts if Gabby left her, really, cause the reason why xena didn't gave up was Gabby. And without Gabby there wouldn't be the Xena Warrior Princess serie. If it was Gabby who died in the last episode, it'd be horrible, but when it was Xena...Well, horrible, but best ending for this.

You also have to count when they went to the future. They did that afew times. Once Gabby thought she was an ancester of xena and then there was the one where they went to a past life phyic. I own the whole series.

First off canadian03 xena would be the conqueror of the known world without gabrielle cold, cruel, a monster. Sure in the beging it was like that but gabrielle grew into her own as a Bard, Amazon Queen, Warrior not metion the other half of Xena's soul.
