The best male vocal performance of all time. Hands down. The beautiful warbling, the melodious notes, the perfect harmony with the instrumentals make this the best performanceof all time. No crackling in the voice at all. Angels could not sing better.
Nobody does it like Michael Crawford. He took the Phantom role to a new level. For the movie the Phantom should have either been Howard McGillin or Tim Curry. That's my P.O.V.
Michael Crawford will always be the best phantom, his voice is just memorising. But I did love Ramin Karimloo on the 25th anniversary, he is amazing too
It's taking me forever just to write this comment because I can't collect my thoughts, but this song is so amazing, that it literally blew my mind. I forgot my name for a minute.
@Poet2916 in august i was the phantom in a production of the phantom of the opera and my girlfreind happened to be christine so i had to sing it to her :-)
I don't even like this show that much, but I love Michael Crawford. Maybe I'd like the show more if I saw him perform. Unfortunately, I wasn't born when he was playing the phantom.
they have not made a word yet to describe Micheal Crawford's voice. The word shall be Crawfordness. That's right. If you hear someone sing like this (highly doubt you will) they have Crawfordness. Or they sing Crawfordly.
I don't know how people prefer Gerard Butler. Micheal Crawford is...he's....beyond any words I know. He was made for the part of the Phantom. This song (especially sung by him) is just....*sighs happily*
gerard butler was rlly passionate and emotional in acting and singing, but nothing will ever beat this. Imagine Gerard phantom but this voice = perfect phantom
my dad would play this for my sisters and when I was little, and we'd see who could be the loudest at the "BE" part (dad won) and who could hold out the last note the longest (dad won xD) then other times, I'd be off by myself with a boombox (old school stereo) and I'd sit on the floor and sing through the entire song all alone. mind you, i was only 5 at the time, that's how much i love(d) this song :)

The Best Phantom ever!Michael Crawford is absolutely amazing. He has a voice that caresses the ears of anyone who listens. It is almost like he doesn't even try to sound as good as he does...the song just flows and blends so sweetly!absolute perfection is a sinlge song!Beautiful!!:]
I remember my sisters, my dad and I used to sing this when I was 5 or 6. So along with being a beautifully written song it's comforting and brings back memories. :)
I know Michael Crawford will always be my favorite phantom. <3
Or maybe each phantom has their own quirks and reasons to be appreciated, as well as their own fan base...? Or that every artist has something different to put on the table?
We all have our favorites and our opinions. I think Gerry did a decent job; not my first choice but still OK. No one can beat the original though, so Michael is my favorite phantom.
Well actually, I gues Lon Chaney is the original phantom...but Michael would still beat him, I'm sure.
God, THANK YOU. Most of the Phantom fans are so damn pushy and insisting these days. Can't we just all accept that maybe some people prefer one over the other? Preferably without shoving the whole "my Phantom is better" down each other's throats?
@KhemetnoYami: No, Michael did everything better than Gerard. The only song Gerard sang in tune was this one, and it still wasn't as good as Michael's.
@LerouxsPhantom The only phantom worse than GB was Paul Stanley. Don't get me wrong, Paul is insanely talented as a rock singer, guitarist, and songwriter, but he made a horrible phantom. It's just not his style of singing/performing.
@abugfilms my voice lesson teach is having me learn this song. and i would have to say it is definitely stretching me ha ha. :D Gotta love Andrew Loyd Webber. xD

This is, by far, the best version of this song . . . I can't believe it has been more than 20 years since I took my girlfriend to see this! Am I THAT old?!?!?
Exactly! It looked like a third degree sunburn at best. And I was thinking that without having to have his make up last through a 2 1/2 hour performance, that they could've done so much more with his make up. I was sorely disappointed!
I agree! Michael is perfection in this role! He set a standard that has never been reached by anybody else. Thank you Mike for a legendary performance that will never be forgotten!
Finally, someone with sense! I totally agree with you! Gerald Butler sounded like he had brain damage! He was so horrible, I cannot watch that movie. Now, to be fair, Crawford is on a level of his own above everyone else. But even with the open mind I used to tolerate a subpar Raoul and Christine, I actually felt jolts of horror at some of GB's rancid notes. I can't believe he got the part! Even Gilbert Gottfried would have been better:D Anyway, thanks for being sensible!:) XO, Katie
Gerard sounded like he had brain damage?! Oi KTJ, Fuck you bitch!!!
He wasn't THAT extreme!!
I do love both Michael and Gerard in Phantom! Gerard had that more rock and roll type since he had been in a rock band and that's the kind of style Andrew actually liked!
Michael had more experience in theatre and choir singing, so for whatever reason, Michael is a fantastic Phantom but Gerard didn't have theatrical training like Michael did, so give him a fucking break!!
You really need to calm down and get a life. It's my opinion and he sounded like he had brain damage. It was obvious he didn't have the training Michael Crawford has had - he sounded absolutely horrible. He needs to have had SOME training in order to take that part and he clearly did not. He was absolutely dreadful as the phantom. So calm down, get a life, and get some class. You have serious mental issues to become so irate over a youtube comment.

Yeah, Butler needed a bucket to carry a tune. But his acting of an angrier, more bitter phantom was pretty good, especially on the "down once more/lust for blood/pity comes too late parts of the Final Lair scene. His horrible singing took away from that, unfortunately. Also, he wasn't ugly enough under the mask to justify wearing it!
Michaels just the best period. He out acted and sang Butler by a mile(just my opinion after seeing Michael live and the film once). Karimloos not bad but he definetly has borrowed some of Michaels moves(no insult meant since all the stage Phantoms are following the basic blocking that MC and Hal Prince came up with) and I just enjoy the passion and movements of MC better. MCs voice is so smooth, powerful, seductive and sensual and has an eerie quality that sounds great for the character of Phantom
He is amazing: I've heard three Phantoms--Gerard Butler, Michael Crawford, and Ramin Karimloo. I can't decide, but I think MC is best outta the 3. But only JUST: Ramin K. was almost as amazing, if not just as. He is only 23. Gerard Butler just fails as a singer. His acting, however, is stunning, so passionate. It's just his singing that makes me go...ouch, in some parts:(
Ramin is the youngest to play the Phantom, he will be in the sequel Love Never Dies.I wonder in how Gerry's fan feel about this. Gerry is 40 now. He will not be doing the sequel.
I like the flow of the song and the timbre of his voice better in the highlights version but I love the lyrics of this version. Shame I can't get both at the same time! Oh well, that's the price we pay I suppose.
I got this song from the cd of the whole version of this. It cost me $35.00 to get it at best buy. but yeah i have this song on the 2 disk cd of the full version of this. thanx for putting this up.
Again guys Michael is an AMAZING ACTOR!!! I know because I saw MC FREAKING LIVE and saw the film and you can't judge someone you never saw perform the whole role! After seeing both guys I would still give every FREAKING AWARD TO MICHAEL. Thats how astonomically astounding MCs Phantom was! Plus listening to ALL THE ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMS back then and ALL THE WOMEN after the show everytime I went Michael was HOT as HELL as Erik.
Saw 'Michael Crawford' though ' Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em' then I heard his voice...

MCs voice is so smooth, powerful, seductive and sensual and has an eerie quality that sounds great for the character of Phantom

I have to agree, especially where this particular song is concerned. No One that even tries to sing music of the night can even touch Michael.

I agree with you although I did think that Ramin was 30

Ramin is the youngest to play the Phantom, he will be in the sequel Love Never Dies.I wonder in how Gerry's fan feel about this. Gerry is 40 now. He will not be doing the sequel.

I like the flow of the song and the timbre of his voice better in the highlights version but I love the lyrics of this version. Shame I can't get both at the same time! Oh well, that's the price we pay I suppose.

Saw both "Les Miserables" and "The Phantom of the Opera" in London in June, 1998. on the scale of 1-10, both musicals are way up there, past 10.

Plus listening to ALL THE ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMS back then and ALL THE WOMEN after the show everytime I went Michael was HOT as HELL as Erik.

i fucking hate michael crawford because i cannot sing as good as him. is it wrong to hate someone because of jealousy?
scrambledpenis 4 years ago
not necessarily. I see it as more of an envy thing though. However instead of being negative take that and use it for something positive instead.
