I can remember in 1993 driving a chieftain tank on the Hohne range road in Germany and being overtaken by a Leopard 2 towing another Leopard 2......as it drove past our tank our crew slid into our turrets through sheer embarrassment lol.
The true test is on the "real" battelfield, not on a "peacekeeping mission." Tanks against tanks, and tanks against artillery and infantry. Those are true tests. So, far, the Leopard II has not met this test.
Hmmm ... the Abrams shows in this "tests" that he can destroy old and unsuccessful tanks like T-54, T-55 and T-62. That he is a easy target for RPG's and other infantry-weapons ;-)
Canada is Fielding Leopard 2A6 C MBT in Afghanistan and it has seen lots of combat there... Or does anybody want to say the Canadians are not fighting there?
junior, germans have always had the best weapons in the world and were always far ahead in research and developement. there are bunch of predecessors to the leopard 2a6, which you can see most of the time in this video, which are better then the m1a1. but as everybody knows, its not all about the best weapons...

i totally agree with you, i dont know if it is none, but could be, at least not a lot. but there is no doubt it would be one of the greatest battle tanks there is. but it comes down to the crew and the overall tactics in the end. lets just hope we´ll never know...
spain is in iraq, germany in kosovo and afghanistan. germany got tanks in kosovo, but dunno if leo2. but since the opponent doesnt have tanks or not anymore at least, there hasnt been tank 2 tank combat. there might have been infantery 2 tank combat. anyway, you dont need to test a weapon in battle to know its good, if you do, you will know for sure, but the best weapons are the ones who wont be used. military has the task to hold up the threat against invaders, so they dont try, in my opinion
Wrong from about 1929 to 1941 US never tested torpedo, WW2 came along and american torpedos were duds. If its not tested in combat its unproving weapon as F22 is
i'm sorry, but i dont accept this argument. a lot has happned since 1941 and weapons testing is not at all what it was 70 years ago. leo 2 has been tested, its not just standing around. the only thing that hasnt been tested is to shoot at a target with human bings inside, but it has shot at tanks, moving targets and whatever, it works and it works pretty good and it can deal with any kind of terrain. you dont invest billions and build and sell tanks unless they work. that one is really easy to answer... 1st: leo 2 is expensive, 2nd: countries who fight wars support their own economy and purchase their own tanks. 3rd: the only country fighting wars with tanks are the us and britain and they both have their own tanks. 4th: existing contracts with e.g. russia for a long time. 5th: countries who purchase tanks for combat, don't need them for tanks vs tank, but rather tank vs infantery. I'm sure at least one of those answers fits any country in the world
as i just learned, the americans are buying the leopard 2's cannon, since it is the best in the NATO. they are using it for the abrahams. the only cannon better is the one the russians developed in '72. it is a 125mm cannon. they devleoped such a big cannon, cuz they can fire anti tank missiles with it. they put it into every tank ever since, the t90 nowadays. the leopard 2 has a 120mm cannon and the abrahams therefore as well. cheers
I saw a video of the Leo there recently of a Leo hitting a IED. It lifted the whole tank a good 5-6 feet of the ground, guess what happened then... It kept on rolling! What a beast of a machine!
I'm an M1A2 guy myself, but if they told me that I'd have to trade in my tank for an Leo 2A6, I could live with that. The new 55 calibre gun tube seems to add a useful amount of muzzle velocity...
Hahha, "day-to-day" service is his proof for the Leo's claim to superiority? WAR is the only real test. But, since it has no will to fight, Europe won't get the opportunity. Imagine if someone tried a boat for circumnavigating the world and all they offered for proof of its sea-worthiness was that it floated in a pond.
if you go to afghanistan (witch i dont think you got balls for) you will find some danes picking fights with the taliban riding in their leo2s. and sence they kick the yanks asses with their abrams in eksersises all the time my money is on the german steel.

I'd like to pass on a little note of thanks from my crew and myself for all your work in helping procure the new tanks and to let you know that it saved our lives the other night. My crew hit the IED the night of 2 Nov and went down in the history books as the first crew to test out the M package of the 2 A6 M. It worked how it was supposed to.
Unfortunately we didn't all walk away unharmed, my driver broke his left hip, but the fact that most of us only suffered bumps and bruises and ringing ears is testament to how well the new tanks function. This was our second IED strike in six weeks and much bigger than the first and only through sheer luck we were travelling in a Leo 2. I'm certain that we wouldn't have fared as well in another vehicle.
I know this strike will probably put a bit more work on your desk since the damage is at the point were I don't think the lease will cover it and we probably bought this one, but it helped four soldiers walk away relatively unharmed. At least the German Army and KMW can take comfort in the fact that the kit works and does save lives even if I did write off a tank.

Well you guys make money out of it and somehow, I think Germany has more leverage against those countries that purchase these kinds of weapons (militarily of course). Germany can just stop supplying the replacement parts to their suppliers if Germany wishes. That's one way of spreading your country's influence abroad.

That tank is long dead. It's not going anywhere, and really was doomed to that demise. As is Future Combat Systems. Too much money wasted in that program.
Here at Ft.Sill the word is that the "fast tank" is still being pushed forward along with the NLOS Cannon, which the factory is being built right here. The Future Combat Systems program is still going. Its just that production has slowed because of the waste of money in Iraq.
Yeah the NLOS cannon is still going, and it should. But I remember reading that the tank he was referring to has been canceled. Just take a look at the title of some of these articles regarding FCS (take out the spaces):

AT-11 "Sniper-B" does 6km, 900mm RHAe.
Average Western CE RHAe protection levels are above 1200mm. So even if you hit, no damage.

Except that he still has to stand still to really get a good chance to bring hte missile in. Loose the contect just once and the shot is ruined, that´s the problem. And as long as we´re not talking about a totally flat area, 6km are an illusoric range for direct fire anyway and on anything from 5km onwards, the L/55 is in range, making any ATGM attempt rather suicidal. The shells´s there before the missile has travelled half the way.
In ww2 we didn't have any experience anyway we had the best tanks and the best crews! By the way Norway takes back their sodiers from Afghanistan so probably German will send more soldiers for combat! It's already planned that Germany send PZH 2000 Artilleries to Afghanistan so probably there will also be some Leopards!
Leo2 is propably the best tank nevertheless, we have not seen it on the war field, i would like to see a fight between M1 and Leo2, but still if M1 crew is American, they would loose the fight anyway...

first of all...the T90 is just a modernized T72BM. its rate of fire is less than 9rpm. only the elite forces use the AT11. to penetrate 1000mm+ armor we use hellfire,tow,milan etc ( 1,5m pen.) or other anti tank rockets. the ammo of the T90 is placed in the crew area...so a direct hit will destroy the whole tank ! and btw..with the new duosabot ammo we will penetrate every reactive armor ! greetz from a german SGT
Leopard 2A6 can fire at range of 5 km with the best accurancy! In fact we have the best mobile artillery system, the PZH 2000 which can shoot up to 40km! And for you Russians we have the NATO! And against NATO RUssia has no chance cause if yoi fire your nuclear missliles whole Russia will also be destroyed by US missiles! Also Fact is that we have the best submarine type 212a and Fragtes F124! Russian power you know nothing about Nato tanks!
Em if you need USA to destroy Russia during nuclear battle, that says alot about the weeknes of NATO if US wasnt part of it. And in case tanks start rolin' around Russians probably would make more than all of NATO countrys toghter. Just like in WW2.

Russians got some pretty powerfull tank hunter helicopters to like Ka-50, Ka-52, Mi-28, and Mi-24 still in service. They can destroy tanks pretty effectivly.
And at times of war russian would train equaly good crews as any other country, becouse theyr survival would depend on them in case of WW3.
I know these Helicopters but their problem is that they are too slow and too big! The Tiger is small, fast and very handable! The Tiger is the German helicopter like in the US the Apache! The disadvantage of Russian helicopters is that they are inferior to the german Helicopters also in air combat! German Helicopters are small, fast and can turn around very fast and effective!
But russian helis are almost invincible, yuo know it takes at leats 20mm cannon to take down Mi-24 and even more powerfull to drop more moderd helicopters {better matirials, technologies etc.). So if russian hellis get those Leo2's heck their screwed.
I doesn take a 20mm canaon, you just have to shoot into the rotors and every helicopter goes down! If you are a good shooter you can shoot a helicopter down with an Ak, G36 M16....
The Tiger also has a 20mm Gun! But in air combat the russian Hlicopters are inferior to the Tiger PAH becasue thei are too big for air combat! For air combat you need small and fast helicopters!
I got one fact for ya. During some Pakistan iranian war {some shit like that:P} iranian Mi-24's were succesfully shuting down pakistans Ah-1 Cobras. While beeing alot more heavier.
And try to shoot a helicopter in it's rotors. It would take a sniper with a something like a 50 cal machingun to hit it's rotors.
Yes i depends on which battle! Front on front it desn't matter! But the AH 1 Cobra is a slow Helicopter! And in Iraq Apache Helicopters were shot dowen with handfire guns! You can shoot every Helivopter down no doubt, but The Tiger is fast and has a good mobility, so he's superior to Russian Mi helicopters!

The M1A2 abrams and the leo 2 are birthed from the same project. The US opted to save maney in certain areas, making the leo 2 more affective. The Abrams is battle tested, hard to beat that.
Of eight KE rounds Fired from M1A1's M256 (Licence built copy of Rheinmetall's L44 gun), one was able to reach leo's armour underneath his arrow shaped add-on armour at the fronth of its turret. That thing is as hard as monolite from Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke!
I am really interested in the turret design. Its supposed to deflect KE rounds and break them up. I like the concept, and wonder if anyone knows of live fire tests involving different kinds of rounds?

Unfortunately we didn't all walk away unharmed, my driver broke his left hip, but the fact that most of us only suffered bumps and bruises and ringing ears is testament to how well the new tanks function. This was our second IED strike in six weeks and much bigger than the first and only through sheer luck we were travelling in a Leo 2. I'm certain that we wouldn't have fared as well in another vehicle.

I know this strike will probably put a bit more work on your desk since the damage is at the point were I don't think the lease will cover it and we probably bought this one, but it helped four soldiers walk away relatively unharmed. At least the German Army and KMW can take comfort in the fact that the kit works and does save lives even if I did write off a tank.

Well you guys make money out of it and somehow, I think Germany has more leverage against those countries that purchase these kinds of weapons (militarily of course). Germany can just stop supplying the replacement parts to their suppliers if Germany wishes. That's one way of spreading your country's influence abroad.

Here at Ft.Sill the word is that the "fast tank" is still being pushed forward along with the NLOS Cannon, which the factory is being built right here. The Future Combat Systems program is still going. Its just that production has slowed because of the waste of money in Iraq.

AT-11 is not fire and forget, it's beam riding, and requires the firing tank to be still for the whole flight of the ATGM, 20s for 6km.

They can attempt it with a heavily reduced chance of hitting the target, first of all Russian FCS is poorest of all MBT's, lack of low elevation of the gun means going over high angles hills or pieces of ground means loosing the aim, so on flat ground it's possible but generally not recommended for high hit accuracy. Even when still the hit-box 2x2 metres.
AT-11 "Sniper-B" does 6km, 900mm RHAe.
Average Western CE RHAe protection levels are above 1200mm. So even if you hit, no damage.

Except that he still has to stand still to really get a good chance to bring hte missile in. Loose the contect just once and the shot is ruined, that´s the problem. And as long as we´re not talking about a totally flat area, 6km are an illusoric range for direct fire anyway and on anything from 5km onwards, the L/55 is in range, making any ATGM attempt rather suicidal. The shells´s there before the missile has travelled half the way.

In ww2 we didn't have any experience anyway we had the best tanks and the best crews! By the way Norway takes back their sodiers from Afghanistan so probably German will send more soldiers for combat! It's already planned that Germany send PZH 2000 Artilleries to Afghanistan so probably there will also be some Leopards!

first of all...the T90 is just a modernized T72BM. its rate of fire is less than 9rpm. only the elite forces use the AT11. to penetrate 1000mm+ armor we use hellfire,tow,milan etc ( 1,5m pen.) or other anti tank rockets. the ammo of the T90 is placed in the crew area...so a direct hit will destroy the whole tank ! and btw..with the new duosabot ammo we will penetrate every reactive armor ! greetz from a german SGT

Leopard 2A6 can fire at range of 5 km with the best accurancy! In fact we have the best mobile artillery system, the PZH 2000 which can shoot up to 40km! And for you Russians we have the NATO! And against NATO RUssia has no chance cause if yoi fire your nuclear missliles whole Russia will also be destroyed by US missiles! Also Fact is that we have the best submarine type 212a and Fragtes F124! Russian power you know nothing about Nato tanks!

Russians got some pretty powerfull tank hunter helicopters to like Ka-50, Ka-52, Mi-28, and Mi-24 still in service. They can destroy tanks pretty effectivly.
And at times of war russian would train equaly good crews as any other country, becouse theyr survival would depend on them in case of WW3.

I know these Helicopters but their problem is that they are too slow and too big! The Tiger is small, fast and very handable! The Tiger is the German helicopter like in the US the Apache! I doesn take a 20mm canaon, you just have to shoot into the rotors and every helicopter goes down! If you are a good shooter you can shoot a helicopter down with an Ak, G36 M16....
The Tiger also has a 20mm Gun! But in air combat the russian Hlicopters are inferior to the Tiger PAH becasue thei are too big for air combat! For air combat you need small and fast helicopters!

I got one fact for ya. During some Pakistan iranian war {some shit like that:P} iranian Mi-24's were succesfully shuting down pakistans Ah-1 Cobras. While beeing alot more heavier.
And try to shoot a helicopter in it's rotors. It would take a sniper with a something like a 50 cal machingun to hit it's rotors.

Yes i depends on which battle! Front on front it desn't matter! But the AH 1 Cobra is a slow Helicopter! And in Iraq Apache Helicopters were shot dowen with handfire guns! You can shoot every Helivopter down no doubt, but The Tiger is fast and has a good mobility, so he's superior to Russian Mi helicopters!

and an canadian general told the interviewer that the gun-accuracy of the leopard is more efficient than air-strikes from above.
@Tippgoodboy: The leopard has a smaller heat signature compared to the m1a2 and it has a jammer and it can rocket interfering transmitter.

The M1A2 abrams and the leo 2 are birthed from the same project. The US opted to save maney in certain areas, making the leo 2 more affective. The Abrams is battle tested, hard to beat that.

Of eight KE rounds Fired from M1A1's M256 (Licence built copy of Rheinmetall's L44 gun), one was able to reach leo's armour underneath his arrow shaped add-on armour at the fronth of its turret. That thing is as hard as monolite from Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke!
