My horse has been diagnosed with narcolepsy. Trust me, you don't want your horse to have it. It's a serious condition, and not something to be taken lightly. My horse falls asleep when I am tacking her up, so I have to walk her around anywhere from 3-18 times everyday that I ride her, so that she doesn't fall over. And yes my horse really has fallen over before, in fact three times in one day. I know that they're testing treatments for it in California, but there's no cure yet, right?
Narcolepsy is extremely rare in horses. Sleep deprivation that causes these types of episodes is fairly common. Google sleep deprivation in horses or Dr. Joe Bertone DVM for info.
She hasn't done it since she started staying in at night. That's a great thought, but it would happen at any silly time while we'd be grooming, not just with the saddle tightened.
Does she do that when she is not tacked up? Main arteries that run from belly to chest to head get 'cut off" when girth is tightened up. Just a thought. Some horses are really sensitive to that.
I use to have an older Morgan QH cross that once you tightened the girth he would start to drop like that. it was a nerve that's underneath the girth that can be very sensitive. its more common in QH's. If i walked him 2 steps forward he would be fine.
She's not narcoleptic- at the time she was out 24/7 and wasn't getting her REM cycle, I think. This happened about 3 times in the course of about 2 months and once I had her coming in at night, it never happened again. Not narco, but thanks for your concerns :)
o that is so funny....one time a friend of mine was getting ready to mount a horse she was schooling and he did the exact same thing. Also one time I was leading around a pony that I had just done a schooling ride on, and so I was cooling him out, when as we were walking he got down and started rolling...it was so funny...luv this video
