there's actually a stronger link between lung cancer and the air you breathe than lung cancer and smoking cigarettes. but whatever. it does smell like shit.
Smoking isnt stupid. Thats like saying my pencil is stupid. Does smoking think and react in ways that make it stupid? I smoke n everyone else should or shouldnt. Grandpa started at 5 died at 86 with perfect lungs. So media STFU and have a cigarette break. SMOKE SMOKE SMOKE THAT CIGAR-ETTE!
@Theguido177 omg... ur an idiot lol. so ur grandpa lived till 86.. big deal. hes just one person. what about the millions that have died from smoking? hmm lets see; 1x grandpa versus millions of deaths. ooohh i get it now, smoking is good for you!... dickwad,.
@123perrin It is a big deal. One? Haha my entire family are a bunch o smokers and probably healthier n stronger then your punk ass, and everyone around me are as well. Its all media bullshit, CAPICHE? MILLIONS of deaths my ass. There ya go, smoking good, dipshit.
@Theguido177 well thats ur perogative, ur life. i dont have a problem with ppl smoking, so long as they keep their smoke to themselves. (ie; adults smoking with kids in car pisses me off to no end) if ur smoking affects no one else, then go for it. if i chewed tobacco, and i spat the spit/tar all over ur shoes because u were standing nearby, i doubt u'd be happy. it just amazes me that there are still ppl today believing that smoking does no harm to the human body. amazing.
my english professor showed us this as an intro to a paper and he thinks the 21 second mark is the most hilarious thing ever! (which i would have to agree). he kept playing it over and over lol
I've actually seen a person die from lung cancer. She died drowning in her own blood and mucus (coming from the lungs from the tumors). After that I've never touched a cigarette.
I LOVE THESE OLD STUPID COMMERCIALS!!! Smoking is stupid and if people want to keep doing so, they should do it in their own homes. Anyone agree or disagree with me here?
what a wonderful commercial. Made me feel real good. I would've definitely been sucked in by this commercial back then. Grab a pack and my best girl and head down to the lake!
I agree as a smoker they are not good for you but this is a classic commercial that made you feel happy. And if you smoke THAT is what it is all about. Good or bad at least you had a CHOICE back then. Your choice. The government is trying to be mommy these days and frankly that is not good and frankly not American last time I checked,
@Jimboyc21 I agree Jim. Like I said in my previous post I quit three years ago, but it was my decision. I'm in my 40's and starting to care a little more about my lungs and body. But if there's one thing I absolutely despise, it's the govt. getting in my business where they have no business whatsoever. And a lot of these 'laws' they come up with are put solely in place as moneymakers. The first that come to mind are these click it or ticket seat belt laws.
I keep seeing posts where people are commenting on how stupid and gullible people back then were to believe the cigarette ads. But things haven't changed that much. Now instead of poisoning themselves with tobacco smoke they're doing it with alcohol and drugs. And look how many were stupid enough to vote an illegal Kenyan communist into the White House.
But back when these ads aired, not much was known about the health hazards of smoking (adding filters to a cigarette was one answer), more than 60% of the people smoked, and the TV networks made big money off these ads. Commercials even aired where doctors recommended that their patients smoke Camels. Looking at these ads today does make people laugh, especially if you haven't been born yet when cigarette ads were banned from TV...considering how condemned smoking is now.
@tobyradloff I quit smoking three years ago. But I have to admit there are times, especially after a cup of coffee or after eating a meal that I do miss smoking. I only wish smoking weren't so addictive. I was able to quit with the help of Chantix pills. What I don't understand is that despite thousands of alcoholics in this country, there's never been any backlash against beer or hard liquor commercials. Apparently the alcohol lobby has more dough than the tobacco lobby.
Still, years ago, the TV networks never ran commercials for hard liquor (such as whiskey, gin, vodka, and rum.) ABC, CBS, CW, Fox, ION, and NBC still don't run booze ads, but I have seen commercials for hard liquor on various cable channels, typically those that cater to an upscale audience...and the ads are for expensive top-shelf spirits. And in beer and wine commercials, you NEVER see anyone ACTUALLY drinking it.
@tobyradloff Whether they're showing somebody drinking it or not is beside the point. They're still pushing the product. Don't get me wrong. I like a cold beer on a hot day and I still like the old Lowenbrau jingle. But they still have a double standard when it comes to the tobacco and alcohol industries. And the drug industry can be included too. I used Chantix to help me stop smoking after seeing televised ads. Now they treat Chantix like it's tobacco. Musta paid the wrong politician off.
@lakhal99 Actually, the dangers were out there, but everyone on TV was smoking, so, kinda hard to fault the general public for following suit. Just another example of how the tobacco companies were just crooks even then.
@lakhal99 I know, ha, they made it look so appealing. There were advantages to living back then, just as there are today. The more we grow, the more we lose. Gain technology, lose real communication between people. I do miss the old days in that aspect.
I'm sure the cigarettes in those days depended much less on the chemicals they use today. Not that they were better, they were still inhaling smoke. Ah well to each their own.
@Watchtower533 Same chemicals back then, only now the strength of them is way way more addicting to make up for the loss of revenue...too many people caught on to the lies.
if anyone wants to quit, and they havent yet heard of Allen Carr, i hope they do look him up, as an EX chain smoker himself he understands the psycology of smokers, he has been there and done it, and his method is like nothing else, i personally think that if your a smoker and youve (like me) tried alot of times to quit and failed, then you know in your heart that quiting smoking is the single greatest thing you can ever do to improve your life, he has a 90% success rate and money back guarantee
I remember the line "spring time, it happens every Salem". I guess nothing says springtime like filling your lungs with smoke and destroying the minute air pockets that transfer oxygen to the blood. Yeah, springtime, it happens every COUGH! COUGH! WHEEEEEZ! COUGH COUGH!! Salem, COUGH! COUGH!
It's easy to poke fun at the silliness of these commercials today, but back then, cigarettes were so much intertwined in American business and culture, you couldn't escape them. It wasn't a matter if you smoked or not, i was a matter of which brand of cigarettes you smoked, and they were all out to make sure you bought their brand.
Back before cigarette commercials were banned from TV and radio on New Years' Day 1971, it seemed like every other commercial on prime time network TV was for cigarettes. (Back then your only choices were ABC, CBS, and NBC, as well as PBS and a few independent stations-cable wasn't widespread yet.) Still, despite how bad smoking is, some of those old cigarette commercials had catchy, memorable jingles.
Prescription drug commercials weren't on TV until at least the mid-1980's. Now they are common. I do recall that shortly after cigarette commercials were banned, you started seeing more commercials for feminine hygiene products (such as maxi-pads, tampons, douches, and FDS spray) ... commercials you rarely saw before then. And kids' shows started getting more and more cereal and toy commercials. The networks needed to make up for the lost revenue somehow.
@BubbleBobble69 From the time I could read, I remember seeing that warning on the sides of the cigarette packages. I'm more inclined to think they were all in denial. I do agree with your comment about the "rich people" with interests...etc. That's a no-brainer, right there.
the good thing about filter cigarettes is that it also cleans the polluted air you normally breathe - so you get the clean air PLUS fresh air from the cigs win win ;)
---> tobyradloff fluoride is more effective rat poison than strychnine ...americans drink it every day they should know - and strychnine is also used as stimulants ...oh yes, salt is also toxic if you get enough
@DiscoverPlatinum Also, most of our parents' were smoking in front of us, in the house, in the car, everywhere. It was just the "thing to do" at the time. I used to LOVE the smell of a cigarette whenever my parents would light up, and yes, they both smoke Salem. I couldn't wait to get old enough to smoke! My parents of course, warned us not to start, even they knew better but were already hooked.
@munchkinsmomable When I got older, I used to complain every time my mom would light up. I made the decision not to start smoking when I was in elementary school. I also wasn't the type who would cave into peer pressure. My complaints finally held some ground when my mom switched from More to Virginia Slim. After that, I didn't complain much because the smell was not nearly as strong as Mores.
@DiscoverPlatinum Well, I definitely applaud you for never starting. I'm glad I and my ex quit when we did, and kept after our kids to never smoke or do drugs, etc. Parental influence really does work after all, at least in our case. Our "kids" don't smoke and hopefully none of the other stuff as well. (They're adults now.)
Just like this commercial is hilarious I wonder if kids not born yet in 2040 will be laffing at us and our Pharmecutical commercials that suggest we ask our Doctors about medicine we know nothing about based on a corporate commercial...not much different then ppl believing cigarettes were safe to smoke 40 years ago..
One of my favorite cigarette jingles! Damn, I miss the days when we didn't go around like a bunch of Nazi psychopaths in a perpetual state of being offended! I don't smoke but, I long for the days when smokers were just part of the social background because we were once a free people.
Old cigarette commercials are appreciated now because they help us remember the sights and sounds of the Old Republic.
News flash, you heard it first I still think the "new cigarette", cell phones will pan out to be harmful to those who are addicted and they are. Constant "have to talk" addiction.
Radiation. So pick your poison. I smoke, not proud but ya know what...OMG I do not have a cell phone. Do not want that addiction too. It's all relative in life.
@THEDOGSBODIES1 Oh, suuuuuure! Smoking is cool! Watching someone you love die a slow, horrible death in a hospital bed from pancreatic cancer, though, not so much. To watch your own parent wither away to nothing more than a skeleton with skin, and finally draw their last breath...no, NOT SO MUCH. Do you have children? If not, are you planning to? Well, this could be your and their future, as well as everyone else in your family.
@munchkinsmomable wow what a dick, its a quote you bellend and this is the internet i can say or do as i like. So fuck you and your family, stop trying to school people and get a life, one filled with cancer i hope
@teceyS3 Like? None of that stuff is as addictive or as cleverly marketed as tobacco has been over the years. If nothing else, we as a society should have learned by now not to fall for any of it.
Smoking is no good, I smoke but ya gotta love the catchy theme songs. They were first class produced. Now those guys are doing ED and depression ads. Not the same! Love the happy 60's!
30 years ago everybody smoked. Know everybody is against. Typical Americans. Smoking is bad for you, but so is alcohol, stress, and lots of food contains stuff that causes cancer. Please, shut up....
@LapisGarter Now give some examples....I want to know. Call me cynical, but I can't think of a thing tricky enough to convince me to buy it these days. I guess you could say I learned my lesson!
Those were the days. Of course we know so much now.
YET no one says anything about eating food on plastic especially when it has been warmed in a microwave. Hot coffee in a styrophome cup. Children rolling around and eating off new carpet. Laugh but it's the same killer. Just that petrolium is too powerful to let you know. But someday you will know.
@munchkinsmomable Yes but EVERYONE beats you up for smoking. A mindless child feels qualified to yell at an adult who smokes and throw away his cigarettes. But no one talks about plastic. Years ago I nuked some bar-b-que in a plastic container and saw how it developed a hot spot enough to melt the plastic and mix with the food. I knew then how it was very dangerous. But the world does not come down on it. Instead there is more and more plastic for children to put in their mouths.
These cigarette commercials were the most creative and expensive thing on TV at the time. Kind of reminds me of modern gasoline commercials. At the time the ads were most popular, sponsors were telling us that cigs were good for us, knowing they were highly addictive and dangerous. By the same token, water disintegration has been a science that is actively suppressed since at least WW2. Gasoline is toxic waste which is pushed on us by oil companies that are ancillary to government.
But in that same time frame (1960's), gasoline commercials were intriguing as well...which gasoline had the highest octane, the highest performance, the best gas mileage, etc. I used to love the old Gulf No-Nox commercials with Goofy that aired on Walt Disney's Wonderful World Of Color on Sunday nights. Also the Shell ads where the cars with Platformate kept going while others ran out of gas. Gasoline commercials are plentiful on YouTube.
@tobyradloff After WW2, America entered its golden years. The prosperity of this time ended in 1974. Now we are facing an economic collapse that will make the great depression following the roaring 20's look like a cake walk.
Probably the brand Ricardo Montalban smoked in his Chrysler Cordoba, although he did have problems getting cigarette burns and ashes all over the "Rich Corinthian Leather" seats.
this lady's name was Elizabeth “Llesha” Gullison , she had a twin sister who died in 1977. Anway, she just passed away this week in Williston, ND.from cancer at the age of 70.
Also a city in Columbiana County, Ohio, just south of Youngstown. And there's also a Salem, Massachusetts. And Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the world headquarters of R. J. Reynolds.
@tobyradloff : All named after Indian Salem! As USA and India have common Colonial Heritage, British named several places in USA with Indian Names! There is even 2 Madras named after Indian Madras! in USA.
Lmfao are they serious! Smoking a cigarette is just like smoking fresh air? You gotta give those ad guys credit. It takes balls to say that kind of bullshit on national tv. xD
everyone looked so healthy and happy back then. now everyone is fuckin fat and suicidal. i blame women and liberals.. it never happened until THEY got in power.
As appropriate as it can be, this song shows how addictive smoking is. When you can get the song out of your head, you might as well be as strong-willed to quit!

When the government gets really broke they'll be making smoking mandatory and then euthanize people at 65.

@mjd001 yeah, like when the national debt goes through the roof! Oh, wait....
munchkinsmomable 5 months ago
Yeah, so now I know why there are so many baby boomer smokers now. Hell, even I might fall for this commercial if it weren't for anti-smoking ads.
DiscoverPlatinum 10 months ago
@DiscoverPlatinum Also, most of our parents' were smoking in front of us, in the house, in the car, everywhere. It was just the "thing to do" at the time. I used to LOVE the smell of a cigarette whenever my parents would light up, and yes, they both smoke Salem. I couldn't wait to get old enough to smoke! My parents of course, warned us not to start, even they knew better but were already hooked.
munchkinsmomable 5 months ago
@munchkinsmomable sorry, that's "smoked..."
munchkinsmomable 5 months ago
@munchkinsmomable When I got older, I used to complain every time my mom would light up. I made the decision not to start smoking when I was in elementary school. I also wasn't the type who would cave into peer pressure. My complaints finally held some ground when my mom switched from More to Virginia Slim. After that, I didn't complain much because the smell was not nearly as strong as Mores.
DiscoverPlatinum 5 months ago
@DiscoverPlatinum Well, I definitely applaud you for never starting. I'm glad I and my ex quit when we did, and kept after our kids to never smoke or do drugs, etc. Parental influence really does work after all, at least in our case. Our "kids" don't smoke and hopefully none of the other stuff as well. (They're adults now.)

Just like this commercial is hilarious I wonder if kids not born yet in 2040 will be laffing at us and our Pharmecutical commercials that suggest we ask our Doctors about medicine we know nothing about based on a corporate commercial...not much different then ppl believing cigarettes were safe to smoke 40 years ago..
stevefromPA2 10 months ago
I think people now-a-days need to cut back on a lot more than cigarettes and start exercising plus eating more salads

There's a wonderful of softmores that smoke there is a wonderful world of freshmens that smoke
Mrcomputergeek1 11 months ago
News flash, you heard it first I still think the "new cigarette", cell phones will pan out to be harmful to those who are addicted and they are. Constant "have to talk" addiction.
Radiation. So pick your poison. I smoke, not proud but ya know what...OMG I do not have a cell phone. Do not want that addiction too. It's all relative in life.

THEDOGSBODIES1 11 months ago
@THEDOGSBODIES1 Oh, suuuuuure! Smoking is cool! Watching someone you love die a slow, horrible death in a hospital bed from pancreatic cancer, though, not so much. To watch your own parent wither away to nothing more than a skeleton with skin, and finally draw their last breath...no, NOT SO MUCH. Do you have children? If not, are you planning to? Well, this could be your and their future, as well as everyone else in your family.

@LapisGarter Now give some examples....I want to know. Call me cynical, but I can't think of a thing tricky enough to convince me to buy it these days. I guess you could say I learned my lesson!
munchkinsmomable 5 months ago
Those were the days. Of course we know so much now.
YET no one says anything about eating food on plastic especially when it has been warmed in a microwave. Hot coffee in a styrophome cup. Children rolling around and eating off new carpet. Laugh but it's the same killer. Just that petrolium is too powerful to let you know. But someday you will know.
1967mustanggta 1 year ago
@1967mustanggta Those of us who pay attention and actually care, know.
munchkinsmomable 5 months ago
@munchkinsmomable Yes but EVERYONE beats you up for smoking. A mindless child feels qualified to yell at an adult who smokes and throw away his cigarettes. But no one talks about plastic. Years ago I nuked some bar-b-que in a plastic container and saw how it developed a hot spot enough to melt the plastic and mix with the food. I knew then how it was very dangerous. But the world does not come down on it. Instead there is more and more plastic for children to put in their mouths.
1967mustanggta 5 months ago
These cigarette commercials were the most creative and expensive thing on TV at the time. Kind of reminds me of modern gasoline commercials. At the time the ads were most popular, sponsors were telling us that cigs were good for us, knowing they were highly addictive and dangerous. By the same token, water disintegration has been a science that is actively suppressed since at least WW2. Gasoline is toxic waste which is pushed on us by oil companies that are ancillary to government.
dynagravitomagnetic 1 year ago
@dynagravitomagnetic
Gasoline commercials are plentiful on YouTube.
tobyradloff 1 day ago
@tobyradloff After WW2, America entered its golden years. The prosperity of this time ended in 1974. Now we are facing an economic collapse that will make the great depression following the roaring 20's look like a cake walk.
