The last few cameras I have owned focus as good in auto as can be achieved in manual when shooting portraits. Unless I'm shooting in very low light conditions or doing macro work, auto is fine, so I wouldn't hold that against him.
first look at joe mc nally and then we talk .. how he shots what camera he uses.. how its uses the camera etc etc .. i have nothing with steve.. just he uses a lot auto focus...manual mode more perfection :) and also more control.
I've been to 2 of Joe Mcnally's workshops. Unless the situation calls for it (low light, using strobes, etc) he uses autofocus most of the time. Check out his videos here on youtube, I haven't seen every video out there, but I don't think I've ever seen him touch the manual focus ring. Professionals use the best tool available to get the job done. Some photographers I'm sure like using manual focus. They do it because they like to, not because it's the only thing that works.
i have seen him in most of his video tutorials using manual focus.. thats why.. i said.. maybe he uses auto more then i saw him .. but in most cases manual..thats what i saw ...
P.S. At 6:08 what is that? Stuck in 1970's click click shooting styles of the 1970's B film flick??? No one shoots like that dont give false info to think your making the video cool.. Cause it sure did not help this guys cause.. Or your product. Which is very good by the way..
Very very dry dry video example. Little info.. Almost as if he is talking a to a simpleton.. "Talk to your model" Duh... Just fluff talking with no beef to what and why he is doing things. Look at David Macey and the video pro that shot the girl on the beach with the rocks and Mamiya camera and studio flashes.. Those are instructional videos that have substance..
what lens is he using? i think it was a 85 f1,8 or a 100m f2 and a strange hood

Not one of his best vids, but the man knows what he's doing. Check out his website, to be sure.

Too bad auto focus is used by most pros, dumbass... why waste time and possibility of getting out of focus images with manual focus?

Yeah. Ugh. He's a robot who thinks of the world as objects within objects. It was disturbing to watch. Humans are appliances.

another "techniques" video. Let's not show the view what you're shooting. let's just show the photogapher. show us the set up, show us the progress!
