The intention was surely to produce the Purcell tune using an 8-bit computer, using any one of a plethora of sequencing tools that were around both at the time (80's), and afterwards. Some might have been midi capable, some not, but it really doesn't matter, because what we're hearing is an 8-bit tune!

FAIL!!!!!!!!! What makes the whole song are the fluttering notes in between the large chords of the song. Not putting those notes in is just an insult to the music, film, and Kubrick himself.
