Gilmore is a clock punching no talent asshole, and waters is a staight money worshiping theif, who back stabbed a wonderful and truly talented person for fame because no one liked him and they wanted what he had period. I can really feel for syd, and he was alive today with the rest of the PIGS, there's no way I'd let him walk past me without reaching out to him
I don't find this creepy- Syd hated doing this, and it shows here. He also looks pretty frazzled. But he doesn't seem crazy or completely gone. If he were completely gone he wouldn't have been able to lipsync any of it. It's more sad than anything else. On the Pat Boone show he was lucid enough to lipsync during the rehearsals and then not do it when the camera was rolling. He knew what he was doing.
Thank you. Syd knew just what he was doing. Sure he may have been high at times but he wasn't insane or mentally unstable. Not then he wasn't. He was just beyond sick of it all (listen to Jugband Blues and most of his other songs written about that time). He was always disgusted by such a farce (i.e. Bob Dylan Blues written when he was 15). Syd loved his art (both paint and music) but couldn't stand the fact that THIS was how he had to perform it. The Pat Boone Show shows that perfectly clearly.
@itsskatee No idea, I guess he was just observing. From what Roger Waters was saying about this performance, is that they did many takes of it....Syd would mime the song normally (because they were all just lip-synching/miming the song) but then when they would go for an official cut he would just stop and stare...like he did a couple times in this video. This was not long after they recorded 'Jugband Blues' and were in America for 4 days...this is when Syd (as they say) lost it.
@2010zelda LOL This is the edit. I guess someone was wise to the fact that he was being a freak at the time and cut away to as much video they could use. A weird looking dude starring and not moving his mouth for half the song would freak out middle America in the 60s. This is creepy enough for me.
@tye1591 Not true this is American Bandstand. He did some of the song but just stopped at times. Hence the cutaway shots. Pat Boone is the really crazy one where he never lipsyncs at all. Too bad there is no video of it left.
I prefer the band with Gilmour in it, but you can't deny Syd's influence he had on the band, and I doubt they'd have made albums such as Dark side and the Wall without him
I don't like the Wall that much i am a gimour fan and love richards keyboard i don't like rogers solo attempt with the wall. I mean part 1-2 of brick in the wall are good part 2 is ******* (You like PF?, YEAH I LIKE BitW (part 2). FUCK OFF!)
Dark side of the moon, More, Devision Bell, A momentary lapse of reason, abscoured by clouds, and Ofc ANIMALS FTW! wish you were here is the best ending to a band ever ;p.
you cannot compare syd barrett with john lennon, syd was great but not a genius like lennon, you can allways take a gitare and if you don't know how to play yo can only make noise, but lennon have made music, like the birds, the nature has music, but somethimes syd was only making noise
it is sad when you are the coolest thing in the world and you have to stand like a puppet and mime for a comlpetely clued out industry . sadder still nothing has changed in 40 years
Acutally, theres a great story behind this, and it's nothing about him being tripped out. He hated the lip snying shit, and while they were practicing he would practice right along and be fine, then finally "alright it's good, we're filming this one" and he'd start making it look real bad and everything. Thats why the final video of this has Water's lip syncing. I've heard multiple members of the band retell this story.
Syd is true here by not trying to mimic something.
Of course, there is a different example of handling the lip syncing with a sense of humour and irony: "Ticket to Ride", where John Lennon messes up some of his vocal parts and then grinning into the camera (great!).
But he was of couse a different kind of personality.
That was on Pat Boone Show. They got through American Bandstand unscathed. Syd mimed this no problem. However when they did The Pat Boone Show they were to play "See Emily Play" and Syd was to mime but when they filmed he wouldn't do squat. Then they filmed with Roger miming. That footage is lost forever. Thank God a collector had PF's appearance on American Bandstand. 20 years later, David Gilmour played live on Staurday Night Live with the SNL band.
A little taste of how cooked in the brain was Syd getting by this time (late 1967).Look at the poor bastard, the easiest thing to do,a lipsynch, and he cant do it properly. His eyes are dead, all his sparkling, articulate and intelligent personality is gone:he's almost a drulling zombie, with the attitude of a retard.Behavior like this leaded to the cancellation of their first american tour, frustration of his bandmates and eventually the rejection of his management and production team. Gone by 1968!
This had to have been the last TV appearance he had with them. The cracks were beginning to show. This was on "American Bandstand" in late 1967, though Floyd were unknown here at the time. AB didn't have a Top 30 requirement like "Top of the Pops".

If only they showed more of Syd on this video. Don't the lead vocalist get more screen time. The others got more screen time than Syd.
