pipa is awesome, i am from pakistan and we have an instrument that is from afghanistan called the "rubab" - it is a similar sound, but of course contains stronger elements of south asian music. i love both.
Exemplary technique and performance. One thing to my regret is that probably due to the Yao Yao MA effect, many great Chinese musical instrument performers tend to abandon their elegant traditional movements and adopt very exaggerated movements in their performance. That I think is a step backward. Not every thing Wesetern represents progress.
@oilcraze It's not exaggerated... when a musician reaches a certain level of mastery over a piece of music these kinds of movements manifest themselves naturally in a euphoric, almost trance-like state when completely in sync with the music. Although it is suppressible and does not affect each musician in the same manner or to the same degree, it does exist and is not a "Western" construct.
Anyone interested in this piece, please buy Wu Man's latest CD "Immeasurable Light." You can find this piece under the title "Leaves Flying in Autumn," or "楊花九月飛." The CD version is a bit longer.
I saw you on the Jim Lehrer Newshour. You're simply the coolest.
If you get a chance take a listen to my site BertGriffin88. I've posted 99 original songs here. Check out: "She Is Where I Want To Be", "So The Psycho Took Her Life", and "I Want To Know (Who Gets The Money)".
Some people don't understand subtlety around here. I have to paint a picture for you? Okay here we go......... I would expect after an AMAZING performance like that NEVER heard of before, audience would be ROARING that's all my "POINT" is. Sheeeeeesh get your panties all in a knot kiddo? But then again the audience must have lifted out of their bodies and slow to return from heaven so the applauds were just a bit delayed and weak. PEACE. ^_^
Something amazing happened at the end of a live performance that I saw wuman give in Alabama. There was the usual applause and encore. Then as if by direction the audience fell silent and just SAT there. We where spell bound and simply could not leave. She returned for one last
"gift". I will never forget her graciousness and the tender and lively way she played her pipa - as if it had been a child or a lover. Thank you for this post!
she is excellent. I already saw her this morning (2/12/07)at "bellas artes" in Mexico, with the sinfonic orchestra playing a Lou Harrison concert and she in brilliant. Thak for post this.
i've seen her before with Kronos Quartet, and wish they could record another album together, this time of Terry Riley's "The Cusp of Magic" that i saw them play....
Herm not so much on the melody but this piece was made to show off her skills, it takes a lot of virtuosity to perform this, especially the regular repeated themes.
I like this video, I bet that the last two comments below are from americans lol

At the time of this posting, 4 people are either very arrogant or very very stupid. This was a truly excellent performance, in my humble opinion.
