@zombihamster: I'm not saying you're wrong, but a good director (and Blake Edwards does fit in that category) would not endanger his extras that way. An extra IS an actor after all. With the right instructions by the director, they could look frightened on cue and begin a mad dash away.
Thinking about it, that COULD have been a telephoto shot with the extras MUCH further away than what you think you see. The telephoto lens would have brought everything together. Just my two cents.
You know, if they put extra weight on that rocket they might've succeeded on staying on the track! But if they had any more fuel, they might've reached a good distance to the stratosphere!
