Really captures what seems to be the spirit of the Broadway version - feels more like a derby or sporting event. The original London version was like being in a dark and slightly threatening nightclub. Love both!
that is AWESOME! did you get to meet andrew lloyd weber and see this show on opening night! i want to see this show sooooooo bad. and i want to see it the way it was suppose to be done, with the track that goes to the mezzanine!
it IS live, just a technical problem that there was no sound! It has to be live, the show can change direction if a accident or technical hitch happens and the orchestra has to respond!
Get a clue. It was live. The only pre-recorded aspect in some versions of Starlight was the voice of control and even that was live in some venues. If there was ever any delay in interaction between the conductor and the orchestra is was likely because in general the orchestra pit for this show was backstage and relayed by camera.
This is the closing night of Starlight Express at the Gershwin Theater in New York City. There was a full orchestra along with 3 or 4 booth singers on the 3rd floor every single night. The booth singers were added just to sweetin the sound a bit for the ensemble numbers and some harmony over Reva Rice's (Pearl) song, "Make Up My Heart." Each one of us had a small body mic that went over our heads, through our hair to our forehead. EVERYTHING was live except for the young boys voice.
It brings much more fun when you see it in the theater in Germany! The whole set is so much bigger. There are much more action in it. The stage in NY looks like a "cage". Just too small! This amazing show needs space!!!
the London stage was smaller, but i feel it made you more part of the show, the bridge had alot more impact, it didn't feel lost in a vast space,it played a bigger part in the race sequences. to me the london set was the best, the broadway version to messy and clumsy, the UK touring version focused more on character and performance and it was as equally enjoyable as on a large set, hey its Starlight!.The German set does have the WOW factor and i will go and see it.(that'll make it 20 times).
The stage and set of Starlight Express on broadway at the Gershwin Theater was HUGE. It had three levels and massive hydraulic bridges. It was so big that the full, live, orchestra had to be on the 3 floor back stage of the Gershwin Theater. They front of the stage went right into the audience and we were literally skating over peoples heads every single night. The broadway set was spectacular in everyway. John Napier should have been nominated for a Tony Award for his set design
Where is Peter Griffin?

Starlight would be loads of fun to do, although difficult to stage. Andrew never ceases to amaze me.

I just wish they would film the 'large set' show and release it on DVD!
rustythestarlight 3 years ago 19
like they did with Cats? You're right, that would be amazing!
milkygoodness 2 years ago
Ah but, the DVD of Cats was amazing, but it was the touring version they filmed! I don't want them to do that with Starlight!
rustythestarlight 2 years ago
Actually Cats that was filmed wasn't touring.....the performers were from productions of it all over the world.
