@Dcaffery8020 i honestly wouldnt buy them from a chain pet store being that they are usually not well socialized and will have many behavioral problems when they grow up i would buy one from a reputable breeder or non chain pet store
LOL they are so adorable when they do this.. @ the poster of this video: It is true that they sometimes get puffy and sway side to side for no apparent reason, He doesn't seem upset and was just feeling the rythm of the dog scratching itself LOL. Kudos to You for telling people how Cockatoos are ALOT of work and a HUGE responsibility not to be taken lightly. It's like having a child with special needs that NEVER grows up!!.
i can't believe people gave you a hard time about him - that he's not really dancing? oh come on people!!! Very good post about the commitment and financial obligations for a large bird.
The only time I have ever seen our Angel do that little dance is when he felt threatened. I've learned that he may perceive something as a threat that I don't recognize as such. And I have the scares to prove it so I never assume otherwise and try to determine what may be upsetting him. Your bird may be the exception and with out my being there to observe I can't tell for sure. But if you ever get bitten when Chewy is doing this, then you know for sure that he is feeling upset about something.
i think that reading a birds body language very much depends on the situation. my too will bob her head rapidly in many different situations--for one to show aggression, but also to show excitement that my mother has come home (whom she has bonded too as her "mate." we are trying to break her of it. but mom feeds her so she already has the upper hand on me. :P)
Man youre lucky that bird didnt bite your hand off. Thats a sign for birds to tell you to get the hell away. My cockatiel does that, and it seemed funny and i reached out to touch her, and she bit me...HARD. Be careful because cockatoos can do way more damage.
That IS a territorial stance. Your lucky he didn't reach over and bite you. I saw my conure doing that once and thought it was cute, next thing I know is that there is a giant bite in my fingerthat is bleeding. So stay away from him when he does that.....
I appareciate your comments on birds, another cost is Vet bills also remember, when I don't play with my bird enough she chews herself apart and I take great care of her, so when the poster says it's a commitment she really means it.
People underestimate the strength of bird's beaks. Even my tiny budgies have managed to pierce through my skin to cause bleeding and it hurts when they do. I can only imagine what a cockatoo would do if he bit me.
That bird is not dancing that is the " Im pissed and Im gonna strut to intimidate you" dance.... probably harmless if he/she is gentle natured but still... My U2 does that if she is near a water spray bottle or that vacume lol
yes, i will save adopting a parrot for when I "settle down" it's more of a commitment than having a child is. they are dependent on you for MUCH LONGER.
gotta say, though, that two separate vets told me that seeds were bad for my birds. told me to only give pellets. it's not true. look up the feeding feathers yahoo group which specializes in bird diet for all birds. it's a fascinating treasure trove of info. more chewey please!
Um BORING!!!!!!!! My bird can dance way better and that isn't even dancing he's scared ....... That's what birds do when they are affraid of someone or something . Sorry but you've got it all wrong . I love birdys!
I have had a U2 for 16 years now. When he does this behavior, it's a warning to back off. They do this to tell someone they consider a threat that they are a bigger threat. Our bird will even hiss like a snake if he doesn't like someone.
@themntornado I've had my Unbrella cockatoo for 8 years. Mine does the same thing that the cockatoo in this video does. Some cockatoos will do this when they feel threatened. But mine does it when he gets really wriled up or excited. It does not always mean they are threatened. But since you and I havent met the cockatoo in the video we cant judge it and say he is threatened.
@sunshine0774820 One of the things that I've learned over the 35 years that I've been raising birds is that what we perceive as a threat and what they perceive as a threat can be quit different. I've seen and even heard from other parrot owners about something is simple and non threatening as changing eye glasses, or fingernail color can be perceived by the bird as a threat. I've even experienced this same thing with horses. When my birds show this reaction, I'm immediately on alert looking.
@themntornado I get that. Im sure most bird when they do what they are doing in the video they feel threatened. But i was just makeing a statement that when my U2 does that he just gets overly excited. I know its not because he is threatened or feels like he is endangered.
I don't personaly think its even because of the dog. watch the video. The dog doesn't even start thumping untill after the '2' starts dancing. He's probably just happy about something, or showing off how pretty he is.
Guys, birds don't puff up all the time for bad reasons. My ducorp cockatoo puffs up when shes cold, playful, cleaning herself, sleeping, and yes sometimes in dancing.
My parrot (african grey) also reacts when i create thumping sounds, he puffs up and often start hitting his beak into e.g the table to create a similar sound.
In a documentary i saw a parrot (in the wild) even used a stick agains a log to create a really loud thumping sound, he also puffed up. According to the documentary the parrot was declaring it his territory. Could be a reason why parrots react when you do this..
I totally hear you about birdies dancing - we have an african grey who certainly does - I wouldn't waste time defending yourself to the non-bird folks amongst us... BUT - your bird is scared in this video -that is scared bird behavior.

My U2 will do something similar, when a person she does not trust (yet) enetrs her view. She'll also do it to music occasionally. When the crest feathers are raised it's usually a sign of stronger emotions (good and bad)
She will also do something I can only describe as a 'head-whip', which I suspect is also more of a warning than a sign of aggression.

Actually while I DO realize that he isn't "dancing" here I do maintain that Chewy does often do this sort of thing for no obvious reason. He may be displaying for territorial purposes but beyond that I don't think that there was anything here that was intimidating him. He's usually a real ham for the camera (see my other videos) and he is very used to the dogs. I reiterate, he may not be "dancing" but it's cute to describe it as such for the purposes of an unimportant noneducational video.
@skie126 First...i DO believe you that he is totally comfortable in his environment -- that is obvious from the other videos. I see he can dance. And i love how he gets to be out of his cage and on a nice playgym.
However, please reconsider your stance and maybe even changing your title because this IS an important video. People watch this, then when their new bird does it, they think it's funny--but their bird is freaking. There are videos on here just like that. Chewy is a role model.

ok listen to the ppl commenting on this video..this is not dancing nor is he enjoying anything that is going on. something is frightening him and he feels the need to try and intimidate whatever it is. it might be the camera..it might be the dog..but that is what a bird does..they puff up to try and look bigger and scarier

Actually there was nothing going on at that point that would have scared him. Chewy is a really well adjusted very friendly bird.. He's very used to the dogs and all people.. He just randomly does things like this. Yes, I realize that he isn't "dancing" and that this is most likely some sort of territorial thing... but the fact that the dog was making the sound at the same time that he did the "dance" made it quite interesting for me.
my umbrella does that, except he doesn't move side to side, and he does that with people he likes too. oh, i have a question for other umbrella owners: is your bird pretty stupid? mine's definitely not the brightest bulb in the box, and i wanted to know if all umbrellas are like that. for example, he LOVES butter. if he sees it open, he goes crazy, but as soon as you shut the container, he'll immediately calm down because he thinks it disappeared or something.
My U2 is very bright. Once he sneezed and then stroked his throat. I asked him if he was ok, and he repiled "Not so good" as he rubbed his throat. A trip to the avian vet disclosed he had a staph infection in his throat and I had to give him shots for a week, which he took from me witout complaint. He is one smart bird!!
ya hes either showing authority or tryin to defend himself..its not dancing:P ...my umbrella does that when new people come into the house that she does not know..
He was displaying himself. He was showing his authority or dominance over something that happened in the room or even over a new toy. I put a rubber ball on my too's cage and he did the same dance for a good 2 or 3 minutes telling the ball that it was his cage. It's on my videos. check it out.
Actually he wasn't angry... he just randomly dances like that and for some strange reason he decided to do that at the exact same moment that my dog began to scratch himself and make the "drum beat" sound in the background.. hehe.
That's a very good description. My babygirl, Fluffy does that when she meets people for the first time. She also does it when a new item is introduced.
Wait, our cockatoo does that to when he's dancing. He doesn't hiss though or anything, but he bounces around while fluffed up like that. So they might not fluff up JUST to intimidate. Though if this one is fluffy because of the dogs them yea I have to agree it might be trying to scare them off with his large mass of fluffyness.
Do you still have your bird. I am looking at purchasing two from petland in Athens Ga....

I signed up just to confirm with you guys that a cockatoo displaying does not mean it is going to attack.
My Too, Jack, does his chicken impersonation (AKA, Displaying) during play.
We actually make the hissing sound together and have a lot of fun.
When Jack is going to bite he gets almond eyes and looks straight at you.
anyway, awesome creatures but please don't get one.
they are a lot of work and need a lifetime commitment.

Chewy is a role model.

haha Chewy is cute. He definatly likes to show off for the camera.

Chewy could very well just be excited....my Umbrella cockatoo does this for:
1. extreme happiness
2. to be silly
3. agression
4. just to do it.
So lighten up people

He was either getting territorial or scared because I don't think he's dancing...sorry
dragonsandthings 3 years ago
Actually while I DO realize that he isn't "dancing" here I do maintain that Chewy does often do this sort of thing for no obvious reason. He may be displaying for territorial purposes but beyond that I don't think that there was anything here that was intimidating him. He's usually a real ham for the camera (see my other videos) and he is very used to the dogs. I reiterate, he may not be "dancing" but it's cute to describe it as such for the purposes of an unimportant noneducational video.

Sorry! My 'too does that too. He is such a show off

ok listen to the ppl commenting on this video..this is not dancing nor is he enjoying anything that is going on. something is frightening him and he feels the need to try and intimidate whatever it is. it might be the camera..it might be the dog..but that is what a bird does..they puff up to try and look bigger and scarier

this is not fun...this umbrella is really scared!!!!!!!!!!!
snipereye1979 3 years ago
Actually there was nothing going on at that point that would have scared him. Chewy is a really well adjusted very friendly bird.. He's very used to the dogs and all people.. He just randomly does things like this. Yes, I realize that he isn't "dancing" and that this is most likely some sort of territorial thing... but the fact that the dog was making the sound at the same time that he did the "dance" made it quite interesting for me.

He obviously doesn't like your dog; that's a defence mechanism.

my umbrella does that, except he doesn't move side to side, and he does that with people he likes too. oh, i have a question for other umbrella owners: is your bird pretty stupid? mine's definitely not the brightest bulb in the box, and i wanted to know if all umbrellas are like that. for example, he LOVES butter. if he sees it open, he goes crazy, but as soon as you shut the container, he'll immediately calm down because he thinks it disappeared or something.

He was displaying himself. He was showing his authority or dominance over something that happened in the room or even over a new toy. I put a rubber ball on my too's cage and he did the same dance for a good 2 or 3 minutes telling the ball that it was his cage. It's on my videos. check it out.

Actually he wasn't angry... he just randomly dances like that and for some strange reason he decided to do that at the exact same moment that my dog began to scratch himself and make the "drum beat" sound in the background.. hehe.

whoaaaaaa that was cool
NomiSnitches 4 years ago
Wait, our cockatoo does that to when he's dancing. He doesn't hiss though or anything, but he bounces around while fluffed up like that. So they might not fluff up JUST to intimidate. Though if this one is fluffy because of the dogs them yea I have to agree it might be trying to scare them off with his large mass of fluffyness.
