It is more about religious iconography and sacred meaning than anything else; also about the battle between the right and left hemispheres. We have an innate duality within us (the two main masks i.e. the Dionysus vs Apollo; or the id vs the superego) that fight over our consciousness. The battle between the two creates a synthesis--an unbiased synthesis of appropriate action (i.e. the referee, ego, third eye). Our hands are the unquestioning followers of either side. A critique of society? Yes.
