I almost didn't watch the whole movie because of the prison rape scene. I couldn't stand it and almost turned it off but I kept watching because people said it's such a good movie.

I also saw how Andy used The Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich too. The SPA did it for him but that was a result of applying steps 1-3.

A friend told me about this movie. I'm surprised I never heard of it before.

Easily one of my top two favorites. Still have trouble deciding between this and Rudy.

If you like inspirational stories like this, of people overcoming all the odds, you should definitely read The Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich. It shows you the natural process of goal achievement and it's really cool when you understand it and go back and watch this movie. You see exactly how Andy used it.

SR didnt serve with anything new. the story itself isnt unique and new enough to deserve the title "best", its a story that is well narrated and that many people want to see. technique, acting performances were good, even very good, but not exceptionally genious. some films that are better (although comparing films is stupid) imo are eg fight club, memento, clockwork orange, requiem for a dream, ... dont get me wrong, SR is still ONE OF the best films ever, but id be cafeful with "the best".

But none of those films compare

with Shawshank nor are they "exceptionally genious" (I acutually laughed out loud when I read that).. Nice try though? You would've a been better off using Godfather 2, Taxi Driver, or Silence of the Lambs.

as i said, in my opinion. there are many movies that are better than SR. its just my personal taste to choose these movies out of those who are better. fight club is not overrated, its just that hard and brilliant that most people wont understand it. you need to watch it 5+ times to fully get everything.

This is a movie that doesnt need to be watched a tedious 5 times (though i would do it willingly), it's great, it's a classic, and can entertain on a mental and not visual level which most movies dont bother to do in these modern age of sequels and remakes.

Its not on the list of AFI's top 100 list of the century while Shawshank is rated 72

I'd rather watch this emotional, humorous, and dramatic movie (Narrated by Morgan Freeman XD) than a movie about physical violence

I think it retrospect it's a tad embarrassing that Forrest Gump beat out both Shawshank and Pulp Fiction to win the best picture Oscar. It wasn't a bad film, but not in the same class as the other two films, which were arguably the two definitive, and best, films of the decade.

Every single scene in this movie is a classic. Every line spoken by Morgan Freeman is an example of amazing acting and brilliant dialogue-writing. It boggles my mind to this day how Shawshank could have ever lost Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor as well as the Best Supporting Actor Oscars?!

And yes, Shawshank Redemption is THE greatest film of all time.

I first saw pulp fiction, and i was stunned. I thought movie making just cannot be better. i thought it was outragous to give the oscar to forrest gump. i was rite, but it should not have been given to pulp in my opinion, but to this. it friggin fluctuates on #1 of best films on IMDB with godfather. RESPECT! this, the scene where they first show the prison, the end scene, and when the warden finds he escaped are my favourite scenes ofthe movie( possibly any movie).
