The (ridiculous) Humbert of the movie is not a pederast because Lolita is played by a probably 16 yo girl (who is not a nymphet as Nabokov would have intended). Those creatures are beautiful only for an "artist and madman, a creature of infinite melancholy, with a bubble of hot poison in his loins"...Basically, certain beautifully perverse aesthetes. In a plain movie which just plays it safe, -opposite of the book- they couldn't represent the reality. Lolita should look much younger that that.

@marzomarshall I Agree. I though Nabokov was mocking on the suburbian middle class american people, their society of the plastics and seemingly perfect lifes. The plot that seems to wants the reader to like H.H even if in real life you must likely hate him; shows not at all ethical situations as if they were right. The content and subject matter is so disturbing But the actors are wonderful, the directing, and the cinematography is awesome. I'm relieved the actress isn't underage or I don't think I could stomach the touchy feely and naked scenes. Kinda like Mysterious Skin.

This is a really fucked up take on the novel, turning a story of tragedy into soft core porn, acted out by a girl who looks 18+. Amazing how a novel initially rejected by most american publishers for being too lewd has turned into something like this; blatant hypocrisy. This book was beautiful and honestly it is shameful to see it acted out like this, Nabakov is rolling in his grave.
Haven't read the novel, so I'm not sure how to take the other critique. But come on, it still focuses quite a bit on the tragic aspect of their relationship.
1997's Lolita was trying to be as literally faithful to the novel as possible. Irons played Humbert with pathos, humility and psychological-lewdness all at once.
We have to take into account that there was NO fathomable way the studios would allow the casting of a real 12 year old girl for Lolita. Dominique Swan captured the essence of the girl, though not as completely as Irons did Humbert. Still, for a movie that was so difficult to produce, Lyne and the actors did a very admirable job.

This is a really fucked up take on the novel, turning a story of tragedy into soft core porn, acted out by a girl who looks 18+. Amazing how a novel initially rejected by most american publishers for being too lewd has turned into something like this; blatant hypocrisy. This book was beautiful and honestly it is shameful to see it acted out like this, Nabakov is rolling in his grave.

1997's Lolita was trying to be as literally faithful to the novel as possible. Irons played Humbert with pathos, humility and psychological-lewdness all at once.
We have to take into account that there was NO fathomable way the studios would allow the casting of a real 12 year old girl for Lolita. Dominique Swan captured the essence of the girl, though not as completely as Irons did Humbert. Still, for a movie that was so difficult to produce, Lyne and the actors did a very admirable job.
