put that volvo against any new car factory brand new the volvo would win nothing against renault they are fantastic but when it comes to reliability volvo wins hands down the germans wont beat swedish!
The signs appear that the Volvo as a synonym for safety seriously sucks compared to the small plastic Renault extremely short front. It just does not make sense but ok, Volvo is still better.
Lolz looked like the clutz french snail was going faster, meaning more velocity and less damage... I dunno, these tests never seem fair. There was one with a land rover and it already had underbody damage or something but they didn't say on camera. Still would way prefer the Volvo considering how cheap they are to buy.
volvo 940 is an extreme good car for modification. the chassis is build so that you can install an am car V8 engine... so basically you can have a 5.8L hemi engine. and the chassis is galvanized so it wound rust.
Aunque sea menos seguro.
How can this be possible?? The little, dumb Renault is more safe than the Volvo?! When I saw this the first time last year, I thought that the Volvo was much more safe than the little Renault?! I'm surprised, how can this be possible?
2) The Volvo 940 has a longitudinal engine and rear-wheel drive. This means that apart from the bumper, there is practically nothing but air in front of the driver (which is why some people incorrectly believe that there was no engine in the Volvo). The Renault Modus has a transverse engine with front-wheel drive, so the engine / gearbox assembly absorbed at least some of the energy. The Volvo would have fared better (though still not as well as the Renault) in a head-on collision.
@HateIronMaiden Because car safety has moved forwards a lot since this Volvo was made BTW The Volvo 940 is just a re-skinned 740, So its design dates back to the early 1980,s. AND THEY KNEW THIS (This is why this car was choosen) If they had used a slighly newer Volvo like the 850 (Which came out in 1992) I think it would have been about 50/50.
it's not a serious test. The no engine car is not a real car. I don't say that old Volvo is safe, that's not true, but this test is not serious anyway
watch the video on full screen, pause it and you can actually click on a frame at 7:10 (while paused, just beofre the guy puts his hand before the camera) and you can clearly see the head of the engine and the manifold, among with the rest of the engine that has been pushed on the left side.
there was no engine. so, volvo's crumple zone was actually air. The volvo's safety cage done extremely well. it haven't deformed very much actually if you realize that it had to do job from both the modus (pathetic) and volvos(missing) crumple zones.
if the crash was full front with an engine, volvo's front would have probably crumpled to 2/3. and safety cage would be intact. and volvo would probably push modus another 10 meters from the collision spot.
This test doesn't tell us anything. The big front of the Volvo cushioned the Modus in the collision. What do you think would happen if two Moduses would go head to head instead..?
Renault is the safest car in the world, so get over your little Volvo-is-strong-and-safe-romance and buy the safer car. So why even bother claiming that the volvo has no engine aboard and they hit the volvo on a bad area. That bullshit!
god dam they hit the volvo on the weak spot. do a head on not on left or right side no volvo survived that exept new ones and u see there is nothing left of that french shit. and still that old 940 is still 1 safe car
I've crashed in a Volvo 740. My family was in the car as well. The front crumbled, just like it's supposed to do, absorbing the energy. Nobody was injured. I got another 740 the next day.
What happens in the test is that the Volvo absorbs the energy from *both* cars.
I'm so disappointed the Volvo did so poorly. I think the Volvo driver would be dead, most likely from head injuries. the steering shaft acted like a battering ram and was shoved right into the dummy's face as his head was propelled forward by the crash. That's bad news in any car. My Mom has a '95 940 and it makes me sick to think of this being her car. And this was only at 40mph! All of the roads around here are 45mph-70mph. Scary thoughts.
On 2:23 I can say this. I dont want seet in these cars. Because it is 40 mph + 40 mph So it is 80 mph, and car are tested on 40 mph. So this is double speed, and noone wants to be inside!!
OK, smart Modus body, but how about DECELERATION ?
The M has a shorter deformable front (say 0,7m against 2m). However, both cars decelerate about equally, thanks to the V long and soft front ! From cinetics we get: ~13G.
But in the other following scenarios, we get (40mph) :
V/V crash (or V into a wall..): 16G
M/M crash (...): 47G !...
If I ever «walked out» the Modus, my kids at the rear
This is true. Renault used Volvo's front end and had longer deceleration path than it would be the case of two same Renaults crashed, because they have less space for deformation. The rule is SIMPLE: THE MORE SPACE FOR DEFORMATION (absorbing energy) - THE MORE SAFE CAR IS! Of course, driver's space should not deform...

Unfair test obviously! How about testing a newer Volvo from the same age as the Renault. Or better yet, a older Renault from the same age as the Volvo. That Renault would be pulverized. Anyway, it's a interesting test. This colllision is something that could actually happen in real life. But it is subjective, clearly. Always by a newer car, it's worth it!
LOL. It's not square on collision because there are MUCH more head on collisions like this one was: driver's sides on.
For those that are blindly defending Volvo (I have nothing against Volvo, It WAS probably the safest car of HIS time), take a look at some NEW pick up trucks...TRUCKS. They are BIG, MEAN...but they mostly SUCK at NCAP Crash tests.
I think this is a typical TopGear "let's distort the facts to get a story". Have a look at the front of the Volvo after the crash. Can you see any engine in the car? I can't. Of course the Modus is better built for safety but if you take something as massive and solid as the engine out of the Volvo then it's going to skew the results hugely towards the Modus. TopGear is great for entertainment but poor on objectivity.
The bigger the car the MORE likely you will be involved in a crash - after all even if it's "not your fault" you are a BIGGER target and will find it nigh impossible to take sufficient avoiding action - the availbale gaps being too small.
Anyway that's not a matter of brand but a matter of car generation. Any new car (except Chinese :-) would have better behaved than an ancient one. They picked up an old Volvo only because of its reputation to be tough...

mala suerte. El volvo cubico no es tan seguro como el modus, pues nada, ya habran mejorado con los años, eso si, renault ha hecho un gran esfuerzo para que un coche de 3.78m sea muy seguro y rigido.
still sort of surprised me, as volvo is known to be 'ahead of time' when it comes to safety. On the other hand, it's a good thing progress goes so fast in the right direction.
Newer cars are safer than old cars that is a fact. The modus has 5 ncap stars for a reason. The engine hasn't been removed from the Volvo either.

At least two factors I can think of offhand:
1) The Renault Modus has the advantage of almost 15 years of safety research and development over the Volvo 940.
(continued in a separate comment due to YouTube's 500-character limit)
dedcs 2 years ago
2) The Volvo 940 has a longitudinal engine and rear-wheel drive. The Renault Modus has a transverse engine with front-wheel drive, so the engine / gearbox assembly absorbed at least some of the energy. The Volvo would have fared better (though still not as well as the Renault) in a head-on collision.
