  • gifted with the skills of timing specific movements. Incredible is an understatement

  • sick skills man, i dont like the song though not at all

  • @Scuubs27 wtf

  • Thats a Boss Delay like a DD-7 and a Boss Reverb pedal. Not a metal zone.

  • it looks like he is using a boss ge-7 and metalzone. That would explain how he is able to make his guitar sound so percussive.

  • @slingshotmcoy You try makin five beats a day!

    -Aziz Ansari

  • I've been wanting this guy to come play in my town for years yet it seems like he's been everywhere but :(

  • Chuck Norris came to this guy begging for guitar lessons.

  • I'm really digging(no pun intended) the ting Yang fret dots

  • Awesome!

  • FOR SHORT, ILLUMINATI MUSIC ARE SEVERELY TAKING OVER ON THEIR HEADS :((

  • What are those foot switches! I would LOVE to have those for my acoustic guitar!! Does anybody have a clue what they are??

  • @SuperZack94 check his sight

  • @SuperZack94 *site. lol

  • The most underrated guitarist ever and to me our time's greatest artist.

  • how could anyone dislike this?

  • Sounds just like the tone Michael Hedges used to play with! Love it!

  • 8 People are high.

  • @Bosnmayt Correction, 8 people need to get high.

  • his hand looks like a beautilful butterfly. erik's hand movements looks like... just amazing.. when i first heard this song.. i just hook up.. this mood.. and rythym.. just amazing.

  • promote his music then

  • popularity has nothing to do with talent.

  • wish they would make hip hop, rap and all that shit illegal

  • @SpAcEmOnKeY126 mainstream* rap illegal

  • who ever dislike the song ...is retarded..LOL try to play like that !

  • worthier than hearing the fuckin' bieber songs (y)

  • People ask why these amazing guitarists are not winning awards and why the generic artists of our generation is winning them. It's because that's what we've created for ourselves. This music is raw and full of passion. We are not. WE reflect EVERYTHING that is going on around us. The music, t.v., and anything in between is our fault. Deal with it and enjoy this music. Greet it and welcome it. :)

  • @WhiteKnuckles24 Truth. Although, in my book, folks like Erik, Kaki, Andy, they win awards. While rappers go unnoticed.

  • He is actually more than a genius

  • Bad ass

  • i had the pleasure of playing with erik in 2008, it was the most inspiring thing to listen to him play, compositionally and technically hes a wizard, and the guy is so chilled with it and so much heart and soul in his performance. inspiring legend.

    chris woodford

  • I just love his sound.

  • I don't really care about how you create your music as long as it comes from your heart.

  • Somehow I keep coming back to this video and forget I've commented on it before. The guy is a legend. Heart and soul *thumps chest*

  • I learnt that he uses AADF#AA tuning for "Fusion".

How many guitars does he use on a set? What string gauges does he use? Does he use the high B string from a 6 string bass?

How does he keep the neck from warping?

  • Magical hands are what this man has. I wonder what its like to be so far ahead of the pack in terms of creativity and just look back at everybody else trying to catch up.

  • It pisses me off hip hop artists and R&B stars get all the awards for best songs when their "Music" is computer generated sounds that take no skill to compose or make.

  • @slingshotmcoy You should try making a good sounding beat from scratch and you'd appreciate how difficult it is. Don't get me wrong, I play Erik's music whenever I pick up a guitar and agree with you on a lot of what you said, but if you tried making one, you'd be surprised how difficult and head-wrecking it can be.

  • @barrywalsh789

I have to agree with that.

I play guitar, didge, drums etc.. but also like to play around with electronica too.

People overlook the fact that the synths don't create a track all on their own.

You still have to have some musical ability or at the very least,a good ear and a sense of rythm.

Besides which... ALL Muisic is good if it makes someone happy !!

Apart from boy bands... they don't count.:0)~

Only kidding... not my cup of tea, but the wee girlies like em !!

  • @barrywalsh789 actually making a beat depends on the software you use. with the software most producers use now a days its pretty damn simple. i know this cause i have logic pro 9 and it makes making a beat as easy as working at my computer for a day or two. but anyways theres no doubt that erik deserves way more recognition then the hardly talented artists like kesha on the radio who just make music as vulgar and perverted as possible and has her beats made for her. Erik keeps music sacred.

  • @barrywalsh789 I think it's more a question of artistic appreciation he refers to. You have some computer whizz kid who makes the beats for the track and then they throw down some pathetic lyrics and boom! You have a number 1 hit single. Erik summons a masterpeice from his soul and not so much as a fraction of the commercial music community pay attention to its beauty. Snoop dropping it like it's hot can suck my plumbs! Pardon my French-Canadian

  • @mikemoseley It depends really on which electronic music we're referring to. If it's the likes of Will.I.Am or Jason Derulo who are incapable of coming up with a decent, original song that earns our time and 99c, without auto-tune or sampling, then I 100% agree. But if it's someone like Daft Punk or Calvin Harris, I don't. Not all electronic music made on computers is lazy. I've a friend who writes it for independent video games, and he's more musical than I am, (and he likes Erik Mongrain ;)

  • @barrywalsh789 It takes patience, not practice. Erick and other guitarists had to devote several years to get even a small understanding of the guitar. Making beats just takes lots of trial and error, and is something anyone can physically do.

  • @slingshotmcoy There's no way Erik wrote Airtap without trial and error, haha. I get what your saying, but there IS more work put into these "beats" than even I'd like to admit.

But that's besides the point, the majority of it is still terrible, in my opinion

  • @mikemoseley I need not further this debate. You are on the same wave length. I love Daft Punk and Calvin Harris but there really is some terrible content making it to number 1 nowadays! :(

  • @barrywalsh789 "You should try making a good sounding beat from scratch and you'd appreciate how difficult it is." Uh, no offense but... are you f'n retarded? Looping a beat is literally the easiest "musical" creating ANYONE can do with absolutely zero musical talent whatsoever. I have 2 music programs right now, and I'd bet you anything I could sit my 6-year-old nephew down and have him making (pop-worthy) beats in less than a day... hell, maybe less than an hour.

  • @DarthMohammed Wow! somebody's aggressive!

Alright so Mr. Smarty-pants, post me the link when he has it done.

And for your information, I can play most of Erik Mongrain's songs (including 2 of his yet unreleased songs) on the guitar myself, and gave up when I tried to use Fruity-loops. Just couldn't get my head around it

  • @barrywalsh789 Ok, ya got me, there.

It may require a bit of technical know-how and familiarity with whatever program one uses. But it's still easier than actually learning to play ANY real instrument. And on most music programs, the easiest thing to do is looping beats. Bass lines... not too bad. Guitar riffs, especially acoustic, and other "melodies"... now that's quite a bit harder, in comparison to just making beats. But it still requires a lot less talent than "playing" an instrument.

  • @DarthMohammed Yeah I get what your saying, alright. I just think saying anyone can write electronic music doesn't really make sense, cause anyone could play the guitar too. It's doing it well that's the difference. Surely there's someone as talented as Erik with writing electronic music. Just a pity there's so few of them...

  • @barrywalsh789 But the thing is, the popular hip-hot artists now don't have good sounding beats in the first place. Now they just pay some guy more than my car is worth to write 4 bars of "something", repeat it through the whole song, and then "write" lyrics that the artist thinks is somehow (a loose use of the word) 'catchy'.

  • @slingshotmcoy while i agree with you about the awards point, i challenge you to compose a "computer generated" song that sounds anything near listenable. BTW, this guy is beyond awards!!!

  • @slingshotmcoy You'll have to get used too it! D: Popular music nowadays is more industry than art, it pisses me off too. I will listen to anything as long as I can appreciate the skill, thought and time put into from Death metal to punk, hard rock to blues, jazz to real rap bands (Rap is meant to be poetry with a beat in my opinion) And it does piss me off when autotune stars get billions for writing such disgraceful music.

  • @slingshotmcoy D --> Just letting you know, it really isn't that hard at all. Making beats is simple for the right kind of person. Anyway, I get what you mean. There is a lot of shit out there. Erik Mongrain, Buckethead, Animals as Leaders, Antoine Defour, Andy Mckee, El Ten Eleven, etc. . All e%ceptional musicians, but probably don't get credit just because they are instrumental and untraditional. Most people that listen to the radio are kids with easy to influence minds and don't want talent.

  • @slingshotmcoy This is a bad generalisation and you should feel bad. It's just as hard to compose music with a computer as it is with an instrument, and most people use instruments to create the melodies in computer made music anyways.

It's just that a few artists do rip off other shit and don't use skill to compose but there are a lot of good electronic artists who compose on computer that you aren't crediting. Like what Barrywalsh said about Daft Punk :P

  • @slingshotmcoy I know what you mean, but careful what you wish for. I don't think I would like for artists like Erik Mongrain or Antoine Dufour to get exposed to the public because they would be all the craze. I think it's best for artists like this to stay out of the public eye, publicity can do more harm than good.

  • @slingshotmcoy I had this exact debate some time back on another of his videos I think your absolutely right. It is a categoric tragedy. Some kid makes a song in a day on his pc and gets millions. Erik pours his soul, his everything into a composition and the world barely notices. It's not even the people who make bad music I'm angry at. It's the people who refuse to listen. Peope are stupid as hell!

  • @mikemoseley you sir are retarded , have you ever tried to make music through your computer? i tell you this much it takes hours just to get the right sound you want , and then more hours to even be creative , and more hours to align everything and make sure its on time and sounds together , gosh you are retarded thinking that just because its made on a computer its easy you dumb fuck

  • @slingshotmcoy ACTUALLY it's fucking hard to make good beats i would love for you to try making just a drum beat that wasn't monotonous

  • @FadedSTEELERSfan Keyword kiddo, drums

Yeh its hard, cause its an instrument that requires practice. I said techno beats using a computer, not actual drums. Drums takes just as much practice as this to master.

  • @slingshotmcoy Don't forget they don't even generate the songs...they just autotune their shitty lyrics over top of them

  • @slingshotmcoy Whining white people. Not a bad band name.

  • @slingshotmcoy Really, that statement is really not correct. Most of the music they use, is actually hard to make. but it doesn't sound that way. But yea, i agree.. It's annoying that they aren't being compared to guys like Erik Mongrain, Justin King, Tommy Emmanuel and Eric Clapton...

This world needs a revolution in the form of music.

  • @slingshotmcoy as much as i love this guy i find it insulting that you would say that about hiphop it takes just as much emotion and hardship as this if you are a true mc you will sacrefice anything to make it dont get me wrong i absalutly love erik mongrains music i think he is amazing but dont be too quick to judge i mean this talent is alot easier to sell than hiphop so for an mc like me who cant evin find a place that will take a second glance at my style of music let alone hear my

  • @slingshotmcoy my style of music let alone hear my trax it is hard and any awards are well earned im not talking new school hiphop though that sucks balls im talking true mcing old school, horrorcore and political peace and love =)

  • @ashindecosta The point i constantly try to make is yes, it takes work to come up with all that stuff. But the huge difference is that after all the time a hip hop artist takes to make their music, they hit a few buttons and let it play. Erik's sound takes years and years of practice to do, let alone create.

And im not saying anything about oldschool, all of the old stuff is good, but modern hiphop artists that get awards just frustrates me

  • @slingshotmcoy Don't be dense. Production, beat making, and composing are difficult, no matter what medium you use.

  • @slingshotmcoy "mainstream" music takes no skill. there's hip hop out there that has masterful beats and poetic lyricism. although erik's music still takes more skill of course. he's insane

  • he totally smokes Peter Jackson blues :D

  • @shredtk My friend actually sold him a pack after the show in quebec haha

  • I would sell my soul to the devil to play like this

  • @HerbalNinja024 Ha this is what happens when you sell your soul to the devil. Notice the pentagrams in the corner on half of his videos.

  • @HerbalNinja024 Actually i think you need your soul to play like that...

  • Funny, one guy with one guitar sounds so much better than most musical "groups" out there.

  • look at his hand at the beginning...it looks like its double joining every way XD

  • my favourite acoustic player.

  • Comment removed

  • I wish this guy was my teacher, but I could only dream of playing this stuff, not to mention the cash for getting a custom made guitar like his, hahaha.

  • Amazing!

  • From the First Chord.....

I knew we were going somewhere else...

  • This plus rainymood (d0t) com is amazing.

  • anyone know the tuning on this one?

  • i have the official tab of this song bought from erik mongrain's website

    message me if you need

  • John Martin would have loved this

  • i can't deside wether this song or "A Ripple Effect" is my favorite, they're both so awesome.

  • Why don't music awards ever go out to people who ACTUALLY deserve them? Kesha, kanye west, justin fucking beiber... all of these untalented morons get millions of dollars and national fame, while geniuses go unnoticed and unnappreciated. Fuck stupid people.

  • @BruceLeDouche I hate people as well and i feel the same way brotha.

  • @BruceLeDouche But if musicians like Erik became your average mainstream artist, then wouldn't people scorn him well for selling out and producing "mainstream" music? In my honest opinion, I believe he should remain a mystery to the common public so that venturing musicians can seek out true music and quest to find true musicians like Erik. Only true musicians should listen to true music (such as this) because they're the only ones who truly understand it. Just knowing about Erik is good enough.

  • @BruceLeDouche its because 90% of the general populous requires that music have 3 things: a beat they can dance to, a hook they can sing a long with, and someone to flood the media with their terrible music.

  • @BruceLeDouche : You said it !!

  • @BruceLeDouche hey you cant call them morons for making millions obviously they are doing something right.... erik is talented i just hope he plays in L.A soon......... and dont ever talk shit bout JUSTIN BEIBER you get man handle for that shit ha!!!

  • @BruceLeDouche

    oh yes :(

"Fuck stupid people" ... Fuck humanity -.- !

  • @BruceLeDouche I know what you mean, but I'm actually happy that Erik Mongrain doesn't get a lot of widespread attention. People who truly love music go searching for it themselves. We didn't learn about Erik Mongrain from watching some stupid segment on MTV, (not that I completely hate MTV). Think of it this way: Justin Bieber performed a song where he "attempted" to use Lap-playing technique similar to E.M. Would you like if more people used it in mainstream music..and failed at it?

  • @BruceLeDouche in all honestly justin bieber does have musical skill and talent but the music he produces is just shitty pop he could have been a amazing guitarist but i mean how can u resist 100million+ a year

  • @parkourislife123 In all honesty, Erik's right thumb has more talent than Justin Bieber.

  • @BruceLeDouche Some musicians who are virtuosos don't always want national fame. Some just wants to be in the enviroment they are at the present time in their life.

  • @BruceLeDouche THIS is just how superficial people are...it sucks....all just a bunch of lambs counting bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums

  • Comment removed

  • @BruceLeDouche

the sad thing is, that the most people are blind...They dont recognize genuises. They are overfloated by the Mainstream. But you know what? Im sure that someday the "pure" music is about to break through this wall of stupidity. Excuse my bad english.

    Odorwyn

  • @BruceLeDouche C'mon dude how are you supposed to win an award of that nature with out any autotune, you are just not being realistic

  • @iamajames That better be sarcasm -.-

  • At the begining, he was playing in the street....and in the subway....he learned by himself....this guy has a real talent!

  • what a bad ass snare drum effect!

  • doin' music is just translate what you see to another language (sounds), some people have complicated feelings or images from this world, the result are great musics

  • It's like he is expressing so much...sorrow...or...sadness...or...it's almost gut wrenching to watch. This moved me.

  • Anybody who thinks Erik is using loops is dead wrong. I've seen him play most of his repertoire acoustically, meaning not plugged in, and there you hear it : everything done there with his fingers. There lies the magic of his craft. He dwells in polyphony, interspersed with rhythm. He is a great composer. Not a subproduct of Michael Hedges, but a sublimation of him, something altogether new, with a touch and vision all his own. Don't even try to think badly of him. You don't even come close.

  • First time I heard Airtap, my ears perked up

Because I thought I'd discovered a lost Michael Hedges tune. Erik's a fine player, but I'll stick with the original....

  • @Chernabog66 it's just unfair to compare anyone to Michael LOL

  • @barrywalksh789 For some reason I can't find a link to buy the DVD on Erik's website. Since it is assumed that the video is out of production, would you mind sharing the entire concert?

  • @ClassicTracks2 That would be because the "DVD" doesn't exist. These videos were on Erik's page when the Equilibrium album was being launched. I ripped it from the website and posted them here because they didn't have them up on YouTube at that time. I do not hae the rest of it anymore, I deleted it as it was mostly tuning/setting up, if I remember right....

  • he is his guitar.

  • you are an idiot if you think this is bad music you should have respect for this guy he is awesome !!!!!

  • if einstein or newton had a guitarr, they have did this song

  • is this a baritone guitar?? great sound altought

  • @joeyrockplayer No, it's just a custom-made guitar that I'm guessing he made to have a strong bass. Plus he tunes the strings down and uses a bass EQ to boost the bass a lot more.

  • @joeyrockplayer i got a simular sound with medium strings and an LRbaggs pickup rigged through a behringer preamp :)

  • @joeyrockplayer @barrywalsh789 if you check his website he responds to everyone. He plays large body guitars made of composites with wood tops sometimes without wood at all for his sound. He doesnt always tune down either almost every song is a different tuning.

  • He feels every single fucking note he plays.

  • EU SEMPRE QUE VEJO OS VIDEOS DESTE CARA ... ME DA VONTADE DE SONHAR!!!!

MUITO OBRIGADO POR EXISTIR ERIK MONGRAIN. UM DIA AINDA VOU TER O PRIVILÉGIO DE VER -LO FAZER ESTA MAGICA AO VIVO.

    SALVE ERIK MONGRAIN!!!

  • Holy God. That was truly amazing.

  • Looping is cheating? Haphazart, that just makes you sound ignorant.

    ..... Man I really want a looper.

    AWESOME SONG!!!

  • Erik knows how to write a fucking song!

  • Sounds like he has wicked low action on his guitar :D I love it!

  • is that all the drum and base we hear is made by him on the guitar?

  • @sammiiboyy everything u hear is made by him and his guitar, yes

  • The technique is incredible, and better yet, how can you write stuff like that?

    Erik is cool.

  • im in love with him

  • *SandNigger

  • *Sandnigger

  • A Modern Paganini on Guitar

  • I'm not sure what you guys are fussing about, but I agree that these artists need better recordings to better capture their talent.

  • Best Mongrain song!

  • erik....when can we jam??? seriously!!!! let me know asap!!!!

  • He truly has made some beautiful music. I love when people just let go and create something. The end result is almost always amazing. It truly is art.

  • you can not compare art. He has a gift. Just relax and enjoy it. beautiful

  • @strongself37 He not only has a gift, he IS a gift.

  • Equilibrissime ?!!

  • brilliant!

  • currently this is my favorite song, and has been since equilibrium came out! What a wonderful composition!

  • Erik has always had an undertone of Michael Hedges in his music. Mainly in that the music itself is more important than the talent it takes to play it. Musicians like this can not be appreciated or understood properly until you can play their music. The subtleties play a larger part than the what stand out. Any master level player could play this, but to the naked ear attempting all barely audible flare notes that are crammed into songs like these is what makes them so amazing, and difficult.

  • Whats better Apples or oranges.

  • I dont think musicians like andy Mckee and Erik should be compared, I do like erik mongrain a lot but andy mckee is still amazeing, they do play a similar style but the way they use the techniques and structure their songs is different and thats what makes them unique, they both take you on a journey.

  • that's how i feel whenever im playing... alone and in the dark.. the most peaceful place you could possibly be.. I love playing the guitar it brings me to another place

  • He does a great job, no doubt about it, but I can't feel his music. After listening to Andy Mckee and Don Ross for so long, nothing can really compare.

  • dude.. you compare him to don ross and Andy. they all have a different style.

  • @candacelynn Hope you're not referring to Erik Mongrain..? I actually think Erik is the most innovative and creative guitarist today...To me, after listening to Erik Mongrain, nothing else can compare.

  • Gotta edit my statement. I don't want to give the impression that there are no guitarists that compare to Erik. After all, Don Ross is Don Ross. He's a legend. And Andy Mckee has incredible feeling in his melodies...but give credit where it's due...Erik is definitely one of the best guitarists there ever was.

  • dude he is so much more complex without sacrificing feeling. andy mckee is overrated imo.

  • andy mckee is like the grand daddy. But Erik Mongrain and Antoine Dufour take it to the next level

  • 2 quebecer :) ahaha

  • Agree

  • Loved Chris Surma. Thanks Mr barrywalsh789! He didn't compromise the quality of his writing even with the use of technique. Reminded me a lot of Chapman stick performers. Thanks again!

  • for suure mckee is overrated and erik is underrated

  • The truth is, spending time talking about overrated and underrated is a waste of time. I know probably a dozen players who play circles around any of these youtube "stars" and by that logic they'd be grossly underrated. So what, does he play well? yeah! So... cool!

  • thats i know, but that bother me.. peaples keep putting everything in competition.

  • So you should stop... if it bothers you.

  • yeah, sure you know a dozen players better than these guys

  • Ability to play and ability to compose are different spectrums of the same art. Ultimately composition makes the song more than the ability. I'd like to hear some of the music written by the uber dozen+ you speak. If It's better than any of the aforementioned solo acoustic "youtube" stars, I'm sure we can get those people you know famous as well. Put them on youtube.

  • Haha, you're sure you can make them famous? You don't know anything about the music industry. That's not how it works.

  • No didn't think that at all. however, if it did work that way for the dozens of Candy Ratters, Eric Mongrain, and others. Why not try? In reality, I just wanted to hear the genius of the musicians you were talking about. I know dozens of guitarists that may be able to technically play better than them, however, they don't write nearly as well. So, again, put up some videos of the Dozen+'s original music. I'm curious to hear the sound of superiority.

  • Comment removed

  • Have a listen to Chris Surma. Sure it's complicated stuff but if you can listen to the likes of 'Nightshade' properly, you'll see it's an amazing composition, and it's one song that hasn't got the attention it deserves imo...

  • @barrywalsh789 Surma cheats, he loops himself ! His compositions are still very beautiful, but where solo guitar is concerned, looping is cheating :P Let alone Kaki King who does amazing stuff.

  • @Haphazart Cheats?? Music shouldn't be about how complicated you can make it. My favourite song ever is 'Any Other Name' by Thomas Newman BECAUSE it's so simple, but really powerful. Is Erik Mongrain more skilled than Chris Surma? Maybe, but that doesn't change the fact he wrote great music.

And if Chris is "cheating", would it not be the same with Erik seeing as he has a bassist in some of his songs??

  • @barrywalsh789 Okay, the word cheating might be a little harsh. I concur. Except the beauty that lies in fingerstyle guitar is, to me, an amalgam of immaculate technique, tremendous feeling and the quality of the composition and the ability to combine all these and harmonize them. Don't get me wrong, Surma's tune are rich & I find them very moving. Though looping yourself brings you closer, somehow I guess, to sampling parts of songs and putting them together in a studio/recording software.

  • @barrywalsh789 simple is not a reason to like a song people don't like Erik mongrain's music because its complicated but because his melody is nice that it creates a mood and a lyrics for its self and such talent and ability cant be recognized by the simpleminded, and also you cant cheat in music for it is not purposed for competition and there is no rule book on how to play music so you cant really cheat.

  • @shneider123456 That's not what I meant. What I mean is, that song I mentioned really impresses me BECAUSE it creates a strong mood, even though it's so simple. If you listen to the song, you'll probably understand. I'm a big fan of Erik, I was just saying to Haphazarat that a song doesn't have to be based on skill alone. Sometimes, the better composer can be the one who can convey what they're trying to say in as few notes as possible, and it doesn't have to be about playing everything at once.

  • @barrywalsh789 ah man you should check out some Joe Haisashi if you feel that way. My favorites are reprise, one summer's day, and always with me. Perfect example of someone who can convey emotion with the right progressions, nuances, and touch.

  • @Haphazart she does cool shit and she uses a loop so a born cheater aparently in your eyes erik kills her no contest

  • It's not cheating. It's music. Music isn't about how it's made; it's about how it sounds.

  • @Haphazart Loops cheating ae? So are you saying that Michael Hedges is a cheat because he loops on the song "Spare Change". You're probably just some August Rush fan boy who doesn't appreciate the real deal.

  • @Haphazart There is no law in music, there's no cheating (besides lip-syncing), music is freedome and if he wants to loop to express a certian feeling than he can, it doesn't make him any less talented.

  • @Haphazart Shut the fuck up kid if you dont his pedals... how do you know hes using a loop? Well i know hes not using one i saw the 3 pedals he use is noise supressor, well a preamp and a boss fender bassman pedal... By the way Kaki King suck, her only good song is Bari Improv and its just so easy...

  • anybody know what brand his guitar is?

  • It's a custom made kingslight. you can find out more about it on his website
