@Jkw718 Different voice, but there was an old recording set. I'm in the process of making a second video like this, and you can find it there. Interestingly, the announcements for the 5 shared the same station name recordings with the other lines it ran with. That is until a new recording set took its place.
The first days when they had multiple voices doing one announcements. Perfect example at 138th St. Honestly, these do sound better in my opinion. And Jessica sounds a little more mild too. Thanks a lot for posting (even though I am super late)!
The automated announcements on MBTA buses in Boston suffered a much worse fate. The original female voice used to be very friendly and conveyed a lot of information. Here's an example: "Porter Square - transfer to 83, 96, Red Line, and Commuter Rail". Sometime in 2005, the MBTA switched to a dull male voice that is unfriendly and very brief. The same announcement was changed to "Porter Square - bus, subway, and commuter rail connection".
Nope, those are actual recordings of people making the announcements. If it were a TTS app, it would likely mispronounce some station names like Houston Street.
lol, i know what you mean. this is an example of a TTS app mispronouncing a word but it would be funny if there was a street named crotch street and the MTA used microsoft sam's voice for the announcments. chances, microsoft sam would something like this- "this station is crowsnest street" instead of saying "this station is crotch street"
i know its a bad example but thats the only one i could think of.
I call it Eighth Avenue Express, after the subway line I first saw it on (R110B cars 3007~3009 originally had this type of character block). The LCD displays in the Amtrak portion of Penn Station also use these, so I just took a picture of the character block and traced from that. The font is not currently available for download.
You are so right...thats why I don't like her announcements on the 5 line. They need to convert it back to Melissa Kleiner b/c she sounded much better and quieter!
The one problem with that would be: Melissa Kliner/Diane Thompson alternation (in Manhattan, it would be Melissa Kleiner/ Jessica Ettinger Gottesman alternation).
lol love it... upload more

I liked Melissa Kliner's announcements. I wish they would have kept them.

I still don't understand why they removed Melissa Kleiner-Cohen's announcements on the 5.

Did the 2 train have these "old" announcements too?

The new voices sound meaner because they are annuciating more - Wow, you gotta LOVE the Python intro LOL!

I like Ettinger Gottesman's assertiveness.

In her new announcements, she sounds angry, like she's PMSing.

But still, I prefer the Kleiner/Thompson/Ettinger alternations over a 100% "PMSing Ettinger-Gottesman" system any day!
TransferPoint9346 3 years ago
Okay. But I find it funny when Jessica Ettinger Gottesman says Bergen Street.

Now that's one recording I don't have yet.

why did they change it
Maserati7200 3 years ago
I've never heard these before. Much better than Ettinger's.
Everytime I hear hear, I think of my mother on PMS. And, yes, it is that bad.
Thanks for keeping this. Too bad the MTA didn't.

Thanks for keeping this.

Well, in the same announcements, yes.
Turn on the Closed Captions (click on that "up arrow" on the lower right of the player, then click the [CC] button) to see who says what.

They used these announcements in 2004??? I'm glad they changed the tone :)
