we've all read about this teacher but this recording is "supernatural" because it is bad condition. What does come across is a very natural musicality . Today's players...never mind im only 40 but I grew up with old recordings and there seems like something died along time ago .
The sound restoration is horrible!!! You should leave the cracks and hiss. Otherwise, it does not sound natural. Igumnov was a great pianist and a teacher; this is not fair to his legacy. Please, redo the track and post again.
I did "clean" the cracks and hiss while digitizing. May be it sounds less *authentic* because of cleaner recording, but it doesn't sound "unnatural" to me. LP's artifacts do sound "nostalgic" but it's not the essential property of Igumnov's performance.
Your point of view is understandable. You could have just added sound spectrum and a click removal instead of removing certain frequencies completely, without which the recording suffers dramatically. I agree that it is not quite essential to the performance, but very troublesome for the recording itself.
@Barbapippo No, it's not horrible at all... but it takes quite a bit of listening experience and knowledge to appreciate humble beauty of Igumnov's playing.
What I chiefly admire in Igumnov's sound is a capacity to create little sparkling lights, that sometimes Gieseking caught in Grieg, but never I think to this extent.
The whole mental essence of a Russian summer party right out of Turgenev seems here,
Simple elegance, delicate wistful beauty...
incredible artistry foggy sound and all!
Thank you.

This amaturistic restoration makes the piano sound like a hammond-organ. Awfull!!! Better post it with the cracks..

Great!
I also find the sound quality a bit distracting because of the processing (but tolerable).
Especially I appreciate the very informative and enlightening detail write-up! Thanks!
