I was 8 years old then ,1960,and this was on after i went to bed. I remember hearing the music, and getting up to see what it was. It was a cartoon like the honeymooners at that time.I always thought it was an adult cartoon, until it came on early,so us kids could watch it. It had that cool feeling, we got to watch a cartoon that wasnt just for kids. And at night too! God i miss those days,we didnt get a color tv till 1972.
At least kids seeing this would only get a tummy ache if they ate the Alka Seltzer for fun instead of wanting to grow up to try out those coffin nails!
I understand what you are saying, but The Flintstones was never DIRECTED at kids. Neither was Bugs Bunny for that matter.
And the first two seasons, The Flintsones were on at 8:30 ET. It wasn't until the third season that it got moved to a more "family friendly" time slot of 7:30 ET.
Granted, the FCC-mandated "Family Viewing Hour" wasn't created until 1976, but I'm sure networks back then still kept a family hour in mind when laying out their stripes.
This is the sponsor's I.D., which originally followed the main title of the show on ABC {on alternate Fridays, there was an R.J. Reynolds' "Winston" I.D.-"Winston tastes GOOD- like a cigarette should!"}.
HMM! They must have dumped Winston. Good for them.

Why did he look so happy to need an Alka-Seltzer?
TheJediCharles 5 months ago
@evilunixuser1 They would want to stay in the MILES (now BAYER) product family. So Fred would ask for the Phillips instead.

Wilma, where are my glasses? I can't see something that's right in front of me.

Actually this the sponsor into with the product plug. It's not a "commercial" per se.
And Fred is not being a "jerk." This is an advertising device to announce and display the product.

Sounds to me like a promotional opportunity. Now let's all go smoke a Winston with Fred and Barney.

So that was the "missing link" from the intro to season one of the Flintstones. Incredible.

The Flintstones was never meant to be a kids show. It was a prime time comedy that happened to be animated.
badwx 3 years ago
I know it started out prime time but, back then, ALL prime time shows were made so the whole family could watch-kids included!

Yeah, it bugs me when people assume anything animated is for kids unless it contains filth and swearing.
