Hi Duncan, Carlunie Hill (road from DD/Aberdeen, cut off for Glamis before Forfar, then after going through [heading N] the Den next Gallow Hill, down the vale and cut left at the bend/cottages, 1/2 way up the valley [towards Arc Hill] up the private farm road to the ESPclub paraking) one of the nice SE ridge/soaring Summer/Autum (mainly) flying areas. Eric from Aberdeen (beard, has a FF Recumbant Cycle) was out with me that day :-)
This vid was great fun to watch :D looked almost like dreaming: when you land in dreamflight but always somehow postpone it a little more and more... Let me guess--the source of the thermal was the truck? :P seriously though it's funny because the slope didn't even look like south side. Nice!
The valley in front 'cooks' in the sun, the SE sea breeze (once it) passes over the hills in front and gives (mid-late in the afternoon) a nice mix of ridge flying and thermal soaring out front (or over the back in the next valley system)
The launch point next the pickup is at about 800ft, while the high point of the hill is 1,100ft. One of the 'tricks' is to cut along the ridge to the 'low point' (Col) in the line of hills, then cut back to the face of the main hill (it's steeper) and/or cut out to 'flat land' thermal fly.... cutting out from the hill tends to 'burn' 100-200 feet.... but as the ground drops off quicker the 'AGL' (Above Ground Level) clearance increases, giving thermals plenty of time/height to form :-)
Hi Alphawolf on Very STRONG wind / thermal days I've soared a jump chute and there are some crossovers... but overall the diffrences are greater than the matches... that said the crossover between Jump Chute and Speedwings is closer.
I love watching your vids, Murray. I am currently training with Tony Delaney of Airborne, but would like to spend some time training with yourself post CP.
I got lots of pilots travelling to Scotland (inc. from abroad!) and most just bring a sleeping bag and stay at the house for a few days flying, most years we are in the air on 250-300 days, helped by having 100's of flying sites, a good number top drivable :-)
In addition recently Glenshee Ski Centre has opened all year around for Mtn Biking chairlift up 1,000ft for a day pass of £15
Yep BAGs of fun, with the amount of good reasonably priced 2nd hand Eq. available it's not difficult to get trained and in the air in a few months and for about a grand all in :-)
I really think this is the closest humans can get to un aided flight. I really wanna learn to do itsome time in the future. I even know a place with lots of wind and hills, so ridge lift should be plentiful.
The farmers oldest son was up for his first (tandem) that week and we spent about an hour flying 'out front' from the line of hills remaining at around 1,000 to 1,500 ft above the hill top, the best I've had in these conditions is 5,500ft.
Pilots have a choice to fly 'down wind' 11 miles (to the NW) the clear the Class A airspace, or (w'end) forward 4 miles, during the week a few 100m gets you out from below the Class A airspace.
The (Thermic) wind would have picked up to about 15kts based on low ground speed, the main change is the vertical component in the moving air, it was just one of those nice 'bubbly days', when if you fly well out from the hill (going down slowly) your ground clearance increases... so you can enter a better formed thermal... and fly back to above the main slope... goo conditions of tandem training (see other clips from that month)
Start by looking for Glamis (south of Kirriemuir birth place of 'Peter Pan' author JM Barrie .... and SW of Forfar) in East Scotland 'Angus' district...
Just 'work the numbers', 500 hours over 10 years would equate to only 50 hours a year i.e. about one hour a week!
The vast majority of my re-training EX-bhpa students DO have under a couple of hours airtime per year... but then in view of the incompetence of the BHPA training that is hardly unexpected!
Hrs Example: Alan Coffin got a couple of hours airtime in a whole year training with the BHPA, following RE-training he flew 100 hrs in that year.
Hi this clip was from a few years ago (prob 2004 or 5) so then about 2,500 hours flying, I've now been flying just over 10 years and am coming up to 4,000 hrs. mostly in Scotland with some trips to England & Wales where I also have students.
By the way my students fly about 15-25 hrs in their first few months of training and then up to 100 hrs in their first year...
If you take off that low and rely on just ridge lift at this site you WILL end up getting blown over the back at the ridge height, however you can see examples of the thermic lift @ 3:30 & 7:30 and several other sections of the clip. NB as I don't fly with a vario there are no 'bleeps'..

Hi hasnat7 generaly this location is used for solo/tandem flying in lift up to 1,500ft (AGL) the limit here is around 5,000ft due to Class A airspace

Hi Murray, I dont recognise this site. Can you provide a small clue? Also, who is the other PG PUT on the ground? Best Regards, Duncan.

how high do you think you could have gone up in this?
Eaglesfaninca 2 years ago
Hi, the legal limit here is about 4,000ft AGL.
The farmers oldest son was up for his first (tandem) that week and we spent about an hour flying 'out front' from the line of hills remaining at around 1,000 to 1,500 ft above the hill top, the best I've had in these conditions is 5,500ft.

murrayhay 2 years ago
You have gotten up to 1500 ft. off of that hill? It looks a little flat. I thought you had to start out from higher up. Amazing
I am looking to get into paragliding any advice?
Never done it before.
Eaglesfaninca 2 years ago
Top to Bottom is a couple of 100ft, more than enough for the 'flat lands' fields out front to produce thermals on the right day.
In fact a ridge soar/thermal site as low as 20ft can give good XC potential!
murrayhay 2 years ago
Amazing!
I live in the Los Angeles, Ca area. And I occasionally visit my family in Pennsylvania on our 400 acre farm (with some nice ridges).
How easy is it to transport all you gear via airplane?
Any advice for me to get started?
