Nice video, i have a question, how do you set the commander a list of things to build, like you click multiple things and he doesnt leave his current task? Thanks
what a fucking game. I'm gonna download it when I can. I actually bought the game twice, first over 10 years ago and then about 5 years after, I lost the discs.
@Databamse Or you could purchase the game legally off Good Old Games. Then go to TAUniverse and grab the rest of the mods and conversions with little extra effort.
@SylvesterInk I did it, I am a modder. I bought the game twicec, I have two copies of both TA, expansion packs and two copies of kingdoms too. I am the author behind some of the most aggressive OTA Ai's, i've coded 4 TA tools and contributed as much as anyone.
@Databamse Awesome! Glad to have a contributor around. But while you may have supported the game, those who download the pack will not. I'm the last person to preach about piracy, but for certain games like TA, it's worth paying for. (Yes, I know the money goes to Atari now, but the services that sell it, especially GOG, deserve the support.)
Games shouldn't be bought without being tried out first. While I agree, that TA is an incredible game and the best of its time, I would never waste my hard earned money on something I haven't tried out first.
@SylvesterInk exactly. i have been thieving old games, that have been modded to run on a 64x system. if they publishers would port them, i would buy them in a heart beat. gog.com is an awesome website, they have heaps of sweet games.
What screen recorder did you use to record TA gameplay? With Fraps, all I get for 10 seconds of recording is: 10 seconds and 1.16GB of black screen with TA sounds.
@t3hzb0t I used fraps. You need to have the TA Demo Recorder mod installed for TA. Search TA Universe for it. (Should be under the "ideal install" section.) The Demo Recorder modifies one of the graphic libraries that makes it more compatible with a recorder like fraps.
@SylvesterInk Fraps FPS counter now shows up, but, when I watch what i have recorded, it still shows up as black screen with TA sounds. And it still uses 3,95GB for ~35 seconds on 1920x1080, which is the usual resolution when i record.
@SylvesterInk That is good - one thing, however. On the website it says that it cannot work with single player? I'm not quite able to tell from your demo movies - are they skirmish or online? If they're online, are you able to record TA skirmish/campaign? If so, what version of the TA Demo Recorder are you using? Maybe what I read was outdated. (You can private message me if you'd like.)
How to unlock Krogoth, hovercraft, etc? I used to have those, but when I got a new computer I lost them. I can't remember how. Do u have to beat core or Arm campaigns?
@BenGeocth If I recall correctly, those units are part of the Core Contingency expansion to TA. You'll need to install that to be able to use them. If you never purchased that expansion, I recommend just getting the TA commander pack from GOG for 6 bucks, as it includes all the expansions.
Looks terribly great this game, it reminds me to C&C Red alert wich I used to play in playstation 1 when I was a kid. I'm feeling sad that I've never met this game before, when those shitty graphics used to loock so realistick in mu child mind xD
Today games have amazing graphics and when you see them you are like "wow cool". But after you play them for a while they simly die and you forget them. Some have a nice graphic but you don't even play them at all actually.
yeah i still play total annihilation online but only the original version of the game if you want to know how to get the game and play it online look at my video i made that shows you step by step. I mean the one released in 1997 and believe it or not people still play it online but only 100 or so. which surprises me because its got to be one of the best rts games on pc in that gen
If you add the player made mod Total Annihilation: Escalation you will have a lot more fun with this game. The new AI is brutal and it is very challenging and fun to play, way better than SupCom. The one problem I have with Escalation with me being an aircraft spammer is the lack of an effective aerial battleship but that's why you import Sky Fortresses in and the spice come right on back. Google search TA: Escalation for the full release of TA:ESC.
Buy it for nothing on GOG.com and play with all the units, all the missions, all the maps. Create your own maps and download awesome tiles from files.tauniverse and play multiplayer! :D The community is still there. <3
I love this game and sad not to see with new graphic abilities. You can not see the navy in other games like this, so good (you can have a aircraft carrier with full strength: mobile radar, repair, land and carry). And just do the same comment for C&C 4, no navy (I can not say there is navy).
@nikomas1 Supcom does a much better job at managing grand strategy and logistics, and has a lot of great UI features that improve on the ones in TA. (The dropship/ferry system alone is a wonderful improvement.) That said, TA is definitely still fun to play. It's a good balance between smaller tactical gameplay and strategy. There are some aspects I could do without though. (Samson rushing, hawk dancing, etc) The mods do a good job of balancing these aspects though.
Oh how i loved this game. Especially the fact u could build guns which shoot all the way across the map. I also remember how i raged because of the power though, since it pretty much depended on the climate and if u have shitty weather you have no power .
@YoungAssassin69 As did every game of its generation... it did the best with what graphics technology had at the time. For what it had to work with it's quite a good looking game actually.
Are you going to ridicule Pong or Space Invaders next because they look nothing like Crysis 2?
Hey guys, if anybody wanna play this game together me and some friends are still playing it and we would LOVE if somebody would wanna play it! Lets get this good old game going again !!!

I miss this game so much. I had it when I was like 4-6 years old, hahaha. I remember I used to like create two robots and then fight and lose every time but... still, good times. I watched the video at the beginning and never understood at all what they were saying but I was like "Pretty robots." XD I've been searching to get it again for awhile but I can never find it anywhere. Does anyone know where I can get it?
@Randazzlement Starcraft and Starcraft 2 are both very good games, but they aren't exactly strategic, or even that tactical. They focus more on micromanagement and a more simplified strategic concept. TA and SupCom 1 have a better grasp of the strategic level, whereas games like Close Combat have a better tactical scope. @SylvesterInk starcraft is based on multitasking.. theres cheesebuilds endgame builds..rushes... everything that total ahnilation has. in fact Starcraft is the measuring stick for ALL rts games. i think starcraft goes way deeper than total ahnilaton. its alot more balanced
@SylvesterInk or just download u torrent then go to thepiratebay ( don't quote me on that...no sure that is the exact website ) and download the total annihilation torrent link and install and then have fun playing for free
@Origamiman979 Or you could support an awesome distributor like Good Old Games who releases their games dirt cheap with no DRM, all patched and ready to play. I understand why people pirate stuff, but when you have publishers that try to address the issues, the least you can do is support them.
@SylvesterInk i agree with you, the only things i don't get are the videos, but i get sound fine. if i need something i just youtube it. plus i am really picky on games so if i can't download the full game like i want to i just find a decent demo then if i like it i can find a cheap version, which is where GOG will come in handy, so thanks for the reference.
There's no problem with the audio on either of the most popular torrents from TPB. And before you whine, I have actually bought the game (back when it was new), so I don't feel the slightest bit guilty for downloading it (and my CD is lost/scratched beyond imagination)
anyone else think its kinda amazing how few other RTS games since this come close to being as advanced? I mean, this has true line of sight, physics to determine fire based on elevation, gravity and wind. here small hills, massive hills, ridges, forests, everything effects the vehicles movement, gun fire, defense, attack.. the physics determine if projectiles hit and how much damage close by units recieve..how many newer RTS games do stuff like this?
@dageezerboi Don't forget the queue system. Being able to queue everything up was revolutionary and allowed the player to plan everything out more easily. Only Supcom improved on the queue system beautifully, but no other game has ever come close. (Not even Supcom 2.)
@SylvesterInk yeah that as well. I didnt like Supcom. I played it for about a week and didnt touch it after. Just wasnt that fun and was too "big" for its own good. I know alot love the game but I would rather play this instead every time.
@SylvesterInk not to mention the guard/move/patrol function used in conjunction with the queue system. you could tell a factory to have new units go on a patrol, move in a way point manner, guard a location/unit or assist the factory that built it. a transport could be queued to load/unload an entire army if you had the patience to click load/unload on every unit and location. and the transport would carry its orders without fail.
@dageezerboi forgot about weather hazards, tidal energy Dependant on which world, wreckage system incorporated into defensive and offensive strategy And economy. Intel based gameplay focused around radar, sonar and scout units to gather intel. stealth units and cloak units, reclaim, capture and resurrection of dead units. debris from dead units could hurt your own, aoe of weapons distorted by terrain, line of sight Dependant on terrain and elevation. dragons teeth and a complete navy/air force.
@dageezerboi Afaik, Supreme Commander (TA's "spiritual successor'), Dawn of War, and Company of Heroes have physics simulation and LOS gameplay. Definitely NOT Starcraft. During TA's time, I remember Dark Reign had physics based elements to it. But I can say this, Total Annihilation was a very sophisticated game for its time. I was awestricken by the sheer scale of it. Chris Taylor is a freakin' genius.
You guys should try "land air sea warfare" same premise, better graphics...dont have a good computer? dont worry even the iphone can run it. (I own it for the pc)
@Dem0nS1ayer well you have to remember, in this game, for every powerful unit that is in the game, there is one that beats that one. It goes on an on for a while. Then, we end with the nuclear missle. Which is a stationary unit. But the more powerful the unit, the longer the build time. And the graphics...well, this was made in like 1998 i think or something like that. So yes there are crappy graphics.
@MrColeknows True, but Starcraft was also made in '98. I've seen arguments made that TA is better than SC and one of the reasons is that its graphics are better. That is not the case at all. Also, you say that for each strong unit, there's another that can beat it. That doesn't mean that the game is balanced. Starcraft offers as close to perfect balance as you can get; numerous amounts of unit combinations can fight each other and the fight will stay even.
@MrColeknows Also, ending games with a nuke is not fun. You should beat your opponent by out macro/microing them, not building some super devastating unit that destroys everything.
@Dem0nS1ayer Really? I think the nuke is awesome. But it takes soooooo much energy and metal. So yeah, i would prefer using bombers or some powerful tanks. I know games shouldn't have a super unit, but i do not agree with that. It is so much fun to totally annihlate a person's base. That is why it's called TA. But we all have our own tastes. I say TA, you say starcraft. Go figure.
This game has been such a big inspiration! Me and my brother made lots of hand drawn cartoons about "Commander" and his bots. I don't think we ever understood the seriousness the game actually tried to express, we didn't know any English at that time either so for us it was just playing around in "Skirmish" mode. :)
okay i got the new patch for this game and i see that some units are dark and i cant build them, this is in skrim. mode too and some units are still dark, does anyone know why this is? like is it like an add on that i have to pay for or something?
... however it's sad, that this game was hardcoded to use D drive as the music source, so I can't hear that great great music anymore... well... almost. Winamp on loop with all TA tracks is able to do the trick. :P
I have my copy from the polish CD-Acton magazine since 2000. ^^ Ten years ago this game was able to slow down my Celeron 633 with 250 vs 250 units... and now... I'm finishing CC ARM campaign 7th time. ^^
anyone know how to play over ip direct play? i tried it on 26/dec/2010 with my bro and im sure we are using correct ip addresses, we both have unblocked total on firewalls etc. any help :)
i feel in love with this game when i first started playing this, sadly i lost my whole complete set.. :l now i'm trying to find one i can dl or buy :D
@UnKFishy you can get it for free online easily, the company who made it went under years ago sadly, but that also means no one is going to chase after anyone for putting it up for free download.
I remember playing this game over a decade ago, was the first ever strategy game I owned. God watching this video takes me back. Lent it to a friend on a "dude, this game is so f*cking awesome" basis. His 6 year old bro snapped the disc. Might have to download ;)
thats iligelly old

I mean, this has true line of sight, physics to determine fire based on elevation, gravity and wind. here small hills, massive hills, ridges, forests, everything effects the vehicles movement, gun fire, defense, attack.. the physics determine if projectiles hit and how much damage close by units recieve..how many newer RTS games do stuff like this?
dageezerboi 11 months ago 25
@dageezerboi Don't forget the queue system. Being able to queue everything up was revolutionary and allowed the player to plan everything out more easily. Only Supcom improved on the queue system beautifully, but no other game has ever come close. (Not even Supcom 2.)
SylvesterInk 11 months ago
@SylvesterInk yeah that as well. I didnt like Supcom. I played it for about a week and didnt touch it after. Just wasnt that fun and was too "big" for its own good. I know alot love the game but I would rather play this instead every time.
dageezerboi 11 months ago
@SylvesterInk not to mention the guard/move/patrol function used in conjunction with the queue system. you could tell a factory to have new units go on a patrol, move in a way point manner, guard a location/unit or assist the factory that built it. a transport could be queued to load/unload an entire army if you had the patience to click load/unload on every unit and location. and the transport would carry its orders without fail.

@dageezerboi Company of heroes,Do you agree?
Defiantly not sc 2 like most would say.
GTXMAN 10 months ago
@GTXMAN yeah great game, that and Dawn of War are 2 of my favourite RTS games. even they dont have the features of TA though, not really.
dageezerboi 10 months ago
@dageezerboi IMO dow 2 blew compared to the first one,but alright.
GTXMAN 10 months ago
@dageezerboi forgot about weather hazards, tidal energy Dependant on which world, wreckage system incorporated into defensive and offensive strategy And economy. Intel based gameplay focused around radar, sonar and scout units to gather intel. stealth units and cloak units, reclaim, capture and resurrection of dead units. debris from dead units could hurt your own, aoe of weapons distorted by terrain, line of sight Dependant on terrain and elevation. dragons teeth and a complete navy/air force.
behemuth 9 months ago
@dageezerboi like every new one, its just basic stuff that every RTS should have that most old RTS don't have, every new one you name should have it
Haku1234567890 9 months ago
@dageezerboi Eh none, except for Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance ?
:P
rocksparadox 8 months ago
@dageezerboi Afaik, Supreme Commander (TA's "spiritual successor'), Dawn of War, and Company of Heroes have physics simulation and LOS gameplay. Definitely NOT Starcraft. During TA's time, I remember Dark Reign had physics based elements to it. But I can say this, Total Annihilation was a very sophisticated game for its time. I was awestricken by the sheer scale of it. Chris Taylor is a freakin' genius.

Best game soundtrack ever made. Bar none. Probably one of the best RTS too. Ah, the memories!
alexmothernorthyork 11 months ago
lmfaooo fucking noobs thinking this is better than starcraft. shit graphics, overpowered "super" units, and boring ass gameplay. nice job.
Dem0nS1ayer 11 months ago
@Dem0nS1ayer well you have to remember, in this game, for every powerful unit that is in the game, there is one that beats that one. It goes on an on for a while. Then, we end with the nuclear missle. Which is a stationary unit. But the more powerful the unit, the longer the build time. And the graphics...well, this was made in like 1998 i think or something like that. So yes there are crappy graphics.
MrColeknows 11 months ago
@MrColeknows True, but Starcraft was also made in '98. I've seen arguments made that TA is better than SC and one of the reasons is that its graphics are better. That is not the case at all. Also, you say that for each strong unit, there's another that can beat it. That doesn't mean that the game is balanced. Starcraft offers as close to perfect balance as you can get; numerous amounts of unit combinations can fight each other and the fight will stay even.
Dem0nS1ayer 11 months ago
@MrColeknows Also, ending games with a nuke is not fun. You should beat your opponent by out macro/microing them, not building some super devastating unit that destroys everything.
Dem0nS1ayer 11 months ago
@Dem0nS1ayer Really? I think the nuke is awesome. But it takes soooooo much energy and metal. So yeah, i would prefer using bombers or some powerful tanks. I know games shouldn't have a super unit, but i do not agree with that. It is so much fun to totally annihlate a person's base. That is why it's called TA. But we all have our own tastes. I say TA, you say starcraft. Go figure.
MrColeknows 10 months ago
This game has been such a big inspiration! Me and my brother made lots of hand drawn cartoons about "Commander" and his bots. I don't think we ever understood the seriousness the game actually tried to express, we didn't know any English at that time either so for us it was just playing around in "Skirmish" mode. :)
Thank you Cavedog!!!

I always had to little metal in the beginning of each map! There weren't enough metal mines so I usually played maps that were made of metal :D
Sjores87 1 year ago
... however it's sad, that this game was hardcoded to use D drive as the music source, so I can't hear that great great music anymore... well... almost. Winamp on loop with all TA tracks is able to do the trick. :P
PanteraPolnocy 1 year ago
@PanteraPolnocy If you buy the game from gog(dot) com they have a music patch that makes it so you don't need something in the D: drive.

@UnKFishy you can get it for free online easily, the company who made it went under years ago sadly, but that also means no one is going to chase after anyone for putting it up for free download.
