  • Everyone in the latter portions of this comment board need to chilly, chill. And allow me to lay it down for you. VampireYouth raises some very salient points, while the QuestLove rump kissers are confused children. The man is a robotic, soullless imitator whose solos are not so much improv as they are pastiche, or medleys of something he once enjoyed. A quilting of silky beats laid down by true pioneers. Fans of the quest should exchange their sticks for knitting needles and get off my Ill Tip.

  • @TheMaestro40 LOL Robotic, Soulless Imitator... Playing drums is not all about solos my friend. When you can keep time, stay in the groove, and get as deep in the pocket as Questlove can, then I'll take what you say seriously.

    Until then, keep on practicing.

  • @CFGroove Thanks for the reality check, cause I was about to wriggity-wreck myself. I practice daily, and can delve in a groove, canyon deep, but i'm not surrounding by all-stars and descendent of a moneyed player. Muchos Gracias. One beat, many dreams.

  • I love Questlove but his voice always throws me off. I always expect it to be huskier, and, I guess bigger, like his size and his 'fro, but it's just always mad chill.

  • YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! NO DISLIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ?uestlove performed with john paul jones of led zeppelin at bonnaroo in 2008. that should answer any questions about his credibility as a drummer. he may not be flashy, but there's no way someone like jpj would play with him if he wasn't solid.

anyone who's ever been in a band knows that the time you spend offstage with your bandmates is just as important (if not more so) than the time you spend onstage. if you take what he says too literally you're missing the point.

  • @bobbygoesbig Believe me, he can be flashy, check out Long Time or You Got Me and the insane drumming on those tracks. But yeah, he's an amazingly solid drummer but also has unbelievable technicality.

  • watch raging bull, serve turkey sandwiches... perfect advices ever

  • He's right. Your band mates have to be your best friends, because when you're not friends, it's when the music becomes a job. It isn't fun for anyone, and that's how bandmates end up getting into fights, or putting out half-assed crap and mediocre live shows. You have to be able to establish a connection with them, because then it isn't a job. It's just a bunch of friends hanging out, doing what they love to do, and in turn, the music will reflect that.

  • In Conclusion: Sunday

  • @spider336699 , sounds like someone's jealous!! hahahahahaha!!!

  • He's also one hell of an Arm wrestler.

  • man he's so cool

  • ?uestlove, thanks for the advice! You're a great inspiration, cheers!

    <--check us out!--

  • "We're still here", and thank god you are or else hip hop would be a lost art

  • great advice

  • First noticed Questlove on Dave Chappelle's Block Party and was so impressed with his drumming and his whole attitude. He just seemed like such a cool guy and a genuinely nice person. His skill on the drums is very impressive. He was carrying on conversations and laughing all while keeping a very complex rhythm going. Amazing work and very fun to watch. I paid more attention to him than the other people on stage. I play drums too although not even close to that level.

  • Thank god I was born in 85, so in da early and mid 90's I had a opportunity to listen to real hip/hop.. Not this Cash-money BS, lil'Wayne Bull-crap...Hip/hop is still here, it's just hidden!!

  • "oh yeah!!Tell'em Quest!My brother!!

  • aint it the truth! thanks ?uestlove! your a legend!)

  • That is some super advice.

  • he is right! I learned the hard way. thanx Questlove

  • this dude is so awesome. just love his advice here.

  • i thought he was gonna say you should all go to church on sunday

  • So true man...... there's gotta be friendship inside a band, and the guys i play with, we play computer, we go to cafes, we talk and laugh...and playing music is fun when we are together... we dont argue if a guy misses a chords or whatever, we just laugh about it and start playin again

  • as long as we're talkin' about the often Trite, Stupid, Ridiculous horrible aggravating music business, I like this. I like this alot. Lol@!

and have much respect for this stupendous F'n Musician. this guy lays it "Down" word.

  • Good advice! You gotta be able to hang.

  • Hey its about listening to questlove.

  • sunday is band day. that is much more important than your gay shit.

  • LOL

  • @uhoh38125 The Roots have about 9 records of touching, interesting, creative, talented, etc under their belts to show for all the love and art they have spread... no disrespect meant but as an agnostic, this means so much more to me than words in a book that are supposedly God's word. Good for you if you can suspend your disbelief and have such a concrete, elementary belief in what is in the beyond, but don't push it on others.

  • @sovietsentinel thanks with love and comfort from the "beyond", I removed my thoughts because they offend. Thank you for your own thoughts.

  • @uhoh38125 Wow. I don't think I've ever seen someone so adamantly religious be so accepting of the beliefs and criticisms of someone without the same faith. Most of the time one gets a sanctimonious "I pity you and God loves you still", but you really seem to practice what you preach. Major respect points. Cheers! =)

  • yea its gods day for you not for everyone else

  • its not gods day for me its just another day band day it could be

  • stfu with that jibberish

  • uhuo--And hanging with fam on the sabath is the intention of 'the lords day' anyway. so there is no problem, no conflict. a band can be like your family, sitting together, cooking, eating food, talking, spending time together, that is what creates the presence of God.

"where ever two or more of you are gathered..."

Dont be so dogmatic. (godmatic?) god is love. Not strict rules.

  • You're Welcome

  • word!

  • im diggin his philosophy

  • EXCELLENT ADVICE!!!!!!

  • this man speaks the absolute truth. if anyone has been in a band that (more than likely) gets into regular arguments... you know ?uestlove is right.

  • ?uestlove is the man <3

  • it's fucking pathetic that you have to go right down to the start of the comments to see any real ones, stop arguing the people arguing will never meet each other so whats the point??

    ?uestlove IS talent

  • agreed

  • What the fuck is that stupid argument below even about?

  • questlove is sick the roots are sick and the name questlove is sick. they are real musicians and artists

  • yo'.. yo'.. wut wrong wit questlove.. juss because his name has love in it it dont mean hezz gay.. itzz kuzz he likezz tha damn drumzz.. datzz hiss talent.. so.. since hezz one of tha best drummerzz alive.. so hate on questlove.. wut if u went against him on drumzz nd he beatzz u.. den wut!!!

there aint nuthin wrong wit him.. nd hiss name dosent mean hezz a homo!!!

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is this man black or white..i hear his voice it sounds a bit white..

  • how does he sound white? you were expecting yo yo yo and a deep barry white voice?

  • he sounds like a little white bitch to me i wanna hear that deep barry white or james brown voice he sounds like a straight up bitch to me and cut that afro u aint hendrix nikkah

  • you wanna hear that deep barry white voice cuz you a homo

  • liennto your a pussy insulting me online do it when we in the same room together and dont walk away after you do it

  • nah i'm not insulting you man, really, its ok to be gay! i got no beef with that. i can only imagine how hot and steamy you get when you hear "just the two of us". and what, calling quest a "white bitch" somehow isn't an insult?? who's the pussy here?

now go jerk off to your favourite barry record, little boy.

  • listen your a pussy defending this black man that has a white anglo saxon voice and your defending him like if he gave u some head or hes paying your bills you..let me tell you something..you a biotch

  • oh man, you need an english lesson, questlove could help you with that... but i am very proud of you for announcing to the world on youtube that you prefer black men with deep voices. it takes courage to do that! good for you! rainbow power in the house!

  • Wow you reek of ignorance my friend. Pure ignorance. Why don't you just shut your mouth and go back home. Leave the listening of REAL music by MUSICIANS to real people who can appreciate true talent. Judging from your ability to express yourself in your comment, you're a 12 year old who thinks that the world's best rapper is lil wayne.

  • Hahahhahaha best rapper alive...you're one funny douchebag , a 23 year old that listens to lil wayne? My friend...you need to expand your mind...and that expansion cannot happen by listening to lil wayne.

  • @theemceemurdah hah, lil wayne and "rap" got old to me when I was 14. By the time I'm 23 i hope to have a normal job and be an adult, not some dude that still hangs out with high school kids and rides around listening to wayne.

  • @thedoors91 It's an american accent, not an anglo-saxon accent. The English are anglo-saxons, and he sure as hell doesn't have a british accent. Stop getting blinded by your hate of white people.

  • @thedoors91 get the fuck outta here

  • smart man !

  • Questlove has changed the drumming world, there is no doubt about that. Very creative but very, very precise and consistent.

  • whats that track playing in the background?

    Awesome!

  • some people just love to heard drummers play drums fills like tocococtotot psssszzzz

than everybody stops dancing !! face it yoorheinez you are one of those folks, don't fake the funk, we know you like chick corea we can smell it LOL

  • There are artists truly creative these days like Radiohead,Justice or Georgia Anne Muldrow(my fav:you've got to listen to Olesi if you don't know already) but not as much as in the old days simply because "all" was to create back then.I agree it's nearly impossible to be really original nowadays in any artistic discipline.Peace.

  • i think jazz music is for people who are afraid to grab a nice girl/guy/ and rub her good till she kisses you .. WTF .. i know that makes no sense

  • Dude my fucking band... I love the guys in it and we are fucking tight as shit too, but we are always bailing on each other on the weekends. We use to play every friday night sometimes sunday too man... I cant tell you how many times we have had breakfast together hungover and burnt out , miserable.

  • as much as i love questloves drumming isn't he a tad bit overrated?

  • Highly underrated, actually.

You obviously don't know the huge influence he's had on music.

  • not at all. he's changed the face of how we interact and explore hip-hop music, and music in general.

and he's also the best drummer in hip-hop / rap / r+b / funk /groove that we've seen in the last 20 years

  • uhm, maybe you could be more specific? i can't see how he has changed anything at all other than he was part of the neo-soul movement.

best funk drummer in the last 20 years? haha, come on.

  • Best funk drummer in last 20 years. He has been featured with more than 50 big named people (michael jackson, prince, red hot chili peppers)

Prince called him out when he was at a show to play drums for him.

    that good.

also, he has changed the drum scene completely. he has taken all these different styles and meshed them into one. i went to jimmy fallon and he played a drum solo every commercial break. i cant describe how good he was.

    that good (stepbrothers voice)

  • he has been given a good reputation in the business as being a solid allrounded drummer, no doubt. but at the end of the day he is just imitating the greats. i know how much he was into james brown, sly, prince etc. it's just that hiphop-cats think that he is some messias because they have never heard it before, but it's all already been done.

and also, there are sick drummers in the churches with alot more. check out chris dave, bruce carter, derrick mckenzie etc.

    way overrated.

  • you mean cause he don't play drum fills or because he just produced Al Green new grammy award wining master piece LOL

  • still fucking overrated. he ain't prince.

  • Prince oh yeah the tinny mighty bi-sexual guitar god from the 80's he is a dynamite explosive anus tongue twister, i like early prince man........ now what is that gotta do with ?uest love being overrated

  • questlove hasn't changed music.

  • Man,i've jut checked your fav vids & you obviously don't know what you're talkin' about:Jamiroquai or Level 42 have changed music maybe? Plus, you have all the Soultronics vids, have you heard this band without Quest on drums & noticed it doesn't sound the same AT ALL? & do you really think Prince has changed music lately ? Come on...(btw,i love Prince's music since the 80's but the last time he did something new was maybe Sexy M.F)

  • lol, why are you talking about jamiroquai and level 42? sly & family stone, james brown etc. THOSE are cats who have changed music. i love the soultronics, and like i said i dig questloves drumming, but i still think he is the easiest to replace. and he is still way overrated. maybe you are just easy to impress musically.

  • A drummer(or any musician)who has been working with Jay Dee will always impress me.

No offense but if you think ?uestLove is way overrated & you listen to guys like Jamiroquai ,i'm afraid we're definately not talking about the same thing.

  • first off, jamiroquai is a group, not a "guy". and why do you keep mentioning them? i never said that they have changed music. (allthough they have the bestselling funkalbum).i listen to james brown, kleer, pleasure, earth wind & fire, miles davis, roy ayers, ohio players, charles mingus, graham central station, weather report etc. questlove has been inspired by alot of that stuff. so TRUST me, i know what you are talking about.

  • No doubt he has been influenced by all these musicians & by many others like Prince,J Dilla,James Gadson or Harvey Mason to name a few.

Speaking of overrated,Jamiroquai ARE obviously the most(don't care how much they have sold) that's why I mentioned them: My point is just that if you are open-minded enough to dig bands like them,I don't understand why you keep bashing ?uest;even if it's not your taste, admit this guy has been part of several huge musical events in the last 15 years.Peace.

  • no you don't understand alot obviously, questlove has still not changed music which some dude stated earlier. that's what i was replying too, and you keep talking about jamiroquai lol. hiphopcats..... always easily impressed by the good ol' funk.

  • I obviously don't understand a lot but you're a funny guy!

    Do you want more(1994,drummer,producer) ...Voodoo(1999 drummer,executive prod.)... Like water for chocolate(2000,drummer,exe.Prod.)Mama's gun(2000,drummer,composer)Fantastic vol.2(exe.prod)Electric circus(2002,drummer,comp,exe.prod).New amerykah(2008,drummer,composer)..

"questlove has still not changed music as some dude stated earlier" : Are you deaf or uninformed?

  • i replied in an earlier comment: "i can't see how he has changed anything at all other than he was part of the neo-soul movement." all those albums you just named was neo-soul basically. i like some of that stuff, but compared to marvin gaye it's not as strong songwriting (and his drumsound is yeah, alright) like i said, you're just to easy to impress. keep searching for good music.

  • In the 60's you would have said that Marvin's songs weren't as strong as Ray's or that Hendrix's playing was overrated compared to BB King's,it goes the same for classical,jazz,pop...litterature,painting,theatre...Actually,you're right:everybody should stop trying to create,it's useless;it's better to stay stucked inthe past.btw,I love Marvin & D'Angelo,Elvin & J Dilla,Trane & Branford...I know WHO has done WHAT and I'm happy to be easily impressed(at least,I'm alive ;-)

  • i hear you. but that when you hear the originators you don't go for the imitation. i love the soultronics but they stole _alot_ of their ideas and concept from the masters. it kind of cheapens it a bit for me, atleast for me. i feel there is nothing new under the sun anymore. hence why the music nowadays isn't what it used to be. but someday it might change, i really hope so. Peace

  • ok but it's the same for Prince:if you listen to Sly's "in time" from Fresh, for instance,it's hard not to admit that Prince has been hugely influenced by that.He also took things from Little Richard,James,Curtis,Jimi and blended them with a new sound creating a new style;that's not stealing(listen to Killing Joke "eighties"& then to Nirvana's"come as you are" that's stealing cause it sounds the same) D'Angelo has always said that the Soultronics 2000 tour was a tribute to Prince's 80's shows...

  • yeah, everything evolves. but it has come to a point where there is not much more to do. and i don't think questlove is due the credit of being called a "genius" or how he has "completely changed the face of our music" because of what he has done.

  • Comment removed

  • Dude.....you're scaring me.....BTW Chad Smith respects ?uestlove

  • Christ someones got some issues?

  • wow man how old are you?

  • ?estlove is such a great role model. He is an amazing drummer who can play a variety amount of styles, which makes him a great drummer. Not only is he a dreat drummer, he is a great business man. We will always love you ?estlove!

  • I was reading "experiment03's" comments....uhhh how is your opinion gonna matter? Is your opinion gonna change anything? I love Jazz and other genres and ?uestlove is a huge musical influence to me and for you to disrespect a accomplished musician like ?estlove doesn't make sense to me when he made something of himself in the music world coming from the most violent city in the US [Philly] while you [experiment03] is calling him a glutton yet nobody has heard of you or seen you.

    R ,U A TROLL?

  • Hey man let's talk seriously here now. I mean seriously like if we respect each other. I never said RHCP is jazz, I just uploaded some videos because I had them and I like them period I obviously know they're not jazz. I simply gave you my opinion about Jazz, pretty rude but that's the way you were talking. If you want to slap ?uest cause he played with Redman just go out and do it.

  • Shut the fuck up experiment03, you don't know shit about music, you say Jazz is boring man do you even have a brain? Hip-Hop wouldn't even exist without Jazz influence and samples. Jazz is pure real music but you obviously don't know shit.

And stop with the obese stuff. That's just so dumb you sound like you're fucking 5 years old.

  • Hey don't watch it then you tool.

  • Shut the fuck up.

You don't know anything about me, just like I don't know anything about you apart from the fact you personally slander someone when they're just talking about music.

Youtube is full of fucking ignorant cunt's like you.

I make a fucking point about the evolution of music (which you clearly don't know anything about) and you respond with slander?

Nice one, look at you with the shiny badge, gold fucking medal you stupid cunt.

  • Comment removed

  • Shut up Bernie fucking Mac, how are doing this from beyond the grave anyway?

    Jesus fucking christ.

  • I should be killed for a comment on youtube?

    All because you hate jazz?

    I'm the idiot?

Fuck me mate, you're actually retarded.

  • Straight away it goes to physical appearance abuse when I was actually talking about you're non exist musical knowledge.

I think you just proved my point.

  • So much anger in this thread when the whole point of what ? was saying was to be cool with one another. Music ain't about h8in. It's about love, my brothers and sisters! It's about love.

  • Mate, you're a fucking idiot.

What do you think hip hop evolved from?

    Jazz, soul and funk.

And the latter were created by the first.

And Quest is a fucking drummer, like I am, so I'm sure jazz is one of his main influences.

All the syncopation and groove in hip hop drums, where the fuck do you think it came from you fucking idiot?

Learn just a fucking little bit about something before you slander it you cunt.

  • I love ?uest Love man he is an extremely intelligent and tallented person

  • I see you check me out tooreal freestyle on youtube

  • You're an idiot my friend. Jazz paved the way for all types of experimental and modern music.

  • what a cool dude

  • thats my family yea cuz

  • lol i love this guy

  • My feelings $ Questlove:

I wish Questlove was my daddy or my lover is this wrong? lol big up The Roots luv u Questlove

I think the his name 4 me has a certain irony 2 it my love 4 him is questionable Quest...Love

    he's perfect.

    oh & good advice

I think he's advising the promotion of compulsory love for your band members the somewhat the same kind of love u have for family...even if u r at total loggerheads with ur fam or band mates just remember the love.

    and I'll 2nd tugtabbathawez fuckin A!

  • not only is quest and awesome drummer

    he is a cool dude

    GO ?UEST!!!!

  • it's very basic...but very true. I've seen allot of good bands fall apart because of lack of camaraderie.

  • ?uestlove on Joshua Redman's "Put it in your Pocket" is some of the crunchiest, tightest groovin ive ever heard

  • i totally agree.

  • This is so true coming from a very seasoned veteran of the music business. People let's all get together and make music what it should be and take the control away from the record companies.

  • fuckin A!

  • why you post your own videos instead of talking SH&* about how a genius talks...

  • this dude has the best tempo i've ever seen. you could probably shout a number and he'd start playin that tempo.

  • ?uestlove is my favorite drummer ever!!!!

  • oh man..he is sooo funny

  • what about sunday be church day? those who pray together, stay together. prayer!

  • No.

  • if ur not gonna say anything smart then don't say anything at all. dumbass

  • who failed hard in the grammar dept? cuz i put ur instead you're... oh please. do not be ridiculous. it's called internet lingo. get over it.

  • agh. you're retarded. it does not make me seem unintelligent. and if that's the case then never say "ain't", never say "fo' sho'" never say "yeah" or "naah" cuz that would make u sound unintelligent. stupid extremist.

  • Whatever, if nothing else, your essence really sucks. Questlove rules.

  • I have to say this is the funniest thing I've read online in a long time. I can't remember when I've come across a more stereotypical bickering / flame session (particularly because it has nothing to do with the video you're posting on) Keep it up and you might get a production deal at fox news!

  • humble guy

  • thnx questlove!

  • I need 4 more people like ?uestlove. This man truely speaks the truth.

  • That is the most realiest, deep, inspirational sense I've ever heard!!!! Thank U. I needed that.

  • i was in a band for 5 years, with people i considered good friends and we are no longer a band much less friends. And what ?uestlove is saying is absolutely true. you need to bond on more than just a musical or professional level, its gotta be like a family.

  • Amen, Questlove...tell it like it is, my friend! :) SO true about that, we must really be a family, that's what it's all about...

  • If you think this isn't a bilateral issue....Check it out....The republicans are for it.......Fucking corporate kickback assholes.......I believe in a hell only cause of people like this......

  • Complete respect for quest......You know he speaking from the heart.....Being in a band that cannot be given any criticism.......Whatsoever......

  • this video is so awesome. ?uestlove's advice for bands is so original ive nvr seen anything like it. lol SUNDAY IS GONNA BE BOWLING NIGHT!!

  • hes made a point and a half with that.

  • Turkey is expensive!?

  • LOL!

  • That's right
