@john2pimp they're not supposed to do that. To tell you the truth, high school debaters shouldnt even make eye contact. I think theyre doing it now only because there is an audience. There usually isnt one

@MissusNorris a flow chart is what you use to keep track of what the other team or your team is saying so when your speaking you know what to refute or expand on. It's just like taking notes. Most flow charts have five sections. First prop first opp second and third prop are the same column and u separate it in half yourself then third opp and third prop you leave whatever position your speakings category blank and record what each of the speakers are saying and their points as best as you can

The greatest mistake that these debaters are making is that they sound like they're reading a passage from a book. Their cadence and their lack of authentic inflection is a big fault. They should *speak* to the audience, not read to the audience.

@Peiazjaeh I'm a 3 sport varsity athlete and I personally thought it was going to be lame. Now that I'm taking debate i must say I enjoy it. It's like arguing as hard as you want. (: It's pretty fun.

my debate for class tomorrow is the affirmation position for the honor study hall (3.25 gpa required to qualify) to be reinstalled for high achieving students at my school.

@gegak Being a lawyer is a hundred times worse than this. It's all about reading the fine print and getting in the miniscule details. If you can't handle everything thrown at you (90% of it will be boring as hell), you should probably consider a different route.

Jesus christ get a grip, those commenting on that they have a debate tomorrow and "the world might end" just calm down. Firstly these speeches have been pre-prepared (they look down allot) and just cut your case down into basics, how it affects stakeholders (eg. people, govt.), what are the implications of proposing a model, other alternatives that might arise. Just chill, use whatever comes into your head. Also, don't mention if your parent's died when you migth have been young, its unnecessary

Okay, so I'm starting High School this year and I'm SOOO nervous! I've always wanted to be in debate, I love to speak my opinions and have a good "argument" with others, so I choose that as a course.

What do you do in Debate? What do you learn? When do you get your first competition? Where is it? How do you get to state finals? How can I win a scholarship? Can it be a scholar ship for any school? (preferably University of Texas at Austin)

@misshoneyx1 I would recommend looking up videos on all of the forms of debate. PF(Public Forum), Congress, Policy, and LD. That will show you what different choices you have. It's hard to explain what exactly we do and what we learn in Debate. What I can tell you is that it's worth the time it takes and worth the hard work. Work with your school and your coach.

I am a policy debater at my school and the tournaments and rounds I've been to I have only debated in front of my partner, the other team, and the judge. Four other people isn't too bad but if you can not handle that I recommend trying, somehow, to get over your fears so you don't have to quit. Do not quit!

I debated a lot during high school, although in York law school I sit as a committee member for the York on campus elite debating committee.

We debate other universities across greater Europe, recently returning from Russia as well for a European University Debating conference.

American debates are substantially different to the structure of European debates but I guess fundamentally, their relatively the same.
