My church choir did this, and it was wonderful. But I think it needs the full, fat sound of a large ensemble. Also, I think it's better with adult male and female voices. Altos rule ... and that's coming from a baritone!
It is beautiful music and a beautiful performance. Wonderful counterpoint - but it is, after, all by Cesar Franck, the great master of harmonic polyphony. There again, I'm a rusted on Franckian !!
wonderful music.. but in the organ part I would like to hear some typical Franck type of registrations!! fond8+hautbois, fonds 16,8+reeds 8,4.. and the organ is important!! too soft here.. needs more fire!! romantic passion..
I understand this part. I know where the text comes from, and I am Catholic so I understand where it is used in the liturgy too. But I'm not sure where this piece of actual music comes from? Was it part of Franck's setting to the mass? Or an oratorio? Or something of that nature?
This is the proper Offertory for the Third Sunday after Epiphany and the following Sundays until Septugesima in the Tridentine Rite. The Offertory for Easter Day is "Terra Tremuit" (Ps. 75).
The right hand of God makes me live. The right hand of God exalts me. The right hand of God makes me live. Alleluia! I will not die, but live, and tell of the works of God.
Franck's original score is (apparently) for sop, tenor & bass chorus, with sop, tenor & bass soli. One source also indicates a string bass in addition to the organ, but I've not seen this. Some published editions have added an alto chorus part. An American edition was published some years ago by FitzSimons.
I sang this (tenor part) one Sunday a couple months ago for Mass in Paris with the Chorale Fra'Angelico. So many great songs. Comment la France me manque fort !
It should have four parts, unless I'm seriously amnesiac. You'd have heard it last March or April, right? That was us... horror of horrors if you only heard three!
hallelujah hallelujah

@bobcat081754 Female voices?? No young boys are the best, they are literally Angelic voices.

3:52 ... is definitely not a Franck organ sonority !

People will forgive me. There is a tiny hint of "Auld lang syne".

entièrement d'accord avec vous sauf que ce sont les grands offertoires en trio et une alternance entre trios de solistes et choeur à trois voix

I taught this song to my students at marianistas school. Great memories

btw does anybody know what this piece comes from? did Cesar Franck write it by itself or in a bigger piece, like an oratorio or something?
rumpranger75 2 years ago
These verses come from psalm 118 (117). They predict the Christ rising and they are used on Easter Sunday, at offertory.

The piece was written by itself and it's the number 65 in the Franck's catalogue. It's like a mottetto.

then I have a question for you. This song has 3 voices or 4?
Because I heard the song during a Tridentine mass of Saint-Nicolas-du-Chardonnet in Paris.
I only could hear 3 parts...
I looked everywhere on the internet for the score. But it seemed impossible to find a free one...

No, on youtube... Tridentine Mass pentecôte.
I have found the score!!
And I really onlye see: ténor, basse and soprano.
But in this video I think I hear 4?
Je ne sais pas :S
But, do you have the organ score?
I really can't find that!

I agrre, when can we get the score for this? any one patient enough to write it please??
priest008 3 years ago

Here's the lyrics of the song:
"Dextera Domini fecit virtutem. Dextera Domini exaltavit me. Alleluja! Non moriar sed vivam et narrabo opera Domini."
And do pardon my off-the-cuff translation:
The right hand of the Lord strengthens me. The right hand of the Lord exalts me. I shall not die but live and I shall speak of the works of the Lord.
