  • I wish I was unschooled or homeschooled. Peers were never important to me. I had a prominent interest in the arts, writing and using computers. The idea great fine so long as the he has an established interest. From the view of a now 18 year old who did public school system..I say loosen the reins and let that talent flow. I sure wish my own could have instead of wasting time on subjects the crippled my creativity and made me doubt my intellect. I know for sure my kids will be homeschooled. =)

  • im 14 years old about to be 15 and the whole unschooling thing is crazy i dont really agree with homeschooling either i mean school gives you an experience like no other of course at first i hated school so much it was ridiculous but now that i have gotten a little older i have started to click with school and get involved and want to be involved with stuff i have made so many friends in school and what kid at first doesn't want to stay at home in the long run its not worth it

  • I'm the same way. I do terrible being taught. If some says to me, "I need to teach you___." I run from them. I was extremely - depressed all through my last university trying to adapt to their educational format (and I did try got one A-). When I came home my parents got mad at cause I tried to back track and study on my own.(I don't blame them after spending all that cash.)My overall demeanor has drastically improved not to mention health. My you should make a 25% lecture time deal with him.

  • First of all, don't even entertain ad hominem comments. Second, leave them kids alone. Unschool him. Html? He's already doing Html? I don't do html now and I've been through years of government school. Thanks a lot uncle Sam. It'll take me years to unlearn the tripe I was taught.

  • Dearest Ahermit:

Ive the same experience, but regarding languages. For years, my mother had gotten me Arabic tutors, and I never quite made it to a higher level. It went in one ear and out the other. Yet she NEVER asked or made me learn Spanish. I learned it on my own. Started off with TV, and since I already knew french, the transition was easy. Then I went out and got books. Read them. Socialized with the Spanish kids in my town, and asked LOADs of questions. I now speak and write it.

  • Goes to show that learning and being taught are two TOTALLY different things. I dig your videos.

  • I think a lot of people try to figure out the learning process to the point where they want to put it in a box and define it..therefore mastering it. However, to me the mind is so complex that we may never be able to accomplish this. I think the main thing you can do for your kids is show them the paths. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your video blog. And just ignore the ignorant comments.

  • you don't look like a monkey.

    UNSCHOOLING. IS. THE. KEY.

  • I'm a recent Stanford University graduate who was raised as an unschooler. I was very involved and took many classes at the community college while I was in high school, but none of that information influenced me as much as the interests I pursued on my own, at home. I have 4 siblings (2 of which are currently at very good universities), and we all are passionate in specialized areas. I think that unschooling is best for kids with strong passions, but that it doesn't make one a generalist.

  • Thanks for weighing in KiraAless

  • you are rite my name is isaac i do unschool to im 10 in a half i made a youtube account my mom has one and i th8ing unschooling is great cuz im going to be a game creater when i grow up so i get more time on the computer its great

  • What do you do on the computer? Do you ever read or do anything related to game-creation, and the codes you'll need to get used to? If you're aiming and practicing game-creation, great! However, part of getting used to coding is to get used to using every key on the keyboard, and actually using correct spelling and punctuation. not that this should EVER be something you should practice individually; you should just try to write better. Sorry for not writing very comprehensive sentences. :-(

  • I think not wanting to be taught could stem from his food intake. I'm not sure what you prepare, but a childs intake affects the learning process dramatically, many would never link the two. Also, children may need to be shown things rather than taught, then the parent and child can speculate together. Instead of the things he hates, how about the things he likes? Positive mental energy grows.

  • Bull. Fucking. Shit.

I'm an actual high school student living and breathing the fumes of public education every day. I havn't learned anything in class since 5th grade when we were free and got to teach ourselves things.

  • I do however teach myself music theory, graphic design, and web development just for the fun of it, and I havn't lost ANY of the details I've picked up on in EVERY training video and EVERY article and tutorial and book I've ever read. It has nothing to do with the food I eat- I'm quite sure of that because I eat quite healthily. It has everything to do with the corrupted ways of modern public education.

  • If I had been teaching myself math, reading, and writing with the same mindset as I teach myself about art, and had done that since 5th grade, I'm quite sure I would be able to pass the SAT with an extremely desirable score.

  • The food you eat matters when it is not healthy. It allows the corrupt to influence a person more into not thinking. If you are eating healthy then that's even better. Maybe that's why you see the light?
