Gummo is the name of the "forgotten" Marx brother; thus these people. I always looked at the beginning (the rabbit kid), as a sort of symbol of being forgotten. How he is watching the cars, LIFE, go by as he is in a cage, right in their in their sight if they looked for him. He goes through almost every emotion in that cage; anger, sadness, disgust, loneliness, boredom, ect. He knows life is moving on without him and he's stuck, with no escape. Very well-done movie.

Gummo reminds me of my childhood friends and a lot of the things I saw as a kid. Kids which is directed by the same guy reminds me of middle school through high school.
It's the greatist home movie, cult classic, out of the box freak show ever. Equaled only, (but not quite), by Crispin Glovers movie "What Is It"! Far exceeding David Lynch's Eraserhead, and far superior to the Easter Bunny sh-t Hollywood cranks out on a daily basis.
Although staged, this film comes across as a documentary to me. I lived not far from Zenia in Indiana for 27 years because I accepted a high paying position with a a "fortune 250" corporation. MOST people in this area are very deficient in any understanding of the world or truth. It is TRULY scary! For a person of intelligence, it is like dealing with animals - monkeys in a zoo. Rational thinking is removed in these people. Taught regimentation from birth, they have no free thought.

i just finished watching it, I can't tell you now what I feel I need to go to bed and think about what I just saw, then I may come back to you and give you my opinion.
Having lived in Xenia, OH even during the 2000 tornado, I can say we don't have ANY 6 lane highways like in the opening. Hell, we don't even have any pedestrian bridges over US 35, US 68 or US 42; There's no point with the little pedestrian traffic we have.
We do have rednecks though...not going to lie about that.
It's a piece of art. This is actually reality for alot of people. People who don't like it should keep in mind, while watching it, that this film depicts what life is actually like for alot of less fortunate people.To enjoy this film doen't make anyone disturbed. It simply shows us a less flattering side of life and we can all learn from watching it and perhaps realising how lucky we actually are.

Granted, Korine’s films are exceptionally bizarre and surreal, but they’re an acquired taste. At least he’s not pretentious about his films though. He openly stated once that Gummo was essentially a freakshow of misfits from Ohio, but it’s still an oddly compelling film. Also, long live bohemianism! :P

This might sound snobby, but directors like Korine aren't tied down by the restrictions of modern mainstream cinema, and as a result, are free to experiment as they please, hence the reason why most of their films don't have a linear (in other words very clear and apparent) plot. People appreciate these films for their general weirdness, and that's why they've accumulated a large fanbase. It's called Surrealist and Underground Filmmaking.

Gummo is a brilliant work of art. To the average movie watcher its a low quality dumb retarded movie..etc etc. but with Gummo Harmony surpassed Larry Clark as a director. Harmony takes trailer trash and manages to still portray a film with such sophistication. Brilliant director.....

Harmony Korrine doesn't know shit. Using Tenessee for Ohio is like trying pass off Flagstaff for San Fransisco. People don't even have a Southern/Appalachian accent there. If he wanted to focus on the true "dark, gritty side of Middle American Life" he should have done more along the lines of a modern day version of Babbitt. There are thousands of interesting (and factual) points you could address about American life using a place like Xenia as your setting but Korine didn't get to a single one.
continued: He instead opted to make a shocker flick and really must have just opened a map and picked a location for his setting at random. It's fine to make a disturbing/shocker movie every now and then, but if there is no reason to pick the location you did, then simply don't do it, especially if you are going to not even film there.
I'm not from Xenia (from Columbus) and I have no particular love for Ohio but I'm really sick of these inaccurate portrayals of life not on the two coasts.

The girl watched it and then was disturbed and asked what kind of person I was. Yet, I love how this movie evokes a strong reaction in people... I really enjoyed this movie.

Harmony Korrine doesn't know shit. Using Tenessee for Ohio is like trying pass off Flagstaff for San Fransisco. People don't even have a Southern/Appalachian accent there. If he wanted to focus on the true "dark, gritty side of Middle American Life" he should have done more along the lines of a modern day version of Babbitt. There are thousands of interesting (and factual) points you could address about American life using a place like Xenia as your setting but Korine didn't get to a single one.

It's fine to make a disturbing/shocker movie every now and then, but if there is no reason to pick the location you did, then simply don't do it, especially if you are going to not even film there.
I'm not from Xenia (from Columbus) and I have no particular love for Ohio but I'm really sick of these inaccurate portrayals of life not on the two coasts.

I know many people absolutely hate this movie but it has always been one of my favorites. I lost out on a date with a girl because I admitted that I enjoyed this movie and watched it many times. The girl watched it and then was disturbed and asked what kind of person I was. Yet, I love how this movie evokes a strong reaction in people... I really enjoyed this movie.
