Russia called their bluff and actually kept their word. If Georgia were in NATO and invaded South Ossetia, they'd have still started WW3, because Russia would have reacted, and NATO would be obliged to aid their ally. Georgia in NATO is NOT a good idea. NATO intervened in the Balkans because of systematic ethnic "cleansing" and genocide. It was the right thing to do. The world agreed (obviously not those who were on the receiving end of those 500lb GBU's). Libya is somewhat similar. The rebels asked for aid because Gedaffi's forces were slaughtering their own people.
