  • This is so truly wonderful that words fail me!

  • awesome!!!!

  • this has been stuck in my head ALL day.

    and yes, this version.

not the actual toreador song lol

  • It sort of struck me - the idea of having a national day dedicated to the letter "L". We'd go around with L's on poles and sing our devotion to the letter L.

  • i also sang along too... cos its one of my favourite songs..

  • Fabulous singing from Ramey in his prime!

  • Wonderful. I love the muppets. They are such fun!!! ;). Kind and warm regards. The muppets!!! Hurrah!

  • Any body that says he is a bass baritone needs a swift slap in the face. Ramey can hits some damn low notes.

  • that's really funny

  • omgggg this makes me so happy : D

  • Just have to listen to this whenever I`m feeling "low, low, low" lol

  • Well Done.....I think I love "L" as well (wink)....Esp after such a wonderful performance. hehehehehe

  • sorry not the low low low part the part that he goes low on.

  • what was the lowest note on the LOW LOW LOW part?

  • i love the old school classic sesame street!! :D i hope they will replay the old school classic sesame street episodes!! i'm a FAN!! :D

  • Samuel Ramey is just so amazing.

  • Samuel Ramey has such a beautiful timbre: i love him!

  • He sings well and wears costumes well. He's the kind of singer that you actually want to see in those pants.

  • great musicality and educational as well, who knew that "low" began with "L"? Very imformative!

  • I loved this clip sooo much over the years and couldn't figure out how to find it on here until NOOOOOOW what a glorious moment!! his voice amazed me as a kid.

  • (singing along)

L is the letter that I love the moooost

L helps us go low low loww

L can also help me lalala

L I think you are sweeeeell.....

  • Erwin Schrott is the best bass!

  • cute. it could have been worse--ramey

    covering robeson's old man river........

would have preferred 't' for 'torreaadora/

dont spit on da floor-a/ use the cuspidor-a/ dats-a what its for-a' of course ramey

would be dressed as chico marx.......

  • For years, I thought the real words to that song were "Neither a lender nor a borrow'r be. . do not forget. . stay out of dept. . ." from Gilligan's Island.

Then I learned it was an opera. . . I still sang the Gilligan lyrics.

But now, I shall forever sing Low low low. . . .

Awesome! YAAAY For Samual Ramey! Yaaaay for Sesame Street! And Yaaaaaaaay for this video!

  • I do hope the producers of Sesame Street have preserved all those videotapes. What a historical document of who's who in this time period.

Of course, the kiddies don't realize the quality of the guest stars. I remember one time viewing a Sesame Street broadcast that featured Big Bird, guest star poet Maya Angelou and a bunch of kiddies playing ring around the rosy. I wondered if the kids had any concept who they were rosying with?

  • Greats like Red Foxx, James Earle Jones, Mark Hammil.

  • We need to beam this video continuously into outer space. If aliens knew we had Sesame Street *and* Samuel Ramey they would recognize us as gods.

  • Worship us as gods.

  • I wish there were a Muppet Show with this man as guest star ... imagine Miss Piggy all over him. :-O

  • you gotta love those LOW LOW LOW notes.

  • great fun. thank gawd for Sesame Street - the best thing on NET. Perlman, YoYo--who didn't help out?

  • I'll admit it... I sang along.

  • lmao.. the L as the bull was so cute

  • He was so handsome...and the hair was just right back then...and the voice was beauuuuuuuutiful!!!!

  • what is the name of the piece of music he is singing to .....i love it magnificant

  • Toreador's Song, from "Carmen".

  • Votre Toast?

  • It's from Bizet:Carmen The toreador aria.

You Tube is actually a good place to enjoy some good rendition.

Try Gino Becchi's version for a full blooded, classic interpretation in both sound and spectacle.

  • oh dear, those pants! He's so young! I love it!

  • Thumbs up G!

  • This is so awesome!!!

  • its just great....!!!!!

  • i thought that the "L" pretending to be the bull was probably the funniest thing i have seen in a long time

  • How horrible that even on sesame street the man is sexy.

  • no not sexy at all sorry

  • you know the phrase greatest thing on the planet gets thrown around a little too much these days... but im pretty sure that this truly is the greatest thing ever. DONE

  • Samuel rules!

Great idea to bring opera fror the kids!

  • That is one of his best performances sadly its on sesame street, But I am glad of SS and Looney Toons for introducing children to classical music. Hell my dad only knew classical music cause it was on looney toons as a kid.

  • Wow. Talk about bringing opera to "the masses"! This is so funny. I loved it. This is such a great idea.

  • lol never would have expected this combination. nice :D

  • Crying, laughing, masturbating furiously. GOD I LOVE THIS MAN

  • My voice professor has performed with this guy... He's the best!

  • I love Samuel Ramey. This was fantastic. I love playing it for my grandchildren.

  • Brilliant!!

  • Samuel has an amazing singer. He did ABC's on here very well too!!!

  • WOW! I wish i had his low range

  • I KNOW! As much as I wish it could, L really can't help me go low, low, low.

  • 맙소사;;;

  • Just great. Thanks for posting it.

  • great!

  • I love it!

  • Wow, this is awesome, wish I had actually seen it when it aired.

  • lolololololololol

    LoL

    :D

  • ... and LOL begins with L

  • Great! Thanks lilly425 (previous comment) for pointing this one out to me. Love it!

  • Ah, thank you so much posting this! I knew it existed, but this is the first time I've seen it. I am a huge Samuel Ramey fan! It's great! :)

  • excelente version de toreador. felicidades´por este video y gracias al que lo subio.

  • Bravo Maestro, Bravo!

It's right up there with my other favorite Muppet "arias" of all time: Beverly Sills and Placido Domingo both singing with Miss Piggy.

    a

  • LOL

  • this is so cute! Any idea what year it aired?

  • Judging by Ramey :), it's the end of 80s-beginning of 90s.

  • Thanks for saving me trouble!

  • AHH!!! Awesome! That was Sesame back in the good days.

  • Heck yeah--judging by the number of parodies the CTW songwriters based on _Carmen_, I suspect it was one of the producers' favorite opera. Not that there's anything wrong with basing one classic on another, mind you! :-)

  • I say! Good Show!!

  • Bravo! Bravo! Bravissimo!!

  • Cute parody, but I could've done without the lyrics on the video.

  • Agreed on both points; half the fun of seeing these old song clips (for me at least) is trying to remember the words by heart.

  • I've never seen this before. Thank you. I love it. :)
