Flea sent me here from the Koln concert in Germany...Thumbs up if you know what I'm talking about!!! if you don't check out the vid....Red hot chili peppers interlude koln
I'm just another old fart who remember the 70's....and I have to say that this kind of music, which was pretty typical of the day, is faaaar more interesting than most anything that can be gathered together on all the popular "who's the next megastar" shows nowadays. The expectation that people can play instruments this way is long gone.
@ruleta74835 I was only born in the '80s, but I gotta agree there. Talent is severely lacking nowadays. I love the older music (not calling you old, just saying I like older music :) ).
@101704MD - I don't want to claim that there is no talent left, but surely it was more prevalent for musicians to have good chops and be very creative musically back then. I think it's safe to say that it is much less so now, generally speaking. And don't sweat the "old" comments; I still feel young...after all, I was just a kid in the 70's...graduated HS in the 80s. ;^)
Hmmm, lets see... just played the 2600 to death, and, well, thats it for me on the sax, hmmm... what should I do next? Saaayyyy, check out those TIMBALES!
I thought I,d seen it all with Led Zep and Grand Funk in terms of LOUD shows. Also was Emerson Lake and Palmer... very clear, loud band.
Edgar Winter came down like a F'...N hurricane. Our scalps were peeled back to our ear line by the end of the first song. I'll spare any further description as by the time we reached ENCORE...
I can't believe that I'm old enough to remember this. And it still never loses it's appeal with me. There have been maybe 3 or 4 dozen acts of this caliber, but they are scattered over the full spectrum of genres.
Forget the BBC narrator at the end. Rick Derringer on lead, Ronnie Montrose on rythm guitar, Edgar Winter on keyboard, and that unbelievablle drumkit? Jesus, find another video with their talent together. There isn't one. Thanks.
Rush was just getting started...Kraftwerk hadn't even had their first hit...the Police weren't even a band yet...this was soooo cutting edge at the time
The host is Bob Harris, a real BBC legend. Hes still on BBC R2. Love the arp theatrics and this HAS to be the best ever prerformance on the OGWT from 74?
Cool ass Wakeman-esque synth playing? check. Bad ass Cannonball Adderly-esque sax solo? check. Polyrhythmic drumming that would make King Crimson proud? check. And... he wrote the song, sings (not on here) like a soul god with a three octave range... I mean, holy shit. I don't know what weird juice Johnny and Edgar's parents were drinking when they were conceived, but I want some. Throw a little talent my way, Edgar. Damn.
@epicranger2 Whispering Bob is awesome how dare you call him that, disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself and all the idiots who liked it too.
When I listen to this, I black out and come too in the weirdest places. So I set up a video camera to see what happens, and for the entire song I am walking around with my arms stretched in front of me and a blank look on my face.
Actually his 1st generation synth is ANALOG, not computer generated.
Every techno geek and electronic musician should get down on their knees and pray/worship to what was done with ANALOG synths back in the day: Edgar Winter, Stevie Wonder, Early Kraftwerk analog synth (later stuff wasnt analog) and NUMMEROUS OTHER pioneers, in the days before you were even born or saw your first casio keyboard. So in perspective, yes, techno is shitty in comparison to this
@ Drumguy1988 I cannot believe todays music and how anyone could enjoy it. The only good music still being produced today is alternative rock because its upbeat and uses a good balance of instruments that need talent to play. I recognize that because i play sax and guitar. I mean honestly. Ke$ha's Tik Tok is a song about getting drunk and being arrested yet the single is most grossing female song in history. Unbelievable. These songs (ex. Freebird, and this song- frankenstein) dont even need W
I think there's also some good song from other genres, at least metal. If you're into heavy stuff, I'd say Mastodon, Opeth and Arch-Enemy are very good bands.
But if we're talking about pop, I agree, most is rubbish. And the lyrics are 90% about going out, getting laid/drunk/high... depressing.
