  • CBS look bad canceled it should had run it before the Price is right in daytime slot at 10:30am and Price is right at 11am like did in east coast in 1972 when Price started!

  • I love how politically incorrect this game show is. Smoking on the set. Everyone kissing each other....people knew how to have fun in the 70's, they were more free than we are today.

  • This was the greatest game show of all time. I use to watch this program religiously as a 10 year old back in 1974. I loved the new years segments. Why did they stop naming Match game after every year after 1979? Thank you for posting this...who ever you are.

  • I thought the show went off the air in '82? It says in the description that this was the last sign change, '78 to '79, before the show got canned?

  • @rickhatch1 The original "Match Game '7x" was cancelled in 1979. This particular version was specifically a CBS version. Shortly thereafter, the show was picked up in syndication, but without the year attached. This was the 1979-1982 run. It was after this that Match Game and all of its descendants were officially put to rest.

  • I'd kill to have that sign hanging in my room.

  • And after was done Gene Rayburn died in 1999 the Match Game Man he was no one else could do it as he could

  • what was Missin seein Johnny Olson at end seen too.....

  • LOL...ah that Gene. Grabs himself a bit of New Year's cheer from Betty White at 1:49. Smooth, Gene....very smooth.

  • @wkndsquire he gets some good rear grab in!

  • 1978-79 is when Match Game jumped the shark. It happened when they introduced the star wheel.

  • The whackiest and greatest game show ever!!!!!

  • Where was Richard Dawson at this time? He was great on this show!

  • @weatherboi He left shortly after the new set change because of a dispute. Only Brett & Charles were the two regulars for the final 3 1/2 years. "Semi"s sat in the first level middle seat, such as McLean Stevenson (of M*A*S*H and "Hello Larry"). Singer/Songwriter Jack Jones (who sang "The Love Boat" theme in the opening credits of the 1977-86 ABC/Aaron Spelling dramedy series) sat in that place.

  • 1:23 MURMURMURMURMURMUR Murmur?

  • Installing that sign was by far the most butch thing I ever saw CNR do.

  • Would anyone know who recorded the "Auld Lang Syne" music?

  • @quizmaster85 Guy Lombardo.

  • @PsYcHoFaB Thanks :)

  • I hope someone kept the old signs.

  • The CBS version of the show with Gene Rayburn was the best.

After that it was just another mediocre game show.

  • who brite idea the man in charge of CBS then......kinda sad they should never change its time slot left before the Price is right came on other wise show may had gone to Match Game 80..81...82...83...84....and final in 1985....been so darn prefect

  • Whoever's bright idea it was to cancel the show is a dumbblank. >:(

  • They always got along so well, not to mention how spontaneous the show was. This is what made it so special;-)

    Thanks for posting!

  • I LOOOOVE the green dress that Brett is wearing, very 70s.

  • Who was the band that played this kind of Auld Lang Syne?

  • Guy Lombardo is the orchestra

  • It's too bad there wasn't a Match Game 2000.

  • You're right. What Match Game 2000 would've been. I wonder how that would go.

  • If this is edited, I'd like to know what went on before it was edited!!!

  • They were having fun, I was the one that edited it, this was done because of GSN's policy to show a GSN Promo. You didn't really miss anything.

  • Oh I meant at the end, when Johnny O. or whoever says "This was edited for broadcast" or something to that affect.

  • The deliberations of the celebrities thinking of an answer had some edits in it. Sometimes they had nothing interesting worth to be part of the final edited program, This was a common occurrence after 1978 when game shows where edited out, watch the Syn premiere listen carefully to the music as you'll notice the edits.

  • auld lang syne played at the end.

  • what was the song att the end.

  • i love match game its one of my favorite shows and im so glad that its oon reruns today because there arent any shows that are as good, as funny, or have the great people on them like match game did <3

  • I loved this show!! When I was a kid I saw Gene in Cape Cod and he grabbed a handful of peanuts at a store and ate him and kept on walking. I noticed he pats Betty White on the bum at 1:50. I love 'em all!!

  • gee I had no idea that Charles was an electrician :)

  • yeah richard was on briefly during the new set but the rumor was he left cause of the star wheel, that he wouldn't get called on all the time ... like he looked thrilled 2 begin with

  • While I know Match Game PM was on the air until 1982, it's somehow fitting there was never a "Match Game 80"

  • Actually, "Match Game PM" was on until 1981 - the daytime syndicated version of "MG" lasted until 1982.

  • As I said, I know that. It's just that Match Game is so much a symbol of the 1970s that it seems somewhat apt that there was never a sign that had "Match Game 80"

  • there will never be a talented group of panelists like brett and charles again...they are SORELY MISSED

  • The new year's episodes were always my favorite, me being a time-travel buff and all. Funny, I remember the logo (Match Game 78) looking different for some reason. Anyway, it's good to see this again as we get ready to welcome 2008.

  • It did. This was the FIRST year of the new logo, it changed during the summer as I recall.

Which meant all they had to do was change the number. This also meant all they needed was a "PM" to put there for the nighttime version. Previously they had to create a whole new sign for each show.

  • Man, I miss these days.

  • It was all over once CBS changed the schedule and Richard left. I still love those old Match Game shows!

  • Yet it managed another 3 seasons....four without Dawson.

  • I was wondering how they'd change the number years on that show's sign. I thought they'd replace the whole thing every season. Rare footage of them replacing '78 with '79 as December becomes January.

  • Now that I think about it, this kind of thing was the beginning of the end for this show. Once Richard left, the show had lost its zip. Once the show went into syndication, they seemed to be going through questions so fast that they looked like they just wanted to get it all over with.

  • I think that the show lost its energy when Richard Dawson left Match Game to start hosting Family Feud. It changed a lot when they did their extreme makeover from an orange brown set to blue in 1978.

  • surreal! i'm a little worried that it might fall

  • They had to know it was the last one.

  • At 1:17 to 1:20 they broke the champian bottles. I believe they did they to welcome 1979.

  • thanks!!!!!

  • Ah Auld Lang Syne, A happy and sad song.

  • Can you upload 75 to 76?

  • I just need to find the videotape
